how does this compare to majesty shredding?

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 5 August 2013 03:16 (ten years ago) link

i'm so bummed that Laura has hearing problems and isn't gonna be touring with the band this year :(

some dude, Monday, 5 August 2013 03:46 (ten years ago) link

Not terribly into the two new songs on Spotify.

Never listened to this band until today- the only thing I knew about was a funny anecdote that was related to me- but this new album sounds pretty good. Wonder if it is in fact atypical and I wouldn't like anything else.

I Am the Cosimo Code (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 8 September 2013 04:40 (ten years ago) link

nothing they've done is atypical, really

iirc their publishing arm is 'all the songs sound the same (bmi)'

(shut up ned)

mookieproof, Sunday, 8 September 2013 05:32 (ten years ago) link

yeah if you dig this record you'd probably dig most of them (which was not necessarily the case with some of the later pre-hiatus records).

FIRST NEW ORLEANS SHOW SINCE HALLOWEEN 2001. jon came out dressed like stallone in cobra. there was a dude dressed like one of the twin towers with each of his arms half of a plane. strange days.

when i was a teenager in DC i saw superchunk play like every couple of months. all the time. now it's been 12 years. /peers into silent terrifying chasm of age and death

that's very cool. thanks!

No probs, that just got posted today.

I like the song "Me and You and Jackie Mittoo" . I also just like saying that

curmudgeon, Friday, 27 September 2013 20:13 (ten years ago) link

This new record is surprisingly excellent, I listened to/reviewed it for my radio station the other day.

Honestly never gave Superchunk much time, for no good reason, despite traveling in similar circles as listener and peer, I guess. But I told our little house robot to play Superchunk tonight and damned if every song so far hasn't been really good.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 September 2020 01:50 (three years ago) link

Well, it’s all the same song (lol)

Scam Likely (morrisp), Friday, 25 September 2020 02:06 (three years ago) link

but it's a good song!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 September 2020 02:15 (three years ago) link

Not fair, they got a lot more dynamic over time.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 25 September 2020 02:17 (three years ago) link

I haven't paid all that much attention post-Foolish but on those occasions when I revisit the early records I find myself enjoying them almost as much as I did as a kidlet. Though, yeah, some nostalgia may be involved; amusing that that's a major theme upthread!

I saw them once, paired with Buffalo Tom. Pretty good, IIRC!

All the Songs Sound the Same Music (BMI)

also fuck you all they are the best band ever

mookieproof, Friday, 25 September 2020 02:46 (three years ago) link

is the title of "My Gap Feels Weird" borrowed from a comment that Mac & Laura's kid made about a tooth-loss vacancy? this is something that has bothered me for ten years now but I never had anyone to ask

the burrito that defined a generation, Friday, 25 September 2020 02:51 (three years ago) link

mac & laura are married to different people and do not have a kid together

that sounds vaguely familiar tho. probably mac's child, as i think he writes all the lyrics

mookieproof, Friday, 25 September 2020 03:10 (three years ago) link

well shoot, you learn something new every day. not always the thing you were wondering about, but still

the burrito that defined a generation, Friday, 25 September 2020 03:18 (three years ago) link

I think I might actually prefer their more recent albums to the "classic" 90s stuff which I was a little bit too old/weird for at the time

Well, it’s all the same song (lol)

I heard that Laura can’t play with them live anymore, due to extreme hearing damage? That’s really awful

lol I thought I had clicked on the Big Thief thread and was like "wow whatever this aging filter is, it's really realistic."

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 17:34 (two years ago) link

Not really feeling this new album. Only about halfway through so far but the only song sticking with me is “Endless Summer”

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 25 February 2022 21:54 (two years ago) link

I also didn't feel the new one. Not as loud, not as angry. Good for Mac for not needing to be, I guess.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 25 February 2022 21:56 (two years ago) link

the albums in their best stretch--here's where the strings come in through here's to shutting up--aren't very loud or angry. i think the comeback quality dip is just boring songwriting. i'd like to blame the arcade fire somehow.

He doesn’t mention Laura in that note - did she leave the band too at some point?

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 10 February 2023 15:45 (one year ago) link

I think she retired from performing live (outside of one-offs here and there) due to hearing damage, but still plays on the records

JRN, Friday, 10 February 2023 15:48 (one year ago) link

But Wurster is still in Mountain Goats and (with Narducy) Mould? He's probably pretty busy for three bands.
