no thread about the #twittersilence? most cringiest pointless nothingest thing ever imo

doesn't help that some of the people behind it have a bit of a rep for abusing the disabled/trans folks (albeit low-level)

NI otm. so many ways in which it was wrong-headed
not sure i consider that apology quite covers everything, though...baby steps, whatever

About the twitter 'suggest ban' button, I see some major implications. Now, twitter - at least to Dutch law, but I suspect to most countries - is labelled as a hoster, like an ISP. When it implements a form of moderation, it ceases to just be a communication medium, and starts being moderated platform. Now, twitter isn't responsible for death threats etc, but with the move to a moderation platform - at least to Dutch law - it will become responsible for all content.
That is a massive change. Only recently Twitter went to court in the US to prevent having to hand over information about Anonymous-members. Stating privacy, they won. But when they themselves become responsible for twitter's contents, that will not hold up in court any more, will it? Because they are responsible for what people tweet.

one very telling part of all this was caitlin moran saying that martina navratilova signing up was 'the most exciting thing to ever happen to me'
and that apology is a broken mess. how come it's ok for caitlin to say 'rancid things' at 2am in the morning, or 'a long time ago' but it's not for anyone else? clearly something needs to be done about the more extreme nasty shit going on on there but this '#twittersilence' is just a self-serving embarrassment
― NI, Monday, 5 August 2013 16:17 (ten years ago) link
I can see why they did it, but it's a disingenuous move for Twitter to try for common carrier status. Twitter's not at all like email or phone, which are private mediums, and it's not like ISPs, which are essentially just men-in-the-middle conveying transmissions.
Twitter's making massive efforts to analyse/monetize the content tweets, it can do a better job on preventing abuse via them, too.

i know it's the daily hate but i do support this name and shame tactic. should prove about a gazillion times more effective than #twittersilence

how come it's ok for caitlin to say 'rancid things' at 2am in the morning, or 'a long time ago' but it's not for anyone else?
It's not OK, hence the apology. But there is definitely a distinction, in terms of intent, between tweeting an offensive joke to a friend and tweeting abuse at a stranger. The former might be crass or unpleasant but it's not targeted.

Answering the door, she said he had been ‘very careful’ about the wording, and had even taken the trouble of checking the precise meaning of ‘a good rogering’ in a dictionary.
see we all shit on the Mail here and rightly so but sometimes you just want to kick back with some comedy detached prurience and they're the only UK paper that can do it convincingly

yeah true, it's an important distinction. though i do think these, and other comments she's made, make her not such a great person to be spearheading this campaign but if something does change for the good then that makes it worthwhile i guess. out of interest, what are their specific goals? and are there any signs twitter will commit to any of them?

ghostly international (the label) follows everyone who follows them. i guess who cares if it's not account that's actually going to read any tweets.
― festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 23:13 (ten years ago) link
yeah i guess if you're using twitter just for broadcasting there's not much need to look past your @ mentions
wonder if it might be "negatively impactful" on your "brand" because it makes you look "spammy" but idk what the accepted social media wisdom is about twitter follower ratios.

when someone follows me how has like 5k followers and follows 5k people i never check on them

i think it's cool to only have a few followers, also, like maybe ~70?, all the best people, the most singular, they are just quietly, personally tweeting their life to a coterie of interested friends
