Glenngarry Glenn Ross was different from what I expected it to be. It's a good movie and all, but honestly it's the least enjoyable out of all the Mamet movies I've seen. Probably because of all the salesman and depression.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Hm. I love that movie. It's the Mamet movies with twist endings that really piss me off. Or Mamet movies with Rebecca Pidgeon. GGR has neither, mercifully.

I watched a Mamet movie last night, actually, or at leastan early screenwriting credit of his -- The Verdict with Paul Newman. Powerhouse acting from everybody (James Mason, Charlotte Rampling), nice dialogue, pretty subtle as far as Mamet goes. And then the courtroom scenes are PREPOSTEROUS. He didn't even both to check if the things that happen in the courtroom would in any way be allowed in any courtroom ever. The whole third act just goes completely to shit. Grrr.

HI! My Dad left this morning. I think Nick was about to explode having to be so friendly and talkative with my parents TWO WEEKENDS IN A ROW.

Also, it's my Birthday Eve.

Also, I need to drink alcohol.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 12:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Happy almost birthday, Sarah.

I had enough alcohol and food over the weekend to last me all winter.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 12:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, I had plenty of food. In fact, I probably got a little drunk off all the junk food, but I don't feel comfortable drinking in front of my dad, even just a little.

Nick said we're going to eat nothing but celery the rest of the week. I put a plug in for ants on a log to mix things up a bit.

Happy birthday eve, Queen Sarah Saturday!

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 13:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Hi, Jenny! Sorry we didn't get to hang out this past weekend!

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 13:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Me, too, but we have endless weekends in our future.

I'm looking at the character and fitness questionnaire for the bar... Can any of YOU list every address, permanent and temporary, where you have lived for the past ten years or since age 18, whichever is longer? Because I sure as shit can't.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:07 (seventeen years ago) link

2x

I could name all the streets I've lived on, but I'd be guessing at a couple of the address numbers.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I might be able to. That could be fun, in fact. Well...not fun exactly, but interesting maybe.

What if you forget one? What do your addresses have to do with anything? I know that shady people take the bar; do they just slip through? Lie?

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Nope. I bet John could, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I did much of teh work this weekend. Managed to sneak in some movie watching, too, but that's about it.

I heart Fellini.

Oh, and The Hustler. That was on at Julia's place the other night. God bless TCM. I hadn't seen it in years, and had totally forgotten how great it is. Some real heavy existential life-examining stuff going on there. And Piper Laurie is soooo beautiful in it. With the blonde-ness and the husky voice and the drinking and the falling down. Ok, maybe not those last two.

Haven't we done a thread of house numbers before?

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know what the addresses have to do with anything. They can check you out and see if you're lying, and that's all I can imagine it's good for. I also have to list all my jobs for the last ten years (I think - it might be since I'm 18, too, which is going to ruin me). My coworker did this and the bar association has called her TWICE because they aren't able to contact two of her former employers. HELLO???? How about a little realism!?!?!??? Employers go out of business sometimes, you dig?

I also have to put down my father's name and address and I don't know if that means my deadbeat dad with whom I have spoken with once in the last 15 years outside of an occasional email and who is somewhat of an embarassment to me if they check up on his background ("somewhat" being a little bit of an understatement but we can talk about that offline some day) or if I can put down my stepfather who is the man I consider my father and who has a sterling reputation in his community and beyond.

This whole thing is making me nuts because they will actually write you a letter demanding an explanation of they find an inconsistency. I shouldn't have a problem being admitted because, somehow, given my shady past and many near-misses with the law, I'm totally clean. But I feel like they'll look at my application and see my filthy dirtbag past and use that to frustrate my attempts to pursue an honest, clean-cut future.

I just checked - jobs only go back for ten years. THANK FUCKING GOD.

I'm thinking about having myself skip traced. Seriously.

Yeah, I can't find that on Google and don't want to search through ILX because then ILX will break again.

We can all just close our eyes and imagine a thread that's all meaningless numbers. Which, of course, is what's cool about it.

I don't get this weather. I foolishly wore a long-sleeve shirt today.

Also: Kr just flew to O-ho-ho and won't be back until Sunday. Wah.

I bought a bunch of fall stuff with bday money, but I'm ok with today being gorgeous. Normally I'm not supposed to have the front door open, but some cabinet guys are delivering samples. Niiiicceeee...

Sausage-filled squid? Dan, you have the best luck with meats.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Hot Doug's should serve a squid-filled sausage.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:06 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, hafta wait until I get home and upload them though.

All it entailed was some friends grilling calimari and discovering that the squid's body was basically a tube once it was cleaned... A tube that (when cooked) was roughly the same diameter as the kielbasa I had brought. One thing led to another, and the squid got penetrated. Then it was passed around. Quite tasty with a green chile marinade!

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha, that is amazing.

One thing led to another, and the squid got penetrated.

My friend Nick in Chicago recently had a going away party for another friend. Apparently he got an entire lamb from a Halal market and roasted it on a spit in his backyard, organs and everything. Then people ate it.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Oof. I'd want the organs removed. Otherwise, sounds great.

this weekend i got drunk in the quarter, got arrested for public intoxication, spent a long fucking day in jail, went to court today, paid my fine and now i'm done with the mess.

today in court the docket included the following names

donald duk
steven king
donna reed
jodie foster

donna reed was the only one present.

WTF Jesse!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, what do you have to do to get arrested for public intoxication in the fucking French Quarter?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Pass out on a stoop without your driver's license, it seems.

I think it all sounds a little suspicious on the part of the NO cops, but what do I know. NOT MUCH THAT'S WHAT.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i was seated upon a stoop, resting my eyes.

the cop (tyr0n3 m1lls) said he would have just given me a ticket, but it's illegal to go around without ID in the state of LA. and they said that i would have to produce ID before i could get out, even if I posted bond and blew the whole department.

i met a young man who works in the campus rec marketing dept. at a local university. he is about 3 inches shorter than me, a soccer player and cute as a button. he and i have been emailing. he was charged with dui and driving the wrong way down a 1-way street (which was not marked at his turn because the storm blew down the signs, but whatever).

This event makes the my username more interesting. Especially considering the bars I had been to earlier in the night and the meaning of "pig" in gay slang.
