Can I chime in an add: yes, please put an extra special effort into a separate birthday, maybe even do a half-birthday thing in the middle of the year. Mine is the 20th and I was always told that I could just open a xmas present early, and that was about it for my entire childhood, except the 2 out-of-character parties my mum threw for my 4th and 5th birthdays.

Oh that's so sad. :(

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 16:28 (ten years ago) link

lol i know it makes me sound really pathetic but the upside is that ytth spoils me crazy-rotten every year bc he feels so sorry for me.

just1n3, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:04 (ten years ago) link

These are good suggestions! I like the idea of having a party on the half-birthday, since there will not be people around for a party on the kid's regular birthday, plus half birthday will be in June, which is a more screaming children's party-friendly time of year anyway. Telling a kid to open a Christmas present early is pretty sad! I'm glad you get spoiled now, just1n3.

This is the Krampus shirt I have - http://shirt.woot.com/offers/greetings-from-krampus. It is very fun to wear it to family holiday gatherings. And that design is available in a onesie - http://www.cafepress.com/mf/63438157/greetings-from-krampus_bodysuit. My mother is never going to speak to me again...

I'm the 21st, which means that every year I get a b'day call from my brother in which he adopts a sinister voice and growls "you were born on the daaaaaaarkest day of the yeeeeeear."

Honestly I think birthday obsession is a bit obnoxious in adults, so may as well start with keeping it pretty low-key with a kiddo? Anyhow I do always appreciate that my friend Lynne makes a special effort to wrap my b'day present and her BILs b'day present (he is the 25) in "Happy Birthday" paper and not not the handier christmas-y paper, which everyone has lying around at the time.

quincie, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:34 (ten years ago) link

That's something I will have to be mindful of as I wrap everybody's presents in Christmas paper, regardless of their birth date or the occasion, since that's all I ever have.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

Wrapping paper is stupid, anyway.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

I resent wrapping paper, FYI.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

I used to save the Sunday comics section (color) and wrap presents in that :)

quincie, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:37 (ten years ago) link

so do i
i will wrap everything in newpaper until there are no more newpapers
then i will wrap everything in pieces of recycled trash
then i will just toss presents at people

hahahah <3 u LL!

quincie, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

ha, glad someone does
i wrapped some presents last year in some old teaching materials (a giant Newsweek education poster about the electoral process iirc)
if ppl can't appreciate that, they can not receive presents from me anymore

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:40 (ten years ago) link

sorry i am talking about wrapping paper on your knocked up thread

I fully endorse your views and this conversation.

Actually carl I have to confess that while I am truly psyched for you and Jeff, there is a little tug on my heart that you will be leaving the married-without-children club, which is always lean on members.

quincie, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:42 (ten years ago) link

Aw, yeah, I can see that.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:44 (ten years ago) link

I worry about how friendships will change, too. Don't leave me because I reproduced, LL.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:46 (ten years ago) link

I won't. Don't leave me either!
I'm surprised there isn't a thread for that Time article that my mom and 3 other people tried to get me to read recently.

quincie, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 17:55 (ten years ago) link

I think a kid's birthday deserves a whole lot more celebration and fanfare than any Christian holiday, so I prefer to make the b-day the focus. I know it's impossible though when everything around you will be Christmas this and Christmas that, plus overwhelming pressure to celebrate from Christmas loving relatives. We should just move to a land of no Christmas.

Jeff, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 18:21 (ten years ago) link

Let's just tell the kid that all of the lights and fanfare are other people celebrating its birthday, too.

Our daughter was born on the 4th of July and we totally told her that!

cops on horse (WilliamC), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 18:53 (ten years ago) link

I know it's impossible though when everything around you will be Christmas this and Christmas that

It's really not impossible you just have to work a little harder at it. Plus, it's kind of awesome getting so many presents and it is a festive time of year so people are generally in a good mood. The 1/2 birthday idea is cool too though since there is more to do in the summer but honestly I always liked having a Christmas birthday and I think it's because my parents made a big point of not letting it get lost in all the holiday stuff.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 19:51 (ten years ago) link

Also, congrats Jeff :). I realized I only said that to CA before which isn't fair.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 19:52 (ten years ago) link

carl, are you feeling kicks and turns yet?
i have a supergross video i took of my belly when henry was doing amniotic aerobics one day. it was moving and stretching like an alien was trying to poke its way out.

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 19:54 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I can feel the little bugger in there a lot. Lots of blips and bloops and bubbles type feelings, but no real kicks or jabs. Although I might have gotten kicked in the stomach the other day (as in the baby kicked me in my actual stomach organ, not that somebody from the outside kicked me in the abdomen) because I felt that same BLOOP feeling, but in my stomach and I did not subsequently burp/fart so it wasn't gas. I can't see anything from the outside, but I'm only 21 weeks and also fat so I think the fetus will have to get a bit bigger before that happens.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 19:59 (ten years ago) link

I kind of want to see your video, though. I told Jeff that you could see stuff moving from the outside eventually and he was skeptical.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 20:02 (ten years ago) link

You totally can! It happened to my colleague in a big meeting :)

kinder, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 20:05 (ten years ago) link

oh there are tons of viedos on YouTube of that. They're so freaky. You can see elbows and even feet sometimes!

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

yeah. seeing from the outside is very much late in the pregnancy. ill try to find the video tonight!

I could see Evie's hands and feet and what-not toward the end. She was very active. I often had a weird lump wherever she was pushing. I thought it was cool.

Can I just... poor Jeff has born the brunt of my bitching about this particular issue so I just want to let it out elsewhere, but the state of plus size maternity clothes is so dire. Luckily (and only the dire state of plus size maternity wear could me characterize such a thing as "luck") I was so sick for the first five months that I dropped about 25 pounds, which puts me in Target and Old Navy's straight size XXL maternity for dresses and other stretchy knits so I'm not walking around naked. But even though I've been unable to stand anything constricting around my midsection since about week six I'm only now starting to show and need maternity clothes so who knows if those XXLs will work in the coming months.

Anyway, thank goodness I can work from home more or less at my whim because I have two outfits that I think are office appropriate, and the one I'm wearing today makes me feel like Dorothy Zbornak.

I'll keep at that or else I'll never stop typing, but let me just say that "plus size maternity tights" is the thing that is depressing me the most right now.

Okay thank you for letting me vent.
