Ugh, the 5c colors are fucking hideous though. At least they look that way on the Apple website. I guess there's the white option.

the candy plastic iPhone is probably gonna end up being a genius mass market move for them per usual

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:51 (ten years ago) link

looks like something aimed at teenaged girls tbh

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:53 (ten years ago) link

this blog says the 5 camera isn't much better than the 4s -- it's mostly the display that's better
This guy says the camera isn't much better
http://www.imore.com/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-camera

Maybe I'll just get the 5s after all. Or maybe I'll just say "fuck it, I don't actually need a new phone at all."

mass market just b/c it's $100 less than the top market model? don't get that when you're paying $203854u224 per month no matter what smartphone you have

Euler, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:55 (ten years ago) link

tempted to buy one of these fuckers outright and get one of those $50/month plans

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:56 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I don't get that either. But in a way it seems like the 5c is primarily a move to replace the old phenomenon of "the last phone gets cheaper when the new one comes out," which might be a clever way to sell more phones and convince more people not to wait to upgrade.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:57 (ten years ago) link

xp everyone should do that and america is weird

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:58 (ten years ago) link

5c seems like a cross between that, a way to make the fucker cheaper to manufacture, and also make it more resistant to warranty claims since I'd bet the plastic is less likely to get fucked up

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:58 (ten years ago) link

in other words, the 5c is the mass market one for people who drop their phone a million times and can't be bothered to buy a case that costs more than $5

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:59 (ten years ago) link

One point my co-worker made -- while fingerprints might be extraordinarily hard to "hack," once someone figures out to do it, you can't change them.

This, plus shared family plans bring down the cost of monthly plans a good amount. It's more the look and feel of it, it made me think immediately of the those rainbow iPod minis and late '90s iMacs

Of course, I personally will definitely spend the $100 and get the manly man version, but I think it looks brighter/more fun and inviting compared to just about every other smartphone you'll see at the Verizon store, even including the shiny new Samsungs

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:00 (ten years ago) link

but you can get a cheapo $3 case off eBay/Monoprice/whatever that will do that job

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:01 (ten years ago) link

The only reason I haven't switched to a contract-free plan is that the contract carriers have better coverage. I'm considering jumping over to T-Mobile's contract-free plans though once my wife is also out of contract with Verizon in a few months. The way the contract plans distort the pricing is kind of weird -- you pay double the 5S vs the 5C in contract, but only like 20% more if you buy outright.

incidentally, Elvis Costello is kind of a poor choice for a brand trying to stay relevant

well they'd have to hack it 10 times, amirite

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:07 (ten years ago) link

the US mass market is not the market they have principally in mind with either of these phones (nor the principal market they've had in mind for a few years). imo ppl here and pundits who should know much better are making a mistake if they try to figure out what's going on by thinking about "$99 with 2 year contract", at&t vs verizon, family plans (lol), messaging plans, etc. the US market is totally unrepresentative, and compared to basically everywhere except japan, korea and western europe, totally saturated.

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:09 (ten years ago) link

also stop putting cases on your phones you nerds

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:10 (ten years ago) link

I wouldn't caek, but I drop things. I've been a better person this phone, I swear.

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:11 (ten years ago) link

btw not putting a case on your phone is the most non-design nerd move, most cases are phenomenally not-nerdish and yet very uncool

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:11 (ten years ago) link

err, I mean not using a case is a design nerd thing

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:12 (ten years ago) link

do you carry your phone in a hip holster?

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:13 (ten years ago) link

xp but outside the US is paying $599 vs. $699 really a "mass market" move?

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:13 (ten years ago) link

er 549 vs 649 rather

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:13 (ten years ago) link

i'm not saying it's a mass market move anywhere (although it kind of is via the colours). i'm saying stop thinking about the us phone industry if you want to understand apple.

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:14 (ten years ago) link

I put a case on my 4 because I didn't want to scratch the glass. If I get a 5c (likely), I may skip the case.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:17 (ten years ago) link

I have a case on my 4 because I have cement floors at work and at home and I'm a klutz of the highest order.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:19 (ten years ago) link

true, that

no I don't have a goddamn hip holster, I have a pretty minimal shell that keeps the sucker from shattering when I drop it on the corner. I'm done with Apple designerd apologia that insists that an iPhone is an objet d'art and, although destructible, can't be sheathed because it detracts

I don't have my iPad in any such thing, though.

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:20 (ten years ago) link

my 4s has no scratches on it. literally none. it's lived in a pocket with my keys for like 3 years. i mean if you're a dropper then fine, but if you're doing it to stop screen scratching then fyi it's not necessary.

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:21 (ten years ago) link

I have a sweet old Nokia candy bar with scratches and divots all over the outside that still works perfectly well, but it's all plastic

agreed completely, I've never covered the screen and am only concerned with dropping

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

idgaf if the back of my phone gets all scratched, either

Euler, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

My 4s has scratches, but they're all from the first week. Faintly remember some talk at the time about some coating need time to harden. Since the very first ones were straight from the factory and they didn't have time to set.

iPhone 5 case scratches up like an OG iPod Nano, tho

stet, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:25 (ten years ago) link

i am a habitual phone dropper, so crap case and screen protectors are always a-go

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:26 (ten years ago) link

family plans (lol)

Why lol? A 2-year family plan usually saves you money over two separate contract-free phones -- it's a pretty reasonable way to go for US customers, unless things have changed a lot since the last time I set this up.

But what do I know, I keep my iP5 in a case. (My old one, caseless, never got scratched, but I just like the heft of it in my hand with the case on.)

caek otm about focus on non us markets. Samsung is eating apples lunch in asia

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:36 (ten years ago) link

gold iphone! game over, samsung

"Faintly remember some talk at the time about some coating need time to harden. Since the very first ones were straight from the factory and they didn't have time to set."

that sounds ridiculous.

akm, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:37 (ten years ago) link

Does a $549 iphone become price competitive with samsung?

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:39 (ten years ago) link

Yeah

not saying lol at the people who choose them. it's a totally sensible thing to do given the options.

but you know what would be better than family plans saving you a little bit of money? sanely priced individual contracts (i.e. 80-90% less than what they cost now).

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:46 (ten years ago) link

due to government/industry collusion there's not much else we can do about it

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:48 (ten years ago) link

at least t-mobile usa is getting some part of it right -- if you buy an iPhone outright it's the base price, but if you subsidize it over a contract period you actually end up paying a little less for it

I mean, rather than the current system where you pay some fake number and then get jacked for a high amount every month regardless of what device you chose

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:49 (ten years ago) link

dy, do people mostly own their phones in HK or do they get them as part of a contract?

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:52 (ten years ago) link

Everybody owns. No contracts

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:55 (ten years ago) link

Well there are contractual deals

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 19:55 (ten years ago) link

HK otm

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 20:00 (ten years ago) link

How does paying for a phone on t-mobile monthly compare to buying it outright? Do they effectively charge interest or is it the same price divided by 24 months?

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 20:01 (ten years ago) link

Lock in contracts severely disadvantage apple. They can only sell phones to people every 2 years

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 20:01 (ten years ago) link

And for people willing to pay the upgrade fee, locked phones severely limit who they can sell their phones to
