I dunno, I kinda feel like hearing loss doesn't completely obliterate an appreciation for quality recordings. those recent swans records sound incredible, and I suspect it's not just because gira surrounds himself w/ quality ppl, and I can't think of a better poster child for hearing loss.

teenagers can hear frequencies old bastards like us can't, but I'm sure I've got a better ear for recording quality than the avg teen. having a discerning ear is an instinct, a way of listening that goes beyond frequency cutoffs.

cool cover, still not that excited about this.

tylerw, Monday, 21 October 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link

cool cover, though it's pretty silly we're getting another acoustic gig from that era with a lot of songs that have been duplicated on other releases

i guess there is a cinnamon girl on piano, i would hear that, but i will listen to it once on youtube out of curiosity

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 21 October 2013 20:49 (ten years ago) link

even the archives stuff we've been given past this period is still neil in country/harvest mode, right?

da croupier, Monday, 21 October 2013 20:50 (ten years ago) link

yeah -- dreaming man and a treasure.

tylerw, Monday, 21 October 2013 20:56 (ten years ago) link

i guess it's arguable that crazy horse is well-represented by live albums (live rust, weld, year of the horse etc), but there really shouldn't be two 1970 solo discs before there's one live 76 set.

tylerw, Monday, 21 October 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

maybe Neil likes that he gets paid more for the solo albums than having to share dough with the Horse

Euler, Monday, 21 October 2013 21:13 (ten years ago) link

i want to hear some live horse

this is one of my fave 76 bootlegs - http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/2012/09/24/neil-young-crazy-horse-fukuoka-japan-march-8-1976/

Cellar Door was so small (I saw a show there 9 years after Neil Young was there). Would have been great to have seen there. But yeah, more Neil with Horse would be better

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:05 (ten years ago) link

yeah i've seen pics of the cellar door interior - easy to imagine seeing a solo singer-songwriter there, but realllllly hard to imagine what it was like to see Miles Davis' group there in 1970.

tylerw, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:08 (ten years ago) link

Odds that this will be included in Archives II? Good.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 18:47 (ten years ago) link

Isn't it outside the timeline for Archives II?

A Made Man In The Mellow Mafia (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 18:54 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, Miles in that room was probably like a 747 jet engine in a closet.

xp

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 18:56 (ten years ago) link

yeah would be weird if it was in archives II -- should've been in archives 1, chronologically speaking. but neil does what neil wants, so who knows.

tylerw, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 19:04 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I guess it's a different era.

Mostly just venting, because including those live albums in the last box was pretty lame, seeing as they were sold stand alone months in advance, no? I'm wary of buying any Neil stand alone stuff at this point. It'd be like paying for access to a Prince website. Caveat emptor.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 19:37 (ten years ago) link

they should all just be stand alone imo -- maybe two-disc archives releases a la dylan's bootleg series instead of these massive box sets.

tylerw, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 19:51 (ten years ago) link

yeah that would be great....

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 20:10 (ten years ago) link

just like, here's two discs of the time fades away tour, here's two discs of tonight's the night sessions, here's two discs of tonight's the night live stuff, here's two discs of on the beach sessions... etc! not that complicated!

tylerw, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 20:12 (ten years ago) link

two weeks pass...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82gvrh6GXuE
trailer for the cellar door thing. complained upthread, but the snippets sound kind of cool -- that piano "cinnamon girl"! and piano "flying on the ground is wrong"!

tylerw, Saturday, 9 November 2013 21:13 (ten years ago) link

ok, the solo piano "expecting to fly" makes this release worthwhile

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 20:47 (ten years ago) link

haha damnit tyler i'm a little broke lately!!!! quit it!

the vinyl is reallllly expensive imho

Vic Arpeggio, Private Investigator (stevie), Wednesday, 13 November 2013 15:59 (ten years ago) link

All his recent vinyl releases have been prohibitively expensive. He must really hate the format, and want people to avoid it.
