It's not like I expect 58-yr-olds to be the savviest computer users, but thinking it's rant-worthy is really extra dense.

I usually hate Olbermann's voices, but his Limbaugh is pretty funny. He's been practicing.

Rush Limbaugh completely OTM in that clip above, especially in regard to callers. You wouldn't believe how many hosts who will be on a pretty coherent train of thought that will immediately throw on the brakes and bring their show to a grinding halt because they see a phone call coming in on the control room screen.

"Hello, caller? Hello? Did they hang -- Caller? Thought they were there again for a moment. Oh, well. 800-345-TALK if you're still out there somewhere. Now where was I? Oh, yes, the effect the stimulus package will have on St. Louis' economy..."

Honestly, one you accept that he's a sack of manure stuffed in a suit, Rush is kind of fun to listen to. O'Reilly, same thing.

Bad Banana On Broadway (kenan), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago) link

There was really good piece on Rush in the NYT Sunday mag a few months ago, I think. He makes no bones whatsoever about being non-ideological, in that he's 100% in it for the money.

I sincerely doubt Olbermann is a differenter, more specialer kind of soul.

Rush is just a doofus. Most right-wingers who listen to him (who i've encountered) are aware that he's an entertainer first and foremost.

but Hannity, O'Reilly and that shitstain Beck are on what is consider "the news" by lots of people, and that's, you know, fucked up.

rush, i have to admit, is very talented at radio. it's tough to fill up 4 hours of airtime a day. the writer of that profile didn't have anything to say about limbaugh pushing information on air that is just factually incorrect, which does a disservice to his own listeners, not to mention the general discourse in this country..

here sharky shark (daria-g), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

The writer of the profile was also a right winger.

hannity/o'reilly/beck.. yeah. depressing that so much of cable news is just opinion shows presented as news, that play fast and loose with the facts & fill up airtime with guests who are still playing 'crossfire'

Uh, given what happened to that Congressbro who said something bad about Rush and then had to go begging forgiveness, I find this hard to believe.

Pancakes Hackman, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link

rush is mock-heroic and grandiose and all, and while i'm sure he has a high opinion of himself i don't think he buys into his spiel even as he expects his audience to do so. o'reilly/olberman/hannity/savage do a lot of bullshit riffing too but i hear them as being more 'into it'. rush would be most like ann coulter in that respect, in my opinion, though her persona is more spiteful than self-aggrandizing.

Hannity, Beck, Schnitt, et al are "serious" because they rarely joke! Meanwhile the Rush listeners I know consider him an entertaining soothsayer.

Oh man try and find one pundit that has an audience who doesn't believe what they're saying most of the time (except for maybe the Comedy Central parody ones, and even then...). Peeps take them really seriously & it's amazing how influential their opinions are on most of their audience.

Also I can't get listening to these dudes for the lols. I'm getting tired of even Keitho and stuff, I just can't handle the smug.

Keith is getting on my nerves, it's true. I think the last time I watched three nights in a row, he dedicated a good five minutes each night to attacking O'Reilly. They both need a time out to learn to behave, because daddy has better things to do than listen to you kids.

A thing that bothers me about Keith, and this is totally silly, is that he calls Bill O'reilly 'Billo.' This bcz the name Billo only makes me think of a cute baby hippo. I don't know why. So Keith associating Bill O'Reilly with that cute hippo, it just kills me!

“Wait until it is discovered that homosexuality is genetic, and wait until prospective parents could be told that their child might be gay at birth. You know who’s going to do the fastest 180 from pro-choice to pro-life? The entire homosexual community is going to become pro-life overnight. I’m just telling you, you start cheapening life this way, and then you cheapen it even further by claiming a baby isn’t even a person, a baby is not a human being, then, folks, you’re next.

“We’re all next, depending on how much power they get, and the basis on which they determine who gets to live and who doesn’t. And what if down the road, a bunch of liberals decide, you know, rather than have to put up with a bunch of opposition, a bunch of conservatives, let’s just wipe them out. You think that will never happen. It can happen.”

"He's there to get the United States out of meaningless relationships. It's one of the reasons he was elected. It's one of the big points that reverberated with the American people. And to do this, Trump had to take on the entire United States foreign policy national security apparatus who were much in favor of the status quo. Trump wanted to upend it. So there were two things. Trump's not wanting to just, without any concerns or assurances, they don't want to fund a regime that's not going to reform itself. He doesn't want to perpetuate corruption and all kinds of dangerous stuff being done with U.S. money. It makes perfect sense that he would ask for some sign that they were serious about reform before providing U.S. aid -- which was ultimately provided, by the way.

So, the context of this is that Trump knows he's dealing with a regime, a nation, that has just been led by a very corrupt bunch that's been voted out. That corrupt bunch was working to undermine his election, working with the DOJ, the Obama DOJ, the FBI, and all that. Of course he's not going to trust these people. He's going to have to see some indication that they are serious about reforming before they get U.S. aid. He's not just going to provide it willy-nilly. And so asking for some kind of show that the Ukrainian new President Zelensky is serious is part of the deal. He's just not going to write him a blank check. There was no quid pro quo...."

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 20 November 2019 20:33 (four years ago) link

even if you somehow swallow all of that, you have to believe that trump was willing to take the risk of tasking a backchannel group (led by the smartest man he knew, rudy giuliani) to take on the near and dear subject of corruption in Ukraine, and that it just happened to be Ukraine, and the subject of his earnest effort to reduce corruption in Ukraine juuuuust happened to be a Biden.

“We’re shutting down our country because of the — the cold virus, which is what coronaviruses are. This is COVID-19, the 19th version of the coronavirus. We’re shutting it — can you imagine our enemies watching this? You think the Chinese are not laughing themselves silly over how easy this has been? And it continues. This has been easy.

“Can you imagine — Vladimir Putin’s sitting over there, ‘Look, I tried to ruin Donald Trump with this stupid story about he and I colluding to steal the election from Hillary. And I worked with the FBI and I was working with the CIA and I was planting all kinds of stuff, and that went nowhere. And the Chi-Coms run this scam on some sort of virus, and the Americans do this?!'”

COVID-19 is actually named for 2019, the year it emerged, not because it’s the “19th version” of anything.
