i checked out ios 7 on an ipod touch yesterday. it probably is the right direction for things to head in, and the icons didn't strike me as being as shitty as they did when i saw them on screen.

markers, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 16:55 (ten years ago) link

like, actually not that bad really

markers, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 16:55 (ten years ago) link

i also felt like regular users probably won't be too too confused when they update

Has anyone else just got an invite to play with iwork for icloud beta? Seems to work pretty much as advertised..

sktsh, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 20:53 (ten years ago) link

I have one (but I'm also in the developer program). Haven't gone into it yet...

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 4 July 2013 00:18 (ten years ago) link

I just got an iPhone 5. Apparently I had been backing up to "the cloud", and so now I'm restoring everything from it, to my new phone. It's taking FOREVER. I wish I'd just set it to deal with iTunes. Kind of wondering what use the cloud is. (I don't use iTunes Match)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 4 July 2013 12:56 (ten years ago) link

it's 2013

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link

there's got to be a thread for this, but does anybody want to convince me to either:
1) buy an iphone 4s
2) buy an iphone 5
3) buy a different smartphone

my g2 is fucked and it's time to upgrade.

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link

If, like me, you’re not keen on everything fucking thing you own to be Apple, I quite like my HTC 8X, but I’m not really an app freak, which is where IOS is really strong.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:45 (ten years ago) link

don't get a 4s. go with the 5 or maybe wait for the 5s or whatever it'll be called that'll inevitably be out sometime this fall

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:47 (ten years ago) link

well i already have an ipad.. thinking about the galaxy s4? but roughly the same price as a 4s

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:49 (ten years ago) link

what's the down side with a 4s?

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

it came out in fall 2011

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

you'd presumably use it for, what, two years?

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

so in 2015 you'd be using a phone that came out in 2011. i forsee the possibility of software problems.

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:51 (ten years ago) link

like, at some point new os's might run slowly on it. maybe at some point you wouldn't even be able to put on the new os, which means you'd be locked out of some apps that are exclusive to that new version.

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link

idk mh or caek or silby or someone should weigh in here

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link

i'm just telling you that i follow this shit too much and would not recommend anyone buy a 4s right now unless you really wanted an iphone and really didn't want to pay the extra $99

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:53 (ten years ago) link

does the 4s even get all of the features of ios 7?

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:53 (ten years ago) link

i don't follow this shit at all, i just want a working phone.

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 16:56 (ten years ago) link

I have a 4s and the battery is basically fucked on it after one year. I think the 5s are better in that regard.

totally. let's get some other ppl to weigh in here.

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:08 (ten years ago) link

at this point, i kind of want someone to talk me out of/into the galaxy s4

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:11 (ten years ago) link

i don't know much about it. it had a bigger screen and it's android.

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link

or an htc one?

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:13 (ten years ago) link

well i love my s3, s4 looks at least equally or more dope. what concerns do you have.

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:14 (ten years ago) link

4S has all the ios7 features except airdrop I believe.

My work involves a lot of smartphone usage/testing... its basically down to preference at the top tier. iphones are more stable in my experience, but the trade off is being locked into the apple ecosystem. That's a dealbreaker for some. Androids tend to come loaded with carrier bloatware, but are much more customizable, which inevitably leads to some slow down and crashing for most users. Also their battery life sucks.

sofatruck, Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:16 (ten years ago) link

does the s4 fit comfortably in a back pocket? how's the app store for android? Mostly the same as ios?

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:17 (ten years ago) link

(my g2 got locked out of upgrading right around cupcake, so i missed a whole generation of apps for phones)

wow

markers, Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:20 (ten years ago) link

it was a poor buy.

i get the sense anything i get now will be a quantum leap forward.

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

the apple dealbreaker is less the walled environment and more the cost... top of the line runs a good $200 more with apple
this is hardly news but it's annoying

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:29 (ten years ago) link

unless you're itching for a big screen or want to customize the hell out of your phone, iPhone 5 is probably the way to go. more stable, has the edge on apps, more reliable battery life. if you've got other Apple products, there are perks too. markers is right about it being too late in to go 4s.

circa1916, Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:29 (ten years ago) link

i'm on a 4s. it's fine for me. i got it 18 months ago, but it was actually replaced with a brand new unit about a month ago because a button failed. so i had a brand new boxed phone i could have sold on ebay for enough to make it effectively a cheap upgrade to a 5. i didn't bother though. i mean it's just a phone. it works.

but i'm not sure i'd recommend buying one outright new *now* if you can wait, just because apple phones going to get better and/or cheaper after the summer.

what's the price difference between the 4s, 5 and whatever android thing you're looking at.

caek, Thursday, 4 July 2013 18:02 (ten years ago) link

my 4 (non-s) is still totally boss, feels ridiculous to bin it right now but what could i do, my provider was offering my a 5 for £19.99

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 4 July 2013 20:19 (ten years ago) link

Wait for the 5s imo. These things have great resale value. When you go to upgrade in two years you can sell the old one for the price of the new one, if not more. I made money on my old 4 when upgrading to 5.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 4 July 2013 20:20 (ten years ago) link

there's also talk of that budget iphone, if that's your thing

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 4 July 2013 21:44 (ten years ago) link

My iPhone 4 (non-s) is still trucking right along too. I can't use Siri (not a big deal), but iOS 7 is supported. I'm planning on getting a 5s, but might get sidetracked if Apple ships a retina iPad Mini.

Resale value is indeed great.
