I mean, seriously, why

You only need to associate your UDID with a developer account if you want to do a clean install. If you choose 'Update' you are good to go.

"many of the new icons were (...) designed by (...) Apple’s marketing and communications department, not the app design teams."

That might explain it. But it doesn't make it right.

where would I get the ipsw, and isn't there a risk of apple revoking the cert on an unregistered install?

^This is registering with Apple.

yes, but calstars is saying you *don't* have to register yr UDID with a developer account if you choose update instead of restore

ok, I sorted it out. running ios 7 on a verizon iphone 5. took about 20 minutes.

first impression: thanks for the windows phone!

FB app is super fast now tho...

truth bomb lawyer mean mean pride (Edward III), Friday, 14 June 2013 04:49 (ten years ago) link

there are still a few small annoyances and a lot of bugs but for the most part it seems like a big improvement

max, Friday, 14 June 2013 10:29 (ten years ago) link

e.g. i STILL don't understand why i have to add an alarm to an event for it to show up in my notifications screen. all reminders should show up there, even, maybe especially ones that dont have alarms associated!!!

max, Friday, 14 June 2013 10:30 (ten years ago) link

can't you give all events an alarm by default? (srs q)

caek, Friday, 14 June 2013 11:05 (ten years ago) link

yes, but not reminders

max, Friday, 14 June 2013 11:08 (ten years ago) link

this is not a huge thing just a really weird gap to me. why cant i just pull down my notifications screen, especially now that they have a "today" vertical, and see every single one of my reminders, even the ones that dont have a specific date/time attached

max, Friday, 14 June 2013 11:09 (ten years ago) link

Slight digression. I got an iPhone 5 this week. It's completely incapable of retaining a signal for more than a minute or so at a time. Causing me no end of grief and possibly the worst phone I've ever owned.

AFAIK iphones have a liberal return policy

A couple months ago I started noticing the dreaded "ghosting" image retention fault on my rMBP. It's an ongoing problem with all the retinas using LG-sourced screens - the Apple Support thread for this problem is over 500 pages. I'd been trying to ignore the fault, but it just got too ridiculous, so I took it to the local Apple Store. Had it back the next day, no charge. New Samsung-sourced screen is slightly warmer, but I code/write mostly in white-on-black these days.

There's an online test to see if you have the problem.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 15 June 2013 05:06 (ten years ago) link

anyway to get iOS7 on iphone w/out a dev a/c?

Ha! They're sending me a new one.

michaellambert, Saturday, 15 June 2013 10:23 (ten years ago) link

yup xp

I would only do this on a spare iphone 5 btw. doing this on an older model, especially if it's yr only phone, is kinda risky if something goes wrong. if you brick it and bring it to the apple store they may not be too understanding.

update your iphone and itunes to the latest versions.

download the dmg for the current version of iOS 6 for your phone (you'll need this to revert your phone back once apple revokes the cert for iOS 7 beta)

download the iOS 7 dmg file for your iphone model.

(you're gonna have to dl these from file sharing sites, not apple)

unzip the iOS 7 dmg to get the ipsw file

connect your iphone to itunes, do a full backup. if you're savvy enough, make a copy of the backup file, since itunes only stores the latest backup.

option or shift click on "update" in itunes (NOT "restore"), select the iOS 7 ipsw. it'll ask if you want upgrade and say something about registering with apple, just say OK, it doesn't mean anything.

iOS 7 will install, should keep all your existing apps, settings, and data (it did for me).

you're going to have to keep your ear to the ground about apple revoking certs, if they revoke the beta 1 cert and close the loophole for non-developers on beta 2, you'll need to revert to the iOS 6 ipsw using the same method. if enough time has gone by and the iOS 6 ipsw cert has been revoked, you could get stuck w/ an inoperable phone unless you jailbreak.

Re: Ghosting, I had an LG which did this, but after a few months I noticed a load of dead/stuck pixels on my screen, so got it repaired, and to give thme credit it was replaced the next day wih the Samsung, but after a while that one got the same dead/stuck pixel problem, on my 3rd one now which also has slowly got the same issue. I only know two other people with the same model and they both have the same problem. I think AppleCare is going to be a very wise upgrade to get. The resolution is gorgeous though.

