乒乓, we need to hide that from public view if that sxsw festival panel about noize actually happens. otherwise, everyone will be coming here to try to appropriate it :(

Wonder if the 5C is turning out to be a dud or not

stet, Friday, 20 September 2013 15:12 (ten years ago) link

for some reason I think the target market for the 5C isn't people who rush to the store or preorder

I'd be interested to hear further feedback from people who've installed iOS7 on their 4 - I'm really tempted to update my wife's iPhone 4 who doesn't care about such things but the prospect of Facetime Audio is appealing.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 20 September 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

i put it on my 4, seems good. there's a little lag in opening up the home screen when you click on the button but a lot of the other processes seem faster. haven't had any bugs or glitches or crashes.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 20 September 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

Seems fine on my 4, too.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:29 (ten years ago) link

I have the final beta on a test 4 and apart from the keyboard sometimes being a bit laggy it seems fine

stet, Friday, 20 September 2013 18:00 (ten years ago) link

at this stage I'm a not too worried about ios7 running ok on my iphone 4, more concerned about apps. apple's prolly done backwards compatibility testing out the wazoo but I doubt all the app makers have.

I've got it on my 4 and have no noticeable slowness or decreased battery life at all, pretty happy with it.

Ordered two new 5ses today, white one for me, black one for the wife. Gazelle says they'll give $115 each for our plain old 4 models which I'm quite fine with unless there are better offers out there?

joygoat, Friday, 20 September 2013 18:56 (ten years ago) link

Anyone put iOS7 on their 4? Not sure whether it's worth doing or not.

In some ways it has improved the basic functions of my phone. For example, the home button actually works correctly now.

polyphonic, Friday, 20 September 2013 19:04 (ten years ago) link

Anyone else experiencing a shorter battery life after updating? I've no stats, but it defo seems the batteries of both my 4S and iPad are draining faster. And that is with airdrop switched off.

What is 'reduce motion' supposed to actually do? Turned it on but can't notice a significant change?

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

Sorry, didn't see battery life was discussed already

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

reduce motion gets rid of the parallax, which is only irritating once you notice it. i guess also you can turn off background updating to improve battery life reputedly (don't recall if that was discussed upthread?)

Saul Goodberg (by Musket and Pup Tent) (s.clover), Friday, 20 September 2013 19:27 (ten years ago) link

At times, say reporting a meeting, I have to use my iPad for some hours at a time. I did notice something like 'seasickness' today switching between apps a lot. Curious to see if switching reduce motion off will cure that, though I'm not noticing anything right now.

Turning background updating off is a good idea. It explains the 'jumps' in battery life my iPad made yesterday and today, because there were 20+ apps in need of an update all of a sudden. It can also screw with your cell phone subscription/deal.

You can tell it to only do automatic downloads over wifi.

Oh i see, thanks

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 20 September 2013 20:19 (ten years ago) link

report from the field - turning on reduce motion, turning off airdrop and turning off bluetooth radically improved battery life on my five - at this point i am at 89% today vs 16% yesterday at the same time coming from a full charge 6 hours ago. tbf i have spent slightly less time fucking with my phone, but still, thats huge.

seeded iTunes radio with some underrated Aerosmith bootlegs and I gotta say this is kicking the ass of all my previous attempts to use Pandora.

Stopped by an Apple store to take a look. Like the new gold color, which only subtly changes the front or side appearance from the white/silver version, but those chamfered edges and the ring around the sapphire home button are polished gold instead of chrome, and the back has a nice appearance too. Space Grey isn't as elegant as the slatelike black on the old 5, but reportedly won't show scratches as much either. The 5C looks and feels like shiny Bakelite, and the softer contours around the back make it more comfortable to hold. But wow is it heavy compared to the 5S - what's up with that?

Was a bit disappointed with the new Apple 5S cases - they're made of anolyne leather so I was expecting a soft touch, not a thin hard case that felt like stiff cardboard.

I'll take a gold 64GB 5S. But on which (US) carrier?

- Verizon is so expensive, $100/month for anything useful (2GB monthly data), and there's still that annoying CDMA limitation of not being able to get online during a voice call (except where there's a wi-fi signal). But their coverage in my parts is excellent, and their LTE coverage the most widespread.
- AT&T will give you 3GB monthly data for $70/mo, though you'll have to pony up for the $90/mo 5GB plan if you want tethering (free texting adds $20/month - WTF? just use iMessage or Whatsapp or just email and forget 20-cent txts except for the handful of remaining dumbphone users).
- T-Mobile offers 2.5GB and tethering for only $60/mo, or unlimited data (albeit throttled if you use too much) for $70/mo, though you'll pay $450 more for an unsubsidized phone. Upside of course is not being tied to a 2-year contract. I *think* the phone is unlocked and the same as the AT&T and maybe Verizon phones. T-Mo doesn't have any LTE footprint to speak of, but their widespread HSPA+ network is almost as speedy.
- Apple didn't have info on Sprint's plan in their stores because they're about to change the terms, but currently it's $80/mo for unlimited, unthrottled data, no tethering, and unlimited voice. Great, except they don't have LTE planned for where I live, and even their announced planned LTE expansion still leaves a smaller footprint than AT&T or Verizon already has. And their 3G is dog-slow. The Sprint handset is a different model than that used by the other three big carriers, and like Verizon uses CDMA for voice, so again, no talking and surfing at the same time.

How much data will I use streaming music about 3 hours a day, with occasional sending or receiving photos, and much more rarely, videos?

Lee626, Saturday, 21 September 2013 01:17 (ten years ago) link

I'm on my parents' Verizon family plan right now and not eligible to upgrade till December I think. If I stay on their plan I'll stay there, but if not I might by a totally-unlocked phone and stick it on Virgin mobile.

Took a look myself tonight. Half of the ones on display had dead batteries, which was a bit Dixons. The 5s is definitely nice, but £700 nice? I can't quite bring myself to do it when the 4s is still so good. What strange disease is this?

stet, Saturday, 21 September 2013 02:51 (ten years ago) link

yeah tbh I am way more itching to buy a retina iPad mini *crosses fingers* than an iPhone 5s. iOS 7 on my 4S seems to have blown out the cobwebs quite a bit.
