What is "hogging the middle lane"? I thought that was the whole point of the middle lane -- for when you wanna just drive the speed limit or w/e. There are other lanes for passing and/or entering/exiting.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 13:59 (ten years ago) link

yeah hogging the passing lane is the real crime

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:01 (ten years ago) link

i do support immediate execution for chilling in the passing lane and tailgating tho

Who wouldn't be proud to be British after creating that macro?

pplains, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:02 (ten years ago) link

can't see the macro at work but the middle lane on UK motorways is a passing lane and only the worst subhuman beasts drive along it all day like it wasn't

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:04 (ten years ago) link

whats the left lane for then

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:05 (ten years ago) link

You mean the right lane.

pplains, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:05 (ten years ago) link

o shit

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:06 (ten years ago) link

the left lane is the lane to drive in if it's clear in front of you. the other two lanes are both for over-taking depending on speed and volume of traffic. there's a habit amongst terrible drivers of joining the motorway, heading straight for the middle lane and then sitting there til they leave the motorway, even when the left hand lane is clear as far as the eye can see. it forces people into the fast lane because you can only overtake to the right.

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:07 (ten years ago) link

does the middle lane refer to the middle of the 3 in each direction, or the two middle in the center of the six total?

how's life, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:08 (ten years ago) link

doesnt seem like the best use of space to have two passing lanes and then one where everyone is supposed to cruise and enter/exit thats prob why yr empire crumbled

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:08 (ten years ago) link

Maybe UK driving is just different (I mean aside from the obvious right vs. left) -- in the US the right lane is the one all the entry and exit ramps feed into, so it really makes no sense to stay in that lane because you constantly have to slow down for people entering and exiting. Hence the middle lane is for driving and the left lane is for passing.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:10 (ten years ago) link

driving is shit. there should be no lanes.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:10 (ten years ago) link

middle lane = middle of 3 in each direction

i assume in general the distance between our motorway off-ramps is greater than the distance between yr highway off-ramps

anyway i know where this is heading, i'll look up comparative accident stats and you can get ready with the Battle of Lexington jpegs

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:12 (ten years ago) link

OUTER LANE (closest to shoulder) - For merging onto the freeway; slow drivers wearing formal headwear; big slow trucks.

CENTER (CENTRE) LANE - For most motorists, so they don't have to keep bouncing between outer and center lane whenever an old man in a hat begins merging from an on-ramp.

INNER LANE (closest to the median) - People in a hurry; Knight Rider; Cops

pplains, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:12 (ten years ago) link

also Neanderthal sort of otm except driving is great, just morally reprehensible

pplains, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:13 (ten years ago) link

srsly tho youre trying to put most of the traffic in one lane when you have three why, you dont need two lanes for passing

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:13 (ten years ago) link

at most points on the motorway the system works out as 3 lanes of traffic moving at increasing speed as you go to the right - except most of the time at least one of the lanes will be blocked off and there'll be traffic signals and speed limits in force - but there are big swathes of motorway where there's nobody in front of you for a couple of miles even in the left hand lane

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:15 (ten years ago) link

America builds highway exits every 100 feet because we need to be able to get absolutely anywhere by only driving on a highway.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:16 (ten years ago) link

i'm not defending this as a paragon of systems thinking btw

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:16 (ten years ago) link

distance between off-ramps on motorways as an average must be 8 or 9 miles

this is what happens when you build a low-quality road network not intended to be used as an emergency landing strip for long distance bombers

what I'm basically saying is that if people stopped driving on them they'd be doing better

is space noise (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link

If more people drove in the middle lane, it would spread wear more evenly on the road surface and reduce the need for repairs. Especially trucks, they're always wearing out the slow lane. Just move over and let that tarmac recover a little.

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:39 (ten years ago) link

How do they define hogging the middle lane, is what I'd like to know.
I've been forced to be in it for a while (not all the livelong day) because of the speed of vehicles in the other lanes.
When I'm joining the motorway I appreciate it when other ppl move over into the middle lane.

Ever seen the inside of a Geo Metro?

I was in a three-car accident once with one of those. My first thought was Wow, that woman was carrying around a lot of fishing bait.

Ever seen the inside of a Geo Metro?

I drove one for about two years , and it was quite possibly one of the cheapest, most unsafe pieces of crap ever. :(. Glad I never got in a wreck in it.

3 cylinder vehicle, went from 0-60 if the stars were aligned right and you had the luck to be going down a hill.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 15:54 (ten years ago) link

when gas spiked up to $4 here the prices on those things (routinely sold for $1000-$2000) literally doubled because they got such insane mileage. so bizarre to see Metros suddenly be the car to own (for about 3 months)

I was riding in a girl's Ford Aspire (same concept - 3 cylinder death trap). She hit a piece of concrete on the highway and a few miles later her right front tire blew out.
I've been rear-ended and hit from the side twice at speed, plus accidents as a child - that blowout in the Aspire was the most terrifying thing I've experienced.

Apparently it is also the law that if you are about to miss your exit you must fly across three lanes of traffic to make it instead of going on to the next exit

oh traffic woah(!)s