The power button on my iPhone 5 got super-intermittent. After watching this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdpIDqCCROI

I took my phone to a "Genius," and they gave me a fresh unit for free, pretty much no-questions-asked. So yeah, when you have 80 billion in the bank, you can afford a liberal return policy.

schwantz, Monday, 17 June 2013 17:37 (ten years ago) link

My current laptop is rapidly approaching toast, so I'm starting to look at Macbook Pro refurbs. Looking at two in particular:

13-inch with a 3.0 GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7
or
15-inch with a 2.6 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7

Both are identical in just about every other way (graphics on 15-inch also list NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory). Is it worth the extra $150 to bump up? In other words, is quad-core that much more impressive, performance wise?

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 18:21 (ten years ago) link

Bearing in mind I don't really do much in the way of video rendering or anything like that.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 18:36 (ten years ago) link

think less in terms of the specs and more in terms of the form factor

乒乓, Monday, 17 June 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link

if youre not doing any video rendering you should look at macbook airs

max, Monday, 17 June 2013 18:51 (ten years ago) link

might be worth the extra $150 if you plan on doing any gaming - otherwise i would stick with the 13' for better portability

but yeah, airs might be a better bet too

Nhex, Monday, 17 June 2013 18:54 (ten years ago) link

Do Airs handle heavy Photoshopping well? I'm sort of constitutionally opposed to bumping down to one of those, but I suppose I could investigate.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 19:18 (ten years ago) link

Also, the only refurbs available for Airs right now are 11", which I may as well get a tablet, no?

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 19:19 (ten years ago) link

yeah don't get the 11"

乒乓, Monday, 17 June 2013 19:19 (ten years ago) link

i use photoshop for work on my 18 month old air and ive never experienced a slowdown in overall performance. its really not "bumping down" anymore--my gf got a pro at the same time that i got the air and i havent noticed a single benefit to her pro, even when it comes to PS and illustrator stuff, and the air is so much lighter and easier its way preferable to use and carry around

xp i wouldnt get the 11" no

max, Monday, 17 June 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

I've got a Samsung screen on my 15" MBP Retina, but the ghosting talk above made me thing I need Applecare. $330 plus tax... and today is my last day to get it so the cheaper Ebay options are out.

I guess if it ever fucks up I'll dunk it in the tub and use renters' insurance.

otm. For something that you're going to touch, move, and use every day, it should be something you enjoy touching, moving, and using.

The Verge put out their review of the feature-bumped (and $100 price-dropped) 13" MacBook Airs

http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/17/4436332/macbook-air-review-13-inch-2013

We’ve been recommending the MacBook Air for three years straight now, so this is pretty simple: if you’re a normal person shopping for a laptop, you should buy a MacBook Air.

"a normal person" ;_;

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 20:09 (ten years ago) link

i think it really comes down to whether you prefer the bigger screen of the 15" as opposed to a 13" mbp or mba and whether you'd be willing to put up with the extra 1-2 pounds of weight that entails

乒乓, Monday, 17 June 2013 20:12 (ten years ago) link

I think I'm totally cool with the 13" tbh, after looking them over in the store. At any rate, I'm convinced now that I don't need quad-core vs. dual-core, so the 13" is probably the way to go.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 20:28 (ten years ago) link

is it retina? that would be a big reason to go for the pro over the air

乒乓, Monday, 17 June 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link

Yes. I wanted retina more for the SSD though.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

I have a 15" MBP at work and it's bloody massive compared to the 11". Weighs about as much as a PowerBook 170.

Goes like stink, mind. Think the Retina one is lighter, too.

stet, Monday, 17 June 2013 21:26 (ten years ago) link

i hope by the time i'm ready to by a new laptop (knock on wood not for a long time), that macbook airs will be video-capable

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 17 June 2013 23:00 (ten years ago) link

dude... they can already display video. FYI.
