and yeah I don't need to see ads from fucking Taco Bell and American Express or whatever, blocking had no effect.

it is doubleplusannoying that accounts i block keep showing up as follow suggestions

"Bacon lover. Moustache enthusiast. Unicyclist."

i would follow this account

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:54 (ten years ago) link

And most hacks are just opportunist hacks that take any account, not b/c you're anyone important. Not saying you're not important

right. I dunno, I figure if the account was hacked and people were getting spam from me I would've heard about it, but who knows. at any rate I just deactivated it, they have officially reached friendster status in the usefulness dept imho

hey shakey, it's not hacked i don't think. i just went to edit my profile and it said the exact same description. i think it's just randomly generated.

Mordy , Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:06 (ten years ago) link

more like randumbly generated

well whatever, I don't like having random marketing demographics affixed to my identity so they can fuck right off with that shit and advertize their shitty products to someone else

glad i never got twitter, facebook is all the social media idiocracy i need. i look forward to the day it's basically a wasteland and the resulting content 77 posts.

shakey, how are you accessing it? i can't bring up anything like what mordy described in desktop browser or on ios.

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:14 (ten years ago) link

I feel like the amount of ads is pretty reasonable for a website that has no other ads and is free, and the ads are far less eerie and annoying as those I see on Facebook or Amazon or other sites that use your browsing history in a more brazen manner. And I still enjoy the heck out of the site ... I keep finding cool new people to follow.

yeah I use Windows. I'm at work!

I have a strong recollection that after one of the redesigns they tried to get people to add bio to their profile, and I think it had boilerplate info in it that you could replace or delete if you wanted to. Very easy thing to accidentally approve.

polyphonic, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:28 (ten years ago) link

it's just weird that 3 out of the 4 things in that boilerplate are related to my actual life

yes i think emil.y is correct. i don't think it was approved - just a suggestion

Just going from it being greyed out, really. But I checked too, and Mordy has nothing like that written on his page. xp

I wonder if they use the Giants because there are two popular pro sports teams with that name and it boosts their chances of being right (more so than if they used the Cardinals even).

yeah, grey text indicates it's an instruction/suggestion, and i'm not seeing it because i already have a bio

I mainly use my Twitter to make dumb jokes. I would like to keep using it for that purpose but also for some professional networking too. Should I: just use my current Twitter but maybe go through and delete the rare profane joke, delete my current account and just deal with starting over from scratch, or not use Twitter for professional networking?

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:15 (ten years ago) link

I wish I could have multiple accounts under the same email.

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:16 (ten years ago) link

a small trick for that is registering two accounts to a gmail address with one as @gmail.com and one as @googlemail.com.

opie dead eyed piece of shit (Merdeyeux), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:21 (ten years ago) link

Eh it's too much of a pain in the ass to bother with separate accounts. I see there are sites that will automatically delete all your tweets before a certain date. I could do that and then reconfigure with a limited history.

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

not sure what industry youre in but def in journalism and tech it doesnt seem to hurt peoples carers at all to be silly on twitter

Yeah. I'm more concerned about current boss/coworkers finding me and seeing how I spend my workday. Probably just paranoia.

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:32 (ten years ago) link

it's easy enough to use separate accounts with tweetdeck or other apps

anyway i vote 'not use Twitter for professional networking' but i fail at modern life so

mookieproof, Monday, 30 September 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

twitter is i think amazing for networking but i think much like irl more on a genuine interest level than a self consciously working it level, you can find people who are the best at what they do and doing interesting things and talk to them about it cause they love it

lag∞n, Monday, 30 September 2013 17:55 (ten years ago) link

also just like following the writing and thinking of industry people w/o interacting w/them has obvious benifit

if u use gmail, you can sign up as username+whate✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧, username+whatev✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧, etc and they'll all be routed to usern✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧. it used to work on twitter but i haven't tested it lately so ymmv

On Twitter, (and up-thread), I noticed that Mordy's Twitter profile/bio lists the ilxor.com web address. Since I don't currently have a web site or blog, would it be OK with the people of ilxor.com if I added the ilxor.com web address to my Twitter profile/bio for my @AmCuriousNJ Twitter account? I hope I'm not rude asking to do that, I don't mean to be rude. ILX is currently the only place online where I post fairly regularly (aside from Twitter).

As for my experiences with Twitter so far, FWIW: Well, I'm unimpressed with Twitter so far. It might be useful for marketing purposes but it hasn't been helpful for the mainly nonprofit animal organizations that I tweet about. Granted, I've only had my Twitter account since Sept. 19, 2013, but so far I only have 3 accounts following me: Treeship from ILX was kind to follow me (and I follow him back)), an animal organization called YouGiveGoodsAnimals ‏ @YGGLovesAnimals follows me (after I followed the organization), and the account ‏@SolFlareMusic follows me. ‏@SolFlareMusic describes itself on Twitter like this: "Sol Flare ‏ @SolFlareMusic A Melodic Electronica group based in London, with a sound in the vein of Grimes, M83 and Goldfrapp. https://soundcloud.com/solflare";. I'm not sure why this group follows me. I don't follow Sol Flare ‏back (yet). Does anyone know this group's music? Are they any good? Are they worth checking out?

