Bob Mould, Hüsker Dü: Maxwell’s is sort of my CBGB. For R.E.M., the Feelies, the Replacements, Hüsker Dü, all the bands of that era—that was our room. Bear in mind, I never played CBGB. In early ’85, I called up and tried to get a gig there. They were like, “Never heard of you.” Really? You didn’t hear Zen Arcade or New Day Rising? Maybe you should go read The Village Voice or something.

In seeking a new upscale concept, Carr holds little nostalgia for the Maxwell’s that was. “The place has been completely redone,” said Carr. “It’s nice, it’s clean, it’s open, the food’s good, so it’s a whole different type of atmosphere than the old Maxwell’s, where you would have the people…come in and have a hamburger and drink and spill stuff all over the floor and go into the back room and jump up and down and get their ears blasted out. This is a lot higher quality.”

Wow, a legit venue with great booking and affiliations with major musicians couldn’t pay the rent, so it’s shocking that open mic nights couldn’t do it either.

I heard the restaurant side of it was not really cutting it either. They couldn't figure themselves out.

I think I went there once after it changed hands, and the menu seemed to be the same as before. Not that it was ever a particularly distinguished menu. Without the draw of the shows, they definitely needed something to set them apart.

The food was good enough that when we played there I looked forward to the free meal, but it wasn't a place I'd go out of my way to eat at otherwise.

I always kind of blamed the resurgence of Brooklyn for the demise of Maxwell's. It seemed like a lot of bands on tour would often book two shows in the area: one at a Manhattan venue and the other at Maxwell's. However, once Brooklyn started to become a big thing, the same caliber of bands continued to play one show at a Manhattan venue but their second show instead at a Brooklyn venue, leaving Maxwell's as the proverbial odd man out.
