I think we've been talking about Shooting Guns in the stoner rock thread too so might be worth a crosspost.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 7 June 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link
Both threads happily bleed over a lot, I think!

i will totally give you a fuck yeah for new mmb. "circular ruins" is fucking amazing. also, purson's debut, the circle and the blue door, holy shit! like mellow candle jamming with steeleye span, in the most righteous possible way

Don't even know if this belongs here or in Rolling Noise, but Rabih Beaini did this pretty weird, lo-fi droney "folk"/"psych"/"jazz" album:
https://soundcloud.com/rabih/sets/rabih-beaini-albidaya-preview
Normally he does techno as Morphosis or R.aH, so this was kind of out of nowhere.

super psyched for Ensemble Pearl -- Atsuo, William Herzog, Michio Kurihara and Stephen O'Malley, out in March.

Ensemble Pearl is excellent. I have not become as obsessed with a psych/drone type album since Psychic Paramount II.

Really? I'll have to listen again. I was super excited for this because I like all of those guys, but I just found myself wanting to listen to Miles every time I played it (ditto that latest Fontanelle album). It left zero impression on me the two times I listened, but I'm planning a third attempt.
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Sunday, 9 June 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link
I would recommend full volume or headphones to take in it's awesome intricacies. I am not familiar with the artists involved apart from eyvind kang who is on Wray, so I guess it is something a bit different and new for me.

Just watched Oneida playing with Rhys Chatham at ATP - fucking astounding. And chatting to them afterwards I was made up to hear that they've recorded together and this will be coming out next year.
And I'd implore anyone to spend more time with (Ensemble Pearl). It took ages to click with me but now it's a top three of the year style deal. Your man from Ghost is such a pleasure to listen to on guitar. That his solo drone track is just done on guitar and tape delay is amazing I reckon.

Shooting Guns from Saskatoon? Interesting. I missed seeing them during the Junos. I was a little on the fence about some of their earlier material but it certainly had potential. I'll give this a try.

The Ensemble Pearl album is four dark dirges and two very delicate pieces. I can't explain what is special about it, but it is.
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 22 June 2013 19:59 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, you guys are right. This Shooting Guns is enjoyable boozy sludge.

There's a good interview/live set from WFMU/The Free Music Archive linked in that post-Takoma thread as well. Really interesting.

The line-up:
12:00 – 12:30 - Jenks Miller Band (only show of fest) 12:50-1:20 – Tom Carter (only solo show of fest) 1:40 – 2:10 - Magik Markers (improv set) 2:30 – 3:10 – Glenn Jones (only show of fest) 3:30 – 4:10 – Desert Heat ( Steve Gunn / Cian Nugent / John Truscinski /Jason Meagher – North American debut – only show of fest) 4:30 – 5:15 – Thurston Moore / John Moloney Caught on Tape Duo (only show of fest) - live between-set music from Mike Gangloff and Nathaniel Bowles (both of Pelt, Black Twig Pickers and solo fame)
Tom carter just freaking killed it, for lack of a better term, and Gangloff and Bowles are droning it up before the Magik Markers do a full improv set (up next). Great sound quality on the stream too.

Saw Residual Echoes in Charlottesville recently, and man it really cooked. Hadn't been 100% sold on recorded stuff I've heard, songs didn't fully connect with me, but this set was full on great, the songs were cool and the instrumental parts/jams were pretty focussed and definitely rocking. Some real highs. Here's the same line-up in Europe, where they are on tour right now:

Hah hah. La Lechera, that Residual Echoes clip has some psych rock flute in it, which I think you are fond of, right?

Went to see Carlton Melton last night, not 100% into them cos I don't always feel the *songs* they play, sometimes the compositions are a bit boring, but the *way* that they play them is often pretty staggering, they sound HUGE. The drummer really smashes his kit, I don't think I've seen a drummer play quite so hard before.
Main reason I went was to catch White Manna who put out an excellent debut last year and are just about to release the follow-up. Great band, songs are kind of reminiscent of the Elevators but played with incendiary Stooges-style guitar riffing and Hawkwind-ish space effects instead of the jug. Really good!

White Manna was rad but for some weird reason the Aqua Nebula Oscillator album from last year stole a lot of its thunder, for me. Both are great albums tho.
― soz, duheem! (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 29 September 2013 04:37 (ten years ago) link
Guess I better check them out then!
Saw Mainliner last night who were volcanic in their intensity. Heavy jams and white hot noise freakouts where the music was sent hurtling backwards through space. Awesome singer/bass player, think they're from Bo Ningen who I haven't really got round to listening to yet for some reason. BTW I still wish someone would make me a Pete Frame-style 3' x 4' Japanese psych family tree.
