dmr, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 21:06 (ten years ago) link

that paul simon/todd terje is all-time. maybe the best terje imo.

Wantaway striker (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 21:12 (ten years ago) link

totally-- i feel it has aged better than any other edit i was in to around 7 years ago

THANK YOU SO MUCH! You've literally made my day. Such an incredible record.

First track on this new International Feel 12" is a beaut:

this terje edit from way back 7 years ago is still pretty great too

this isn't very balearic but its sort of in a studio/AMO1 vein, i like it

the melody in that bob james song reminds me of one of the songs in wicker man

Loved the Terje remix but I think this one might be my favourite:

sweet late-night balearica (the sax makes it): Pharaohs - Oasiics

snoop dogey doge (seandalai), Thursday, 7 November 2013 01:06 (ten years ago) link

imo the sax ruins that song :-(

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Thursday, 7 November 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

The Pharaohs album is really good.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 7 November 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link

^ awesome. sax has never really ruined anything for me tbh

and god, that vollenweider edit is sooo good. i always bring the 12" with that and the chris rea edit with me when i play out, but i never have the balls to play anything but the rea side

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Thursday, 7 November 2013 20:32 (ten years ago) link

dont get me wrong, the sax could have been great but its kind of a mess imo

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Thursday, 7 November 2013 20:33 (ten years ago) link

gr80 I've "repped" for them before but I think you'd like almunia. Actually you have probably already heard them!

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 7 November 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link

weird how much people are name-dropping the cat people soundtrack these days, maybe it's just me tho? i've always liked it but it seems to have gained some new classic touchstone status recently

that pharoahs track seems more isham/o'hearn than anything else

The debut album from Cinematic Orchestra's Phil France is probably going to end up my favourite release of the year. Gorgeous stuff

My most listened to mix of the year, unless it's 2nd behind the Beautiful Swimmers Test Pressing thing.

Plasmon, Thursday, 28 November 2013 22:44 (ten years ago) link

eoy list roundups have recently brought saada bonaire to my attention... (WARNING: video is nsfw)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWVFzQoTQ1w

i listened to this without knowing anything about it and was surprised at how perfectly it was touching on all my favorite early 80s balearic touchstones... then i realized it was legit unreleased stuff from the '80s. so maybe not balearic "revival" per se

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:14 (ten years ago) link

yeah apparently the one single they actually released (You Could Be More Who You Are) was a legit "early '80s balearic touchstone." that record is really great I think. been listening a ton on spotify but haven't come across the vinyl yet.

dmr, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:30 (ten years ago) link

I would have slotted it under post-punk myself but can definitely see how it fits nicely into this sound.

dmr, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:31 (ten years ago) link

yeah i mean there's definitely some postpunk in there, alongside a whole lot of sultry saxophone and beach sounds, post-punk can be balearic

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:36 (ten years ago) link

word

dmr, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

i also didn't realize that the single was produced by dennis bovell!

fwiw they also happen to be balearic dreambabes

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:58 (ten years ago) link

Awesome track.

just discovered that most (maybe all?) of pacific horizons' output is up on spotify, the new track "bandini" is kinda nice. their whole schtick is a lot more lo-fi than i realized, it works great at times but can kinda clash with some of the other, more relaxed sounds

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Thursday, 12 December 2013 19:16 (ten years ago) link

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Friday, 10 January 2014 23:55 (ten years ago) link

Sure it's been mentioned before. Great track anyway and was the winner of DJ History's Furtive 50 poll, stopping Terje from completing a hat trick of successive wins.

There's a 15 minute film here:
