why not? you don't use it for reading or anything?

My iPad will remain woefully underused until some jb comes out for either 6.1.3/4 or 7.0. Gonna just be a Netflix machine until then.

Ooh the clock icon is live. That's nice.

And I can't find weather, but that's my problem I guess.

there's a handful of apps the ipad never had; iirc weather is one of them

ipad doesn't support siri now, does it? because installing 7.0 asked me to configure siri, which I did.

akm, Sunday, 22 September 2013 22:10 (ten years ago) link

iPad's supported Siri since 6 iirc

I don't know what color to get. Slate Grey if I get a 5s, white or yellow if I get a C. I have to say, they're pretty strange colors.

naw i stared reading ebooks on my iphone and... I like it, or at least its caused me to read books cause its in the flow of dicking around on my phone

I did sketch out a website on a piece of paper that was supported on the back of my ipad the other day

I've contemplated this. It seems like a frightening step somehow. Like my book reading is still this sanctified thing if I'm doing it on a separate device from my phone. I guess I feel like when reading extended prose on my nook I am less likely to click over every 2 minutes to check other shit...

So I have Notification Center sort set to Manual ... and iMessage above Gmail in the list ... but still seems like it's sorted chronologically (if an email comes in after a text message, the email gets shown on top.) Pitchfork time imo.

I started doing this too because it's a good way to (1) read on the train without having to remember to bring anything and (2) read in bed without bothering the lady and the baby with light

4S screen is just slightly too small to be enjoyable to read on though, so looking forward to eventual upgrade.

is there a twitter client that strips out promoted tweets? i feel like there's been an steady and inexorable encroachment of them, it's getting to me

couldn't take the feeling I was reading a board book of lanark so I never got into reading on the iphone, maybe I should try again on the 5

expect them to get more prevalent once they go public.

Not sure how I feel about the sentences in Notifications. "Tomorrow looks busy. You have 7 events scheduled and the first starts at 9:00 a.m." and the weather in sentences where a strip of icons/temps could fit.

I like the sentences, for now. It's calming.

So the podcasts I subscribe to in iTunes are just totally separate now from the ones I subscribe to in the Podcasts app on my phone? I have to subscribe to everything twice?

eris bueller (lukas), Monday, 23 September 2013 18:40 (ten years ago) link

Podcast subscriptions are supposed to sync via iCloud - and they kinda do. The problem is that Apple is attempting to promote some mysterious "convenient" way to listen to podcasts without actually saying what that way is. Meanwhile, each iTunes/Podcasts app updates makes it worse. Searching support.apple.com on "iTunes podcasts" leads to the cries of the anguished.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 23 September 2013 22:06 (ten years ago) link

guys just stop liking podcasts

mentioned upthread, but the app Downcast solves a lot of this, worth a try

anky, Monday, 23 September 2013 22:58 (ten years ago) link

I know... Probably going to switch everything over to Downcast, but am still baffled at the UI intentions at some of the lower-levels - and not just on podcasts, but everywhere. I have no doubt (I want to believe?) that Apple will sort this out in 7.0.x, 7.x and onward, but despite the overall improvement (I'm using this on an iPhone 4) there are spots that feel unfinished.

if you find securing your iPhone 5S using your fingerprint to be too boring (or fear your fingerprints will somehow fall into the wrong hands), you can instead train it to recognize your nipples. And only yours....

i like pocketcasts they are cool aussies and also the new versions sync across anything if you live in a fractured os environment

the new version is v good though it is now impossible to just wipe out an entry entirely

so it looks like the best plan for USian iPhone users (at least by my lights) is T-Mobile's $30/mo pre-paid plan that gives you unlimited data (speed throttle at 5GB) plus 100 minutes a month. Assuming you can convince all your friends to call you on FaceTime Audio/Skype/whatever.

i too went to college (silby), Friday, 27 September 2013 05:58 (ten years ago) link

I don't know that I've used more than 100 minutes in a month in years. Most contact is via iMessage/text/FB with calls when absolutely necessary.

I finally broke down and went into the store to look at the 5S today; the gold is even more hideous in person.

smang culture (DJP), Friday, 27 September 2013 14:46 (ten years ago) link

did they have any of them in stock at all?

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Friday, 27 September 2013 14:46 (ten years ago) link

Didn't ask, since I wasn't looking to upgrade; just wanted to see what they actually looked like.

The white and silver one is now the best looking one; the grey one looks a little like an abused black phone but is okay and the gold one is laughably ugly.

smang culture (DJP), Friday, 27 September 2013 14:48 (ten years ago) link

Basically, don't buy the gold one unless you dress like Bette Midler in Ruthless People

smang culture (DJP), Friday, 27 September 2013 14:49 (ten years ago) link

What if I dress like Lily Tomlin in Big Business?
