WEDNESDAY FAP! ANYONE ELSE?

not some dude poking a Line 6 pedal with his dick (sarahell), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 00:07 (ten years ago) link

I'm going to call it at the Grand Cafe on Taylor and Geary, unless someone knows somewhere awesome nearish. We can have cocktails next to the Donnie Darko threeway sculpture.

If anyone's at the Stinking Rose tonight, say hello to the table with at least one person with blue hair.

There's a really hideous sculpture there.

The bar's pretty good for a hotel bar. I've been there many times.

If I'm in that area or have ppl staying at the Monaco, I'd be more inclined to dine at

http://www.jasperscornertap.com/

but I think I like the Grand Cafe bar better.

Acting Gov. Gavin Newsom arrived a half-hour late for the opening ceremony of the new Bay Bridge span and watched most of it from the sidelines.

After riding across the bridge with a motorcycle escort (and slowing down long enough to videotape the crossing for his kids), Newsom had to take a last-minute tutorial on how to use the welding torch to cut the chain marking the bridge's opening.

"Cal/OSHA certified the hair gel," he said. "They didn't want me to burn myself."

two weeks pass...

Hello Bay Areaxors! I am in town for a bit! Today and Thursday I am gonna chill here in Oakland, but I'm planning to cross the bay tomorrow and Saturday. My priorities are Golden Gate Park (tomorrow) and the Ferry Building market (Saturday). Culinary goals are oysters (I'm thinking Swan's Oyster Depot for that) and pho (suggestions on that are most welcome).

Any recommendations for eats in Oakland? Is the Burma Superstar over here a good bet? Any good Chinese (I would love DUMPLINGS!! and noodles, especially)? Also craving a great reuben or other deli sandwich. This is all stuff I'm sorely missing at my current outpost in rural Mexico.

quincie, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:48 (ten years ago) link

If you are at the Ferry building, just go to Hog Island IN the Ferry building for oysters.

For DUMPLINGS!, maybe hit Shanghai Dumpling King (http://www.yelp.com/biz/shanghai-dumpling-king-san-francisco) over on Balboa and 34th when you are at GG Park?

Have fun!

Burma Superstar is good. Get the tea leaf salad and the samusa soup.

Get DUMPLINGS! here: http://www.eastbayexpress.com/oakland/the-dumpling-of-champions/Content?oid=3713488, or at Shan Dong (they make their own noodles, and also make good DUMPLINGS!).

Get a deli sandwich at Genova Deli in Temescal.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:52 (ten years ago) link

I thought Burma Superstar was in Alameda, not Oakland...?

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:54 (ten years ago) link

dunno about delis in Oakland but the best reuben sandwich in SF is at Wise Sons on 24th St in the Mission. imho

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link

There's one in Alameda on Park and one on Telegraph in Temescal.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link

Actually I think the best reuben in the east bay might be at Saul's in Berkeley now that I think about it. Genova is better for italian sandwiches.

this place is amazing - http://www.vikschaatcorner.com/

it's in Berkeley

Be prepared to wait in line for Swan's. Can't wrong with Turtle Tower for phở.

Great suggestions, thanks! Looks like I can also score Ethiopian in Oakland at Addis. One last (and possibly dumbest ever) question: great source for bread in Oakland or SF?

The weather is so ridiculously awesome here that I don't know how I'm going to convince myself to get back to southern Baja, where it is still hotter than hell.

quincie, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:03 (ten years ago) link

I mean I just love the Bay Area so much, it is kind of weird that I have not moved here.

quincie, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:04 (ten years ago) link

Arizmendi Bakery in the Mission is good

you want to stand in line for an hour you can try the Tartine Bakery but there is literally a line around the block there every day....

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:07 (ten years ago) link

great source for bread in Oakland or SF?

La Farine in Oakland, Acme in Berkeley.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:09 (ten years ago) link

Tartine's ok to visit on a weekday - the earlier the better. If you really want a delicious pastry ...

eris bueller (lukas), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:10 (ten years ago) link

Hmmmmm I am up for waiting in a mega line for some things, but I don't really think it is necessary to queue up so hard to score decent bread in a town known for such. I'll try Arizmendi or La Farine!

quincie, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:10 (ten years ago) link

Are on public transport or driving?

not some dude poking a Line 6 pedal with his dick (sarahell), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:25 (ten years ago) link

There are a lot of great Ethiopian restaurants in Oakland, like every 5-10 blocks on Telegraph Ave. My faves are Cafe Colucci (which is near Addis) and also close to the Stranded record store, and Asmara, which is at 51st and Telegraph, across from the stripmall where Genoa Deli is, and a couple blocks from Burma Superstar

Enssaro is my fave ethiopian place

polyphonic, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:31 (ten years ago) link

Other good Oakland cheap food is Vietnamese - pho, ban mi, etc. - southeast of the lake/fruitvale area is where most of the places are, but there are a few downtown and in Chinatown

there's a street food fest in jack london square this weekend (starting friday): http://eatrealfest.com/event/Oakland/California/2013
i haven't been, but i was thinking about heading down there myself.

wmlynch, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:39 (ten years ago) link

I've gone to Eat Real before. Lots of great food, but very very busy.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:43 (ten years ago) link

perhaps not the best to take my 2 yr old to then. i don't think she likes crowds (i don't like them either).

wmlynch, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:46 (ten years ago) link

there's a nice selection of breweries too.

wmlynch, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 22:46 (ten years ago) link

get bent posted this in an sf thread that doesn't get much action so reposting it here:

y'all should come out and see ilxor zero of the signified play on a bill with henry kaiser at the luggage store on oct. 17!

http://y2kloopfest.com/experimental-side-of-the-y2k13-live-looping-festival/

and if you feel like trekking out to santa cruz, he'll be playing the loopfest headliners concert there on the 19th.

Thanks to this thread, I ate at Uva, Starbelly, Hog Island Oyster Co., and er somewhere else that I can't recall atm. Thanking u SFers! Oh and also Oaklanders: I got bread at La Farine, it was great.

quincie, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 03:12 (ten years ago) link

Ensarro! I also ate there. Um one more that I can't recall still. Also accidentally went to a bar in the Marina (?) that was exactly like trying to get a drink at a packed Abercrombie and Fitch (sp?). Great cocktail (Black Dahlia) but sooooooo not my scene.

quincie, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 03:14 (ten years ago) link

Do you like spicy? Eat at Pot Sticker! Make sure to get Sichuan specialties.

was hoping to find a good sichuan rec here. despite the generic name, pot sticker looks pretty serious (via yelp photos).

we're planning a meetup (do people still say "FAP"?) at 15 romolo on oct. 16 around 9pm. if it's too crowded, we can figure out something else, but it should be doable on a wednesday night. my stipulation was "good cocktail menu and cheap/interesting/veg-accommodating bar snacks."

I'm going to be in the area from late on the 18th through the morning of the 25th. Anyone want to grab a beer? Any places I just can't kiss?

well Alcatraz may still be closed, if you were planning to do a Blarney Stone.

I'm staying in Alameda but will be wandering through both sides of the bay. Happy to meet wherever.

I apologize for any fat finger typing errors like the kiss/miss one above. Shouldn't even try on my phone but such is life.

Pot Sticker was good last time I went.

EZ, I'll be on the East Coast that weekend.