Hot tip: I think my first follower was a vegan condom manufacturer who presumably followed me cos I followed the Vegan Society account. Hope they're enjoying my half-arsed stream of drone music news and Phil Collins jokes.

Does anyone have a general idea how long it usually takes for this kind of situation RE followers to 'kick in'? I mean, since Sept. 19, 2013, I've been following: several animal welfare organizations, one small business that sells vegetarian 'fake meats' (suitably enough, this small business is called FakeMeats) , and one small music distributor (Cobraside, because they have distributed some Jason Falkner in the past, and I like Jason Falkner's music and as far as I can tell, Jason himself isn't currently on Twitter), and I haven't had anyone follow me in reference to these accounts like i'll be your mraz (NickB) did with the vegan condom manufacturer presumably following him because he followed the Vegan Society account. Just for the record: That's not the reason I follow these accounts. I follow these accounts because I'm interested in them. But, I was just wondering about how long this thing usually takes, before you get additional followers like this.

I'm sure nobody here would really care, unless you started posting incredibly offensive stuff, but I am curious myself: why would you want to? It won't lend you any credibility or kudos. Nobody on twitter cares if you have a website.

You are definitely way over-thinking this stuff, but equally you seem like a genuine person just trying to work out an unfamiliar part of technology. I don't use twitter for the same reasons as you seem to have, but my advice would be to continue following people who will be tweeting about similar things to you: search for animal welfare people, follow *lots* of them, engage them in conversation if you have something interesting to say on a topic, retweet them if they say something you think should be shared. If you want followers who aren't already people you know, you have to give them a reason to follow you - it sounds like the animals stuff is what you want to share, the music stuff is more personal? So concentrate on becoming a good resource for people who care about animal rights and welfare.

If that doesn't sound like what you want to use twitter for, then possibly worry less about the number of followers you have, and just enjoy communing with the bits of the twittersphere you do connect with? Speak unto the ether, and relax.

I give Twitter approx 3 more years to age itself into social irrelevance.

I'm sure nobody here would really care, unless you started posting incredibly offensive stuff, but I am curious myself: why would you want to? It won't lend you any credibility or kudos. Nobody on twitter cares if you have a website.

Believe it or not, I thought *maybe* it could help direct a few people over to my Twitter page, in an 'automated' kind of way. I'm not an expert in tech stuff, but what I mean is if a few Twitter accounts 'automatically search' for interesting to look into, *maybe* by adding a web site address, my Twitter account my show up more often on a list of 'suggested' Twitter accounts. Maybe not. But I thought I'd try it if no one at ilxor.com would mind if I listed it in my Twitter profile/bio. I can tell you that having so few followers is quite unpleasant. Makes me think no one pays attention to what I post about the animals. And few people probably do notice what I post about the animals.

For example, from my previous post to now, I gained one new follower: film club @filmclubbristol. That brings my total followers up to 4 currently. I don't know who this account is, or why it follows me, but I noticed that it also follows Jody Beth @jody_beth who I believe posts here on ilxor.com. I have know idea what, if any, the connection might be, but, this gives me the opportunity to look into a bunch of new accounts (via this new follower), and some of these accounts *might* be interested in what I tweet about. I'll still search for animal welfare groups and such but, I would like to have access to as many accounts as I can, in order to find people/accounts that might share some of my interests. Hope I explained that fairly well. So, if listing ilxor.com in my Twitter profile/bio has the chance to bring me a few more followers, I'll try it, as long as the people at ilxor.com don't mind. I don't intend to tweet or post offensive stuff.

Does Jody Beth (or anyone else here) know who/what film club @filmclubbristol is?

Speak unto the ether

Yep. That's what I'm currently doing. Does anyone else think that Twitter actually encourages people to be rude by being set up in such a way that I tweet to someone and he of she can completely ignore my tweet? It's like it's now OK to completely ignore people who are talking to you.

And yeah, I probably am over-thinking this whole Twitter thing but that's because it is incredibly unpleasant having so few followers. It's like I said, no one pays attention to what I tweet regarding the animals. Makes me think "What's the point?" I'm not looking for thousands, or even hundreds, of followers. I'd probably be satisfied with 50 or 60 followers.

I give Twitter approx 3 more years to age itself into social irrelevance.

(I don't mean to sound bitter but): I certainly hope Twitter becomes socially irrelevant. The sooner the better. Let's hope Aimless is absolutely correct!
