yeah pp, the joke is half the motorway is being dug up and worked on at any one time. especially during holidays.

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:20 (ten years ago) link

this is what happens when you build a low-quality road network not intended to be used as an emergency landing strip for long distance bombers

I know. We can't all be North Korea, now can we.

Not even going to get into how U.S interstates also suffer continuous construction but without traffic signals.

roads basically have to be repaired a lot is one of the things abt roads, especially in places with winter

and semi trucks

is space noise (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link

what I'm basically saying is that if people stopped driving on them they'd be doing better

is space noise (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link

If more people drove in the middle lane, it would spread wear more evenly on the road surface and reduce the need for repairs. Especially trucks, they're always wearing out the slow lane. Just move over and let that tarmac recover a little.

cars should be made out of styrofoam

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:35 (ten years ago) link

^^^ i've thought this in the past, then you cd decriminalize DUI and speeding

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:39 (ten years ago) link

How do they define hogging the middle lane, is what I'd like to know.
I've been forced to be in it for a while (not all the livelong day) because of the speed of vehicles in the other lanes.
When I'm joining the motorway I appreciate it when other ppl move over into the middle lane.

Ever seen the inside of a Geo Metro?

I was in a three-car accident once with one of those. My first thought was Wow, that woman was carrying around a lot of fishing bait.

pplains, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 15:45 (ten years ago) link

yup, inside of most bumpers now is just impact foam, instead of a hard bumper attached to the frame

Ever seen the inside of a Geo Metro?

I drove one for about two years , and it was quite possibly one of the cheapest, most unsafe pieces of crap ever. :(. Glad I never got in a wreck in it.

3 cylinder vehicle, went from 0-60 if the stars were aligned right and you had the luck to be going down a hill.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 15:54 (ten years ago) link

when gas spiked up to $4 here the prices on those things (routinely sold for $1000-$2000) literally doubled because they got such insane mileage. so bizarre to see Metros suddenly be the car to own (for about 3 months)

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 15:56 (ten years ago) link

I was riding in a girl's Ford Aspire (same concept - 3 cylinder death trap). She hit a piece of concrete on the highway and a few miles later her right front tire blew out.
I've been rear-ended and hit from the side twice at speed, plus accidents as a child - that blowout in the Aspire was the most terrifying thing I've experienced.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 15:58 (ten years ago) link

i used to drive my brothers girlfriend manual 3 cylinder car. that was one of the most fun cars to drive.

America builds highway exits every 100 feet because we need to be able to get absolutely anywhere by only driving on a highway.

Apparently it is also the law that if you are about to miss your exit you must fly across three lanes of traffic to make it instead of going on to the next exit

oh traffic woah(!)s

Sacramento highway roadwork = scrape off surface, widen lanes, mark lanes with those bullshit stuck-on plastic things and never repaint or resurface

exciting fun when you switch from surface painted to scraped barren wasteland OH HEY WHERE DID MY LANE GO

or just do loads of midnight construction to repave the emergency lane and leave the rest of the highway falling apart yr tax dollars at work etc

Can we get 46,867 RETWEETS to remember ALL of the 46,867 soldiers, firefighters, and civilians who died of 9/11-related causes.

immediately after 9/11 the ny post ran some cartoons of like spider-man + batman deferring to the brave firefighters, and stuff like that. does anyone know where i can find digital copies of those op-eds? they were terrible but i haven't really seen them since.
