Passbook? The only uses I've had for it are a credit card thing that shows the last charge posted and plane tickets. Works well for plane tickets.

only prob is that it's usefulness is constrained by the fact you could just go to any individual app and see the same info. just not enough stuff to make it a useful hub in itself, yet

passbook is sweet for my american airlines gold status card /braggin

Euler, Thursday, 19 September 2013 19:04 (ten years ago) link

Cyclemeter, which I use every day when biking, is now utterly ridiculous looking after being updated for iOS7. Like, Microsoft Bob levels of silly.

i don't get it though - i got, for instance, the moviefone app, which is listed as a passbook app. but i open passbook and it just tells me to download more passbook apps?

Nhex, Thursday, 19 September 2013 19:05 (ten years ago) link

something in moviefone, probably a movie ticket or something, would have to be sent to passbook

the point is if you have a boarding pass or coupon or ticket apps can send them all to passbook

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 19 September 2013 19:06 (ten years ago) link

you have to add things to passbook from the apps, which is dumb, but I guess I don't know how else to do it

Euler, Thursday, 19 September 2013 19:06 (ten years ago) link

I think the use case that hardly ever happens is you pull up your ticket to something and it'll stay on the lock screen now, so if you need to hand your phone to someone to scan stuff it's still locked

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 19 September 2013 19:07 (ten years ago) link

I used Passbook for the first time for our flight out of Paris and the attendant had no fucking clue how to process it and kept sternly asking us why we didn't get our boarding passes until I practically forced her to try scanning the QR code shown on the screen

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 19 September 2013 19:08 (ten years ago) link

I was really amused by the fact the Des Moines airport has scanners for QR tickets and they knew how to use them but the San Francisco airport forces paper tickets

this parallax shit seems kinda pointless but generally the layered concept is good

feels like an effect they discovered in the graphics chip and just HAD to use

z-time champion (agent hibachi), Thursday, 19 September 2013 20:27 (ten years ago) link

they really should have just killed the clock part of "clock" and called it timer and everyone would have realized that there's a giant digital clock on the unlock screen and a tiny one at the top of every single home screen

z-time champion (agent hibachi), Thursday, 19 September 2013 20:29 (ten years ago) link

yeah now that you can access the timer through the control panel the clock is p useless

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 September 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link

isn't 'clock' where you can set alarms too?

also great ringtone article. playtime is aces

i only noticed by accident that the icon panel moves as well—it's not only the wallpaper moving. between this and all the zooming/swooshing i actually felt seasick a couple of times yesterday.

Can I just say that I despise the color scheme for the messaging app and I would change that shit in a heartbeat if I could?

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:49 (ten years ago) link

the alarm setting UI is still a bag o' shit. That edit mode stuff is nonsense.

What is with safari on iPad freaking out on the ilxor.com redirect to the servlet sometimes? If it continues I will try to get a packet capture to figure this out

you can turn off the parallax nonsense with a 'reduce motion' thing buried in the accessibility options.

ugh i did not notice the icon grid MOVING until autumn pointed it out

switched off, goodbye parallax

you were so sweet in 16-bit punching games and you make no goddamn sense on a 4" screen that is constantly bouncing around in my hand

z-time champion (agent hibachi), Friday, 20 September 2013 01:30 (ten years ago) link

MH: Safari 6.1 on the Mac does it too. I think it's a bug in their handling of the "0" second redirect on the index.html. I changed it to 1s and it seems to be OK again. You'll need to clear the cache though.

stet, Friday, 20 September 2013 01:32 (ten years ago) link

Set my ipad home screen to white-on-black Kindle text and it looks pretty nice. There's a cool zooming effect when opening a folder like you're going inside the book. Pleased with myself. Did I mention I had a bad day at work and this is how I'm reasserting control in my life.

how on earth did you achieve this

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 20 September 2013 04:03 (ten years ago) link

my iPhone 5S acquisition plans may not be working correctly, I called a cell phone store and they said that if you buy in-store they're actually going to ship you one as they're available

are only the damn apple stores going to have these in store?

Which carrier is this
????

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Friday, 20 September 2013 04:07 (ten years ago) link

ugh

I am wondering if the online ordering with the "pick up at store" option will be enabled. Kind of doubt it, but if so I'll just be a dick by reserving one and going in tomorrow afternoon

If you're talking AT&T they won't do that. I talk to one of their peeps today

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Friday, 20 September 2013 04:09 (ten years ago) link

I guess t-mobile is the main offender of that. Most carriers will have some in stock but they decided to send them to only some stores

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Friday, 20 September 2013 04:10 (ten years ago) link

The reserve thingy only really works for apple but they are also not doing it afaik

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Friday, 20 September 2013 04:10 (ten years ago) link
