is it just me or is there 10x the buzzfeed links on my fb wall compared to a couple weeks ago? did buzzfeed and fb make some backroom deal that makes the buzzfeed links all go straight to the top? does fb just know much i hate buzzfeed and they're like negging me with it or smth? is it because i'm typing "buzzfeed" so much in this post, has ilxor made a backroom deal with facebook and now all my posts are being sold? how the fuck is buzzfeed more popular than it was before, has it still not peaked? am i actually feeling bad for cracked.com right now? remember cracked.com?

is buzzfeed actually even a brand? is there a single person in the universe who has ever said "I like Buzzfeed" or "I have any positive feelings at all about the website Buzzfeed and not just this list I found"? does buzzfeed want us to know it exists? does it even have a main page? i have clicked on a million buzzfeed articles and i'm 100% certain i've never been to a main page. how the fuck is it organized? where do buzzfeed lists come from? like i know they come from 1. UNPAID HUMAN BEINGS and 2. PAYING CORPORATIONS but how do they get from "just being compiled and existing somewhere" to "all the fuck over all of social networking everywhere" if there literally isn't a single person in the world who has ever made the active choice to visit buzzfeed.com? is there actually a buzzfeed.com? should i be scared?

upworthy aaaaagh. at least buzzfeed allows you the privilege of knowing what you're going to see when you click the link. upworthy just entices people with weirdly enticing pseudo-gibberish and suddenly a YT of amanda palmer is in my browser

Upworthy, Uproxx, Buzzfeed, theyre all terrible. Useless site-scraping ad-revenue-gathering BS portals that do nothing for no one. Haaaate.

I actually enjoyed reading an article about strippers in North Dakota oil towns last week that happened to be on buzzfeed but at no point did I ever think that it was actually related to buzzfeed in any way.

joygoat, Thursday, 1 August 2013 13:02 (ten years ago) link

They're weird like that. Completely heinous 99% of the time, and then they pull something out of their ass like last March's story looking back at the Jonesboro shootings.

recently the buzzfeed guy used some cafe analogy to describe how people consume news ('they will read some news, check facebook, talk to the waiter, play with a puppy etc')

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 1 August 2013 21:16 (ten years ago) link

http://www.fastcompany.com/most-innovative-companies/2013/buzzfeed

FC: You have two different kinds of content--reported stuff and the stuff about cats. Are they attracting two different audiences?

JP: It's the same audience. Have you heard me talk about the Paris cafe? You go to a cafe and you bring a copy of Sartre and Le Monde. There's a cute dog under the table next to you. So after you read the news and the philosophy, you may pet the dog, flirt with someone at another table, and talk about some trivial gossip. All these things are part of being human. You don't become stupid when you turn away from the philosophy and pet the dog. People are complex and multifaceted. When you talk to people who say it dumbs down the audience to have cute animals, the truth is nobody has a choice: because Facebook and Twitter are perfect Paris cafes.

I like the implication that Buzzfeed's readers spend the rest of their time digging into Sartre and the daily newspaper and are merely engaging in the fundamentally and equally human diversion of seeing twenty Disney characters and vegetables that kinda look like them. Or maybe he's saying that the non-cat content on Buzzfeed is the equivalent of Sartre. I have no idea because his use of language is incoherent, blundering and unfocused, almost as if he had been "dumbed down" or something.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 2 August 2013 04:35 (ten years ago) link

Local iOS programming group meets at a Panera. A lot of techie/business networking groups use them as makeshift meeting places. Dull, but the drip coffee is OK and their slightly stale cinnamon rolls are surprisingly good.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 2 August 2013 10:21 (ten years ago) link

I work near a Panera and eat there too often, in all honesty
