The upcoming NMH show sold out in less than ten minutes here, I think.
No one seems impressed that I saw them four times in the 90s.
But they don't seem to understand why I am not interested in seeing them now.

"Urban Outfitters turntable crowd."

Perfect, I've been looking for a way to describe that demo.

Ian, why don't you write a book on neat early folk and blues? I haven't looked much, but I'm sick of finding folk and blues books that don't just talk about the most well known names of the spectrum. I would love to read about the approach and history of all of that stuff. Is that a boring suggestion?

Olivia Tremor Control will always be great.

Hey Pete can you tell me anything about dawn records? http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Labels/dawn.htm Or can you recommend anything else like this?

JacobSanders, Thursday, 12 September 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

i dont know a ton about dawn, but i can attest to this being great! in general, i love britjazz -- you know chris mcgregor's brotherhood of breath record? thats a killer in the same vein. i guess comus's first record is on dawn too! and a lot of mungo jerry.

ah! and now i see that these are different DAWNs. i dont know anything on that dawn. charlie rouse has a small but excellent body of work as a leader, and a LOT of work with monk. this sure looks good!

rouse's strata east record is one of favorites of the label

the jazzville records are good. that record by the 4 Most is kind of a dud and i love 50's vocal group jazz.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 September 2013 18:04 (ten years ago) link

i love Seeco. the guy who started Dawn owned Seeco.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 September 2013 18:05 (ten years ago) link

Dawn records aren't the most sought after jazz records, but they are really not easy to find.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 September 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I've seen most can be found under $50. I think I'm going to start collecting them. I'm really getting into 50's jazz especially if it boarders on thick easy listening vocal exotica. I love how the Les Jazz Modes song mixes the operatic vocals in!

JacobSanders, Thursday, 12 September 2013 18:17 (ten years ago) link

So Seeco is a latin jazz label?

JacobSanders, Thursday, 12 September 2013 18:19 (ten years ago) link

scott seward, Thursday, 12 September 2013 18:21 (ten years ago) link

seeco put out tons of cool odd records. collect them all if you dare.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 September 2013 18:21 (ten years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Hey Pete have you heard Pete La Roca's Turkish Women at the Bath? Is it a "different" sort of jazz record, worth tracking down? I noticed in a listing of exotica/outsider jazz records and wondered why they included it in the sells list.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 19:31 (ten years ago) link

i love that record!

ive never had that version, but i have/have had this bizarrely repackaged version: http://www.discogs.com/Chick-Corea-Bliss/release/1267813

once i get the OG (not actually too too hard or $$$ to find?) ill definitely hold on to it for life!
