I know he's skinny now, but he was fat on snl.

You don't laugh at your own jokes like that unless there's total darkness in your soul.

Also I should do my normal thing of looking down my nose at people who don't find Kenan funny, so ... Kenan is funny, what's wrong with y'all, etc. etc., zut alors

dude, i think you're really smart, but wtf on this one? the dude essentially plays the same character every sketch he's (near-invariably briefly) in, which is the lol "serious" "shaking his head at other people" or "vaguely sarcastic" guy (see: cougar sketches, etc). of course, he's also got his other recurring thing, which is "black guy". i find he brings zero, even negative, charisma week after week (which tbf could be a result of the fact that he's so sparingly used), and as a kenan & kel stan 4 life i'm often completely embarassed for him more than anything else

Franken's former partner Tom Davis has written a memoir:

THIS. THIS IS THE PROBLEM. saw a re-run of a will ferrell hosted episode and kenan actually does some character work (cosby most memorably).

need separate SNL: The Funny Years thread

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 February 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago) link

no he dint!

xp he kills on weekend update i know that. i used to think he was terrible and kevin's characterization def. rings a bell but over the last couple years he's made me laugh alot. (he's even brought weird beats to the otherwise unchanged 'vaguely sarcastic guy' that make me laugh, i dunno, it's like he's not steamrolling through the sketches anymore)

same as giving a shit (tremendoid), Friday, 20 February 2009 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link

He has definitely improved, I'll give him that much.

Dwayne Johnson just came out on SNL, amirite

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 8 March 2009 04:43 (fifteen years ago) link

It's a skit, Magruver.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 8 March 2009 05:50 (fifteen years ago) link

At only about 30 mins in, enjoyed the opening monologue bit, the Macgruber sketches, and 'The Rock Obama'.

As far as I'm concerned, this ep is a success.

Still, I wish they focused more on the writing. Any of these guys can pull off decent comic material, but as everybody from Damon Wayans on has said for the past 10+ years that the writing is key to the show.

kingfish, Sunday, 8 March 2009 07:58 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, tonight felt like the slump was ending. lots of simple but funny bits that didn't drag on forever.

Has it died?

SNL will not die until NBC becomes an all-infomercial channel. At which time it will show infomercials selling SNL-nostalgia compilation DVDs, featuring Eddie Murphy in the last throes of his decline, as host.

Aimless, Sunday, 8 March 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Dwayne Johnson acting effeminate has been a running gag through his acting career. Pretty good show last night though, especially that silly lighthouse sketch. It looked like the cast did not expect to have that much water dumped on them.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 8 March 2009 21:37 (fifteen years ago) link

"The Rock Obama" was the best thing about last night, because it's a FACT Rahm actually dreams these things.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 8 March 2009 21:39 (fifteen years ago) link

when did dwayne johnson start being billed as just dwayne johnson?

man Bill Hader is the shit these days. it was great to see him go all the way with that Malkovich impression after he just teased it very briefly in a sketch when Malkovich was actually hosting, and the Dateline guy is becoming a good recurring sketch.

Goons have finally discovered this thread! Hello goons! (some dude), Sunday, 15 March 2009 05:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, his Keith Morrison impersonation is golden.

I'm so glad we got both a Brian Fellow's Safari Planet AND an Astronaut Jones sketch tonight. On top of that, Tracy's monologue was crazy funny.

zac efron has zinged himself pretty hard so far! i might actually have liked him for it, if it wasnt for that fucking jacket he's wearing

I seriously hope they're not trying to turn that "Gilley" (sp?) sketch into a recurring thing for Kristen Wiig. AWFUL

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 12 April 2009 04:19 (fifteen years ago) link

this jon bovi thing is going on foreverrrrrrr

this show is horrible

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 April 2009 04:25 (fifteen years ago) link

This ep is shaping up to be really terrible. The bar that doesn't card sketch began well, but the writers obviously didn't know how to flesh it out and turned it into an Eliott Spitzer commercial WTF.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 12 April 2009 04:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i have that exact chair zac efron is sitting on

banned like this (k3vin k.), Sunday, 12 April 2009 04:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I wish they would give Casey more weird/oddball characters, I really liked that silly running soldier sketch.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 12 April 2009 05:23 (fifteen years ago) link

the post-monologue sketches were two wiig returning characters. i think her impression of kathy lee is funny but centering the whole sketch around BO was awful and the gilly sketch is fucking horrifying on all levels. stopped watching after weekend update but then there was a high school musical gag? unngh

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 April 2009 05:38 (fifteen years ago) link

tell me what yall think of this— i think first episode next season they should hand it over to the apatow/jody hill conglomerate. no host, but every skit is rudd, rogen, cera, hill, MCBRIDE, carrell, ferrell, segel etc etc. it would be funnier than every episode of the last 3 years combined

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 April 2009 05:39 (fifteen years ago) link

bill hader can stay on for that episode

i think they need to fire this cast and writers and have a guest cast for every show - the office cast one week, 30 rock cast the next week, bring back the arrested development cast around the time the movie comes on, curb your enthusiasm ppl when the show starts up again

real talk no challops the college humor show on mtv is a funnier sketch comedy show than snl atm

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 April 2009 05:42 (fifteen years ago) link

a combined human giant/lonely island episode would be fire imo

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 April 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago) link

give an episode to 77 - ethan is a veteran sketch comedy writer, all you gotta do is replace puppets w/ humans

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 April 2009 05:46 (fifteen years ago) link

THIS IS THE WORST SNL FANFIC I'VE EVER READ IN MY LIFE NO STAMP OF APPROVAL

A B C, Sunday, 12 April 2009 05:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i like the whole cast except for casey wilson but the writers must be like i don't even know. so bad. then again a lonely island/human giant ep sounds like a waking nightmare to me

A B C, Sunday, 12 April 2009 06:00 (fifteen years ago) link

kristen wiig's kathie lee makes me lmbo way too much and i basically dont even remember what kathie lee gifford acts like

A B C, Sunday, 12 April 2009 06:00 (fifteen years ago) link

I actually like a majority of the current cast (except Bobby Moynihan and Seth Meyers), and really don't blame them for the lion's share of what's wrong with the show in its current state. It's Lorne Michaels' inability to hire worthwhile writers, because he has no idea anymore about what's actually funny. I have to imagine he's almost completely hands-off with regard to 30 Rock, because the level of funny on that show just seems way over his head.

I caught myself thinking during one of the commercial breaks tonight "I wonder when the final episode will be. Five years from now? Ten years from now? Will Lorne ever leave (again) and turn it over to someone else (again)?"

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 12 April 2009 06:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Gillie (sp? eh..) sketch was really bleak

bear, bear, bear, Sunday, 12 April 2009 06:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I've warmed to some of Wiig's characters that I initially hated, but I can't ever see that happening with Gillie/Gilly/whatever.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 12 April 2009 06:40 (fifteen years ago) link

That Jon Bovi sketch is like something an eighth grader comes up with on the back on the school bus.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 April 2009 16:25 (fifteen years ago) link

don't know why, but i like gillie.

mizzell, Monday, 13 April 2009 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I picture a late-night writers' meeting where in one room you've got Sudekis cracking himself up with lines like "I'm an Indian on a silk-pony I don't ride" while in the next room, a circle of interns piss their pants as Kristen Wiig wears an afro wig and goes "What? What?"
