no doubt Verizon sucks, but in all my years of hearing about people on other carriers complaining about service, I've never heard someone complain about Verizon. I switched from Sprint to Verizon years ago and have never had coverage complaints.

yeah, at work I support mobile phones for national field sales and after dealing with many carriers there's no getting around the fact that verizon is signal king. customer service ain't bad either tho their plans and policies can get a little byzantine.

a hard dom is good to find (Edward III), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 21:46 (ten years ago) link

their signal is great. My main complaint is the confusion I experience almost every other month in trying to figure out what I am paying and why

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 21:49 (ten years ago) link

and I find their service reps often misrepresent things to me, whether deliberately or not

its deliberate

They have that thing where if you can go over your minutes, you can supposedly "backdate" a higher minutes plan. Only when I tried to do this, they didn't actually backdate the plan like I asked them to (in writing, it was a chat) and as a result I was billed significantly MORE money than I would have been, because they "prorated" my 700 minutes plan for the first 21 days of the month (the period during which I went over), resulting in me going even FURTHER over. ARGHHHHH!

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

I had to threaten to leave (I am out of contract) to get them to fix this.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

That shit is typical. I was the release coordinator and before that QA for their billing system. There is really no way I can think of to do that in there.

AT&T, on the other hand, offered to up my plan (didnt know there was such a thing at the time!)and ended up saving me close to $350 when I once completely miscalculated the data I would use internationally. I've never had a problem with them but to be honest i rarely call them.

(xxxp) they bought the company i was working for, alltel, which had the regonial USA covered so, yeah, i bet their signal is great.

xp definitely find the gold phone a little trashy. doesn't seem like a move Jobs would have allowed.

LOL at Nokia bashing on gold phone when they were responsible for this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertu

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:24 (ten years ago) link

iirc I switched at&t plans mid-month once via the website and it actually asked if I wanted it to be effective that day, the beginning of the current billing period, or the beginning of the next

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:24 (ten years ago) link

verizon's site does that too but (surprise!) there are often reasons why you can't do changes through the website. For example, if you've already made one change that month through the website, you can't make another for some reason. Also there are timing issues.

Guys, 64 bit is a big deal. This is Apple actually hinting where they're going next and we won't feel the full impact of it for a year or two. 64 bit in this release feels like a technical solution now to a problem that's in the pipeline rather than a feature that people will wank themselves to death over today. At which point the 5S you buy today will still be supported while the 5Cs are on the junk heap.

is the future problem video games with crazy math?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:42 (ten years ago) link

apple gives 0 fucks about people who think the gold iphone is ugly. it + the CIRCLE AROUND THE HOME BUTTON allows them to capture people who care about letting everybody know that they have the newest iphone. this has been a problem for apple since the 3g and 3gs

But the 4 looked different than the 3 and the 5 is different dimensions than the 4. It's not hard to tell them apart pretty quickly.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:48 (ten years ago) link

you could tell the 4 and 4s apart?

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:50 (ten years ago) link

No. The 4 half-step didn't have an obvious change that all the rest have. You made a broad statement that was valid only once.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:53 (ten years ago) link

yah I think we're talking 3->3gs and 4->4s and 5->5s here, the ones where people couldn't tell if you had a BRAND NEW phone or a year old one

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:55 (ten years ago) link

twice!

also the original and 3 looked pretty close to identical

what was the big difference between the 3g and 3gs?

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:56 (ten years ago) link

it's common knowledge that apple refreshes the iphone every 2 years. this allows them to pass off the in-between model as being a 'significant' update because you DON'T HAVE TO ENTER A 4 DIGIT PIN ANYMORE, wow, so fresh

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 22:58 (ten years ago) link

There wasn't one. The ticks are usually big changes, the tocks have been near-indistinguishable so far

Xp tbf that camera stuff does look p. nice

the other thing the fingerprint sensor feels like a solution to is iphone theft. i wonder if you're still able to wipe the 5s completely and start again without authorization from the computer it was set up on

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:03 (ten years ago) link

also apple could also just let the NSA in and have free fingerprint scans of all iphone users

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:04 (ten years ago) link

ding ding

forevermore (a maven) (Matt P), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:05 (ten years ago) link

You can now set it (either ON it or with Find My iPhone) to lock until password/fingerprint given. In that state you can't even restore it or access it over USB at all.

The fingerprint stuff is really all just convenience though: it's not extra security because there's always a password fallback. (you can set a really strong password though, now that you don't have to type it all the time)

In other news, 7GM is massacring my battery. But typing is a bit laggy too, so I wonder if some background process is countering on.

stet, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:11 (ten years ago) link

what was the big difference between the 3g and 3gs?

Biggest leap in camera quality of all the iterations.

Alba, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:12 (ten years ago) link

sure but my point was that there was no physical difference between the 3g and 3gs

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:12 (ten years ago) link

Oh right - yeah.

Fingerprint reader is huge leap in security for me, btw, as at the moment I only turn the passcode lock on when I'm out getting drunk or otherwise have special reason to worry about losing it. Other times I just use my phone too much for the inconvenience of typing a number to seem worth it to me. If I can unlock a phone without looking at it, that's a pretty big feature for me.

Alba, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link

there were rumors that the fingerprint home button was also a rocker gamepad button...

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:17 (ten years ago) link

To get my work email I have to set a 6-digit pass code that takes immediate effect, so I'm really keen on the fingerprint reader.

5s somehow seems like a much bigger deal to me than the original 5 was.

not enough bits

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:37 (ten years ago) link

grubes gets it

Here’s the thing. The iPhone 5C has nothing to do with price. It probably does have something to do with manufacturing costs (which are lower for Apple), but not price. Apple’s years-long strategy hasn’t really changed. They offer three phones:

This year’s, with the latest technology.
Last years’s, starting $100 lower.
Two-year-old model, free on contract, $200 lower unsubsidized.

It’s just that instead of putting the year-old iPhone 5 in slot #2, they’ve created the 5C. The 5C is, effectively, an iPhone 5. Same A6, same camera, same just about everything — except for the most obvious difference, its array of colorful plastic shells. This is not an iPod Touch with a cellular antenna (the iPod Touch, which was not updated today, still has an A5 chip and roughly 4S specs). The prices of their tiers remain the same as last year. What changes with the 5C is that the middle tier is suddenly more appealing, and has a brand of its own that Apple can promote apart from the flagship 5S.

In marketing, what looks new is new.
