i don't really want to hear or think about these guys in the sphere of remix culture at all tbh

their other remixes are hot garbage so you might never have to

Lex not liking this is not shocking. Him not hearing the hooks in the Paramore album is a bit befuddling. It's got hooks for days.
― Greer, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link
I have tried so many times with that album but to no avail, every time I start wondering when it'll end about halfway through and I can never remember any of it when it ends. It's like if ashlee simpson made a really samey, really long, really one-note and personality-free album
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 22:14 (ten years ago) link
Like I can hear exactly how it should hit the spot for me but the songs are just not there

Is this album something I need to hear if I didn't like all their early stuff, or does this band still just sound like regurgitated Bloc Party?
― Evan R, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link
evan : i actually think this thread answers that very question
― mark e, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link
I didn't mean to be rude or lazy; I just read the posts under the "now skipping" jump and still couldn't really get a sense of whether this is something people are repping for or not
― Evan R, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:47 (ten years ago) link
no worries evan.
i did not mean to be snappy .. tis not my groove.
to answer your question : this thread implies that they are indeed ripping off bloc party (to a degree)
several ilm'rs love this album with a passion rarely seen in bits and bytes round these parts, the rest it's a resigned : 'meh ... '
for the record i'm with the 'meh .. '
― mark e, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:53 (ten years ago) link
ha I never really got too deeply into Bloc Party so my reaction to it was "this seems to be like a more successful version of what I think the Franz Ferdinand album is trying to do", an opinion I formed by playing three songs off of FF, getting bored, and switching over to The 1975
― WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:01 (ten years ago) link
bloc party had that one decent song
― fresh (crüt), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:04 (ten years ago) link
It doesn't take much for me to dismiss British buzz bands. I've been burned so, so many times (and the funny thing is I usually like the influences those bands are playing with, but they almost never add anything to them)
― Evan R, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:05 (ten years ago) link
And I liked that first Bloc Party album, too, but I don't need a second helping of more of the same. British post-punk is some of my favorite music ever, but the revival stuff gets more dire every year
― Evan R, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link
Given my first exposure to the band was listening to the EPs without prior exposure to the singles I'm finding people's reference points really curious even when objectively they make sense - but it's hard for me to conceive of a band who make songs like "Haunt // Bed" or "fallingforyou" as "ripping off Bloc Party".
― Tim F, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:09 (ten years ago) link
Oh dear. And I was going to upload the new Franz Ferdinand to my iPod for a plane ride tomorrow.

the fourth song on the new FF is the only good one, DJP!

i can't believe you have any time for franz ferdinand alfred smh, i thought you were proud of your taste
― lex pretend, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:16 (ten years ago) link
I have a lot of affection for about an album's worth of material.
― first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:16 (ten years ago) link
the fact is, if they had tried to rip off the departure then i would be more interested.
(now thats just bloody weird .. banquet has just dropped on the playlist .. )
― mark e, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:17 (ten years ago) link
Haha lex don't ever look at Alfred's people's list.
― Tim F, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:26 (ten years ago) link
The only song by The 1975 that I think sounds like Bloc Party would be "Sex", but that might just be due to my limited understanding of what Bloc Party sounds lke.
― MarkoP, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:34 (ten years ago) link
"chocolate" is such a great track. not too sure about the rest of the e.p. though
― Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:35 (ten years ago) link
"The City" is pretty Bloc Party, but the resemblance stops after those two tracks.

this album gets pretty dire for me when they slow down the tempo. i'm also puzzled as to how they had enough material to release a deluxe 2 CD EP. also puzzled by all the interludes (and, upon relistening to the paramore album, the interludes there as well).
― 乒乓, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:46 (ten years ago) link
― Tim F,
ha -- which?

as for this album, I decided this week is okay to meh because I have little patience for adenoids.
The EPs are pretty great, still getting into the album.
― MikoMcha, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:54 (ten years ago) link
Hey, "Sex" is pretty fantastic! Time to try the album...

pfork review is almost incredibly tone-deaf, so many bridges on this record?
/stan
Yeah slightly unusual song structures is actually a bit of a calling card for them?
My latest favourite thing/s are the "Hey!" punctuation shouts in "Girls".

i dunno why i called it a 2 CD EP
but a deluxe 2 CD package seems like something you'd release if you knew that the band wouldn't be around in another year
― 乒乓, Friday, 13 September 2013 12:19 (ten years ago) link
now embarking on the eps
'haunt/bed' sounds like ar kane, chuck it on the references pile would u sweetheart
― r|t|c, Friday, 13 September 2013 12:52 (ten years ago) link
Please live blog your reax - I feel like, more than the album, each song on the EPs is like it's own reference point ecosystem.

'so far / it's alright' posits them as black butter's fun boy three
'fallingforyou' gated drums could be anything, i will ambitiously stretch for maybe an imaginary extended 12" mix of peter gabriel / k8 bush 'don't give up'
― r|t|c, Friday, 13 September 2013 13:03 (ten years ago) link
excuse me while i put that last one on again cos it was really very good
― r|t|c, Friday, 13 September 2013 13:05 (ten years ago) link
Haha "black butter's fun boy three" is spot on.
"falllngforyou" makes me think of "let's go out tonight"
