Was talking about this during the Emmy's. Noted that Jimmy Kimmel wins for having a writing staff that actually had considerably larger amounts of women then any of the other late night variety shows up for awards.

This is just the first step in Lorne's plan for an accurate representation of global demographics, along with the advent of SNL Mexico (which, yes, is a real thing that's happening and that I wouldn't even be aware of if people I know hadn't auditioned for the cast). I look forward to SNL Laos and SNL Côte d'Ivoire (the improv scene there is off the hook).

“I think there’s lots of parts of America that could care less about ‘Saturday Night Live,’” Becker added. “Lots of African-Americans, lots of gays and lesbians. And Dr Morbius, for sure."

They can keep doing the tipsy ex-porn stars-selling-things commercial sketches forever, and I'll laugh at all of them.
It's no secret I'm a Kate McKinnon stan, but I want to see them develop her smoking ER doctor from the cold open into a proper character.

IAWTC. Both of them, though I doubt they'll ever top "my eye got sucked out by a butt."

I had never heard Arcade Fire before last night, I had no idea they sound like that, it was funny.
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 29 September 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link
i've only heard them a little but this is some new direction right? James Murphy produced disco new wave? With dubbed out 12" style b-side mixes?
― dan selzer, Sunday, 29 September 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link
they don't usually! def a new direction for them

Kenan screaming "NO! YOU GET NO LINES! YOU GOT TO EARN THAT!" was p hilarious
AF mix not only sounded horrible, but was kind of hilarious in that the conga player was apparently playing his ass off, yet no congas could be heard.
― hopping and bopping to the krokodil rot (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 29 September 2013 18:47 (ten years ago) link
Really? I actually took note of how loud the congas were at the beginning of the second song.
― Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Sunday, 29 September 2013 19:05 (ten years ago) link
These are funny, but I also find them really depressing!
― Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Sunday, 29 September 2013 19:06 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, they over-corrected on the second song; one conga was awkwardly louder than the other (and nearly everything else in the mix).

I could barely tell any of the new cast members apart, but I loved all the hazing. Drunk Uncle was better than usual, I thought.
Are The Arcade Fire more of a synthy band now? Maybe now I would actually dig them. I liked the lone new wavey song on their last record, "Sprawl 2."
― Michael F Gill, Sunday, 29 September 2013 19:43 (ten years ago) link
AF worked with James Murphy on the new album, so it's definitely different than they've sounded in the past.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 September 2013 21:00 (ten years ago) link
"Sprawl 2" was prob their high point so far I think (though hearing it at every fucking dance party for 6 months kinda killed it)

Cecily was definitely a bit nervous at the update desk, but I think she will improve. Was Nasim even there last night? Also, I had no idea Andy Samberg just got married to Joanna Newsom.

She was one of the non-English speaking passengers in the airport sketch. That was the only time I saw her all night.

Love Tina's dark humor
GIRLS parody was funny, I thought. Airline boarding sketch was simultaneously hacky and hilarious.
Kyle Mooney is so, so funny in those mumbly YouTube clips. (He's on the new Stephen Merchant HBO show Hello Ladies as well (or at least was in the pilot; and he was pretty funny). His 80s stand-up comedian character wasn't so great, but he has done funny character types before...

I thought the Girls thing was rly weak (lol get it it's a poor person from an impoverished country bein all waky) but the airline boarding thing was one of the more clever things I've seen from SNL in quite a while
― Tetsu: The Inoue Man (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 30 September 2013 12:54 (ten years ago) link
I liked the GIRLS thing pretty much for the impressions - as another McKinnon fan, her Jessa ("I've gotten so bored of orgies") was very funny. And though the main gag was pretty obvious, the execution was pretty good.

I think the point was showing the ridiculousness of a show about the most first-world of first world problems when juxtaposed with an outsized version of poverty
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 September 2013 14:05 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, and I thought the Hannah was good. Some of the mannerisms were uncannily similar.

having never watched Girls, I just sort of assumed that every episode is like this
― smang culture (DJP), Monday, 30 September 2013 14:48 (ten years ago) link
also it kind of seems silly and point-missy to satirize a show that is already kind of deliberately self-satirical
― Tetsu: The Inoue Man (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 30 September 2013 14:57 (ten years ago) link
That's entirely dependent upon whether you think the show's satirical points are useful/interesting/entertaining.

I really want to know how that sketch originated because it's so stupid and simple and killer and effective and hilarious
― smang culture (DJP), Monday, 30 September 2013 15:13 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, totally. Strong and Bayer kill every single time. I could do without the mis-timed entrance bit, mainly because whoever the third person is (usually the guest host) can't do drugged-out deadpan nearly as well as the other two.
― hopping and bopping to the krokodil rot (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 30 September 2013 15:24 (ten years ago) link
That sketch is so good. Bayers creepy smiling is just amazing. Did anyone get what Strong said at the end, where they both say something at the same time? 'Bite to butt' or something.
