so appreciation of ease of use it seems comes w experince

suspect this has more to do with cheapo android phones falling apart or schizing out 1 year into ppl's 2 year commitments. you don't really know how easy a phone is to use until you live with it.

the video for ios7 is pretty fucking well done

every apple video reminds me of daily show parodies now.

also, having spent some time with android 4.3 in the past week (wholly impressive btw), i'm stoked for ios7. ios6 is obv musty as hell, but you do forget how much joy is to be had from a new/revised ios until you chuck yourself into one.

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link

you mean the experience of living with it xp

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 September 2013 22:52 (ten years ago) link

also, at the risk of starting a shitfight, i'm amazed at how many people call it 'eye oh ess' instead of 'eye oss'. still. yes i know jony does it.

apple comes up with the coolest pointless shit, like that thing in the video where the "layers" are 3-D when you turn the phone, total novelty feature but so awesome

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:03 (ten years ago) link

idk anyone who pronounces OS as "oss" other than some nerd adherents

if you pronounce it i-os you probably mean this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_orifice_of_the_uterus

well im sure they would argue its not pointless as conveying the visual metaphor of layers is pretty essential to the usability of the new os, or least that seems to be what theyre saying, ill reserve judgement until i use it

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:11 (ten years ago) link

mostly you're like "why is this kind of transparent it's all blurry"

ya i wonder abt how busy it will feel, overall tho imho it looks like a huge improvement

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link

someone shd make a magic eye os tho imho

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:16 (ten years ago) link

I like iOS 7 pretty well overall! I have none of the GUI hate, if anything there could be a lil more configurability when it comes to the slide-up control but it's pretty smooth.

The early betas were pretty hilariously glitchy

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:17 (ten years ago) link

i have to admit i have only been able to see a magic eye image once in my entire damn life :(

obv i've not used it, but i feel some (not necessarily here) are being overly harsh on ios7, given that it's essentially the first attempt at what it is. i've never seen an os that was perfect in its first iteration.

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:20 (ten years ago) link

even iphone os v2 was plagued with problems (who could forget the shitty laggy crashy keyboard)

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:22 (ten years ago) link

seems like a lot of the complaints are more designy eg the icon grid, colors etc rather than usability based which leads me to believe it prob works p good

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:23 (ten years ago) link

haha yes exactly

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 12 September 2013 23:23 (ten years ago) link

They should make it so when you have a photo of a face on screen, the eyes follow you when you move the phone

yeah, apart from lingering battery worries, ios7 is shaping up pretty great. The only thing I still don't like are the icons themselves, and it's mainly Mail and Safari that bug me

stet, Friday, 13 September 2013 00:25 (ten years ago) link

wait are there people who don't pronounce iOS as eye oh ess?

i too went to college (silby), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:48 (ten years ago) link

I'm always confused on ilxor when the residents of commonwealth nations talk about how they pronounce things

Usability is pretty great. I'm reminded of the 10.2 UI (all grey lines everywhere) which was headache-inducing at first, but refined over-and-over in time.

Am I the only one who's finding the iPhone 5S to be a snoozer? Sure it's got some serious spec bumps in the chips, some useful camera upgrades, and the fingerprint reader, but I don't envision lines going around city blocks at Apple stores come 20 September. I still want one, but I'd take a wider screen, a 128GB model, selectable password protection, and an extra row or two on the virtual keyboard over the new features we did get. And iOS7 feels like it's playing catch-up.

574 srsly (Lee626), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:04 (ten years ago) link

what is selectable password protection?

caek, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:05 (ten years ago) link

I don't see it as any different than the last few releases in that regard. There will still be lines, I'm sure.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:05 (ten years ago) link

a 128GB model

This, but I'm resigned to 32 or 64 for the foreseeable future.

― caek, Friday, September 13, 2013 1:05 PM (7 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

ability to require a password for only particular apps or features, such as email access or deleting photos. Apple allows you to lock down the whole phone with a passcode (and now with a fingerprint), but I'm mostly fine with others using my phone for games, maps, weather, web browsing, and such, but there's no way to have just the mail client have a password so everyone can't read my emails. I may also want some photos off limits or some people on social apps, but Apple's only option is all or nothing.

yeah they have 5-year-old iPod Classics they want to sell

574 srsly (Lee626), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:20 (ten years ago) link

xp ok but that's not a phone feature. nothing to do with the new 5s. that's an OS or app level feature (e.g. my banking app asks for a password every time even though i don't have the latest hardware)

i do think ios should have an equivalent of guest mode on os x, especially for ipad.

caek, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link

128GB would make zero money for them. you all have crazy usage patterns. live in the now.

caek, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

yeah i know most people only use a couple of home screens and a couple gigs of music but come on, FEED ME MORE!

Nhex, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:03 (ten years ago) link

how am I supposed to shoot my 60-fps remake of Satantango on a 32GB phone?!

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link

When I switched to a HTC One for the bigger screen, I underestimated how much the one-handed nature of the iPhone made it easier to use for texting, typing, pretty much anything aside from games.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:30 (ten years ago) link

yeah I don't want a phone much bigger than the iphone 5, hope that if apple releases a bigger phone that they keep the 5 form factor too. those big phones look bad for usability

Euler, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

few friends of mine have a samsung Note and it's like comically sized

乒乓, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

I would like the iphone to get maybe a little wider. certainly not longer

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:48 (ten years ago) link

if they're going to have two models anyway, why not offer two sizes

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:48 (ten years ago) link

they offer three, it's just the other two are the iPad mini and iPad

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:51 (ten years ago) link

eh, i like them sticking to their simpler product lines tbh - let the other manufacturers go crazy with the options

Feel like the gold iPhone might be one of those Apple things that you LOL at until you see it in person and are all "Hmm. That's actually pretty slick." I can see it taking off.
