Also, I have several semi-technical questions RE Twitter. If anyone provides some answers, thanks in advance.

1.(Brief Re-cap: I've had my Twitter account since Thurs., Sept. 19, 2013. I tweet about animal welfare primarily, but sometimes also tweet about music, arts/culture (vague, I know), and investigative journalism news stories that I think are interesting/important.) Earlier today, someone that I followed decided to block me. My question is: Is this unusual? I thought blocking was done to spam accounts and/or accounts with offensive material, neither of which I engage in with Twitter or otherwise.

2.If I wish to use a #hashtag that doesn't already exist, how do I create it? Is it just a matter of keying it in on my notebook computer? I know that there's a #hashtag for almost everything but, just in case.

3.When using the DM (Direct Message) feature, is the character limit also 140? Obviously, I haven't used DM yet. I just want to get an idea what to expect when I do.

One other question about #hashtags: Does anyone know if you can use symbols (aside from #) in hastags? Symbols like: $, >, %. Might seem like an odd question but I'm just tryin' to learn this 'Twitter thing'.

Fortunately, I don't have to use Twitter for work. Not yet, at least. But, I do know the feeling of wishing Twitter would die. And I can definitely understand the desire to delete the Twitter account.

If that's meant for me: I'm not trying to engage with that person on Twitter. That actually refers to a different matter, having to do with a magazine I subscribe to. Their customer service absolutely sucks! And there's apparently something very, very wrong with their email. Approx. 75% (no exaggeration) of the emails to and from that magazine 'disappear' somewhere, (into spam folder? hacked?) both ways: to and from the magazine: the email *truly fails* to get to the intended recipient 75% of the time. You have a choice: Either have the emails go completely unacknowledged or advise the intended recipient to check his/her email. What would you do? Also, two more points: These people (at the magazine) *refuse* to acknowledge that there's any problem with their email (the problem isn't on my end: I've done several 'test-runs' with other email recipients, and there's no problem on my end), and these people solicit email communication. So, if they're soliciting this stuff, and they refuse to check what they're soliciting, what would do? Advising him to check his email isn't my attempt to get him to follow me on Twitter, it's advice to him that his company's email 'system/software' (or whatever the technical term is) is fucked-up and if he wants the email he solicits, he should check his email. Hope that explains that.

Oh, and he's a snippet from an email (one of the few emails that actually got to the intended recipient at that magazine) that the customer service rep/editorial assistant (Christopher) sent to me instructing me to tweet to the intended email recipient (Mark) in order to keep on top of the situation (maybe Christopher is beginning to realize there's something wrong with the company email), (from the email exchange, Christopher to me): "Tweeting is always an effective strategy. Unfortunately I'm no longer in HQ on a regular basis (back in NJ for a while for various family reasons) but I will tell mark to keep an eye out for your email." (Christopher is the one who neglected to capitalize Mark's name in that passage, not me.) So, you see, you're encouraged to tweet to these people in order to make sure he/she actually gets the email. That should explain the matter, I think.

This thread is now the antithesis of twitter.

My Twitter account was set up partly for professional purposes, in that I and some of my co-workers were encouraged to be active on Twitter, I identify my occupation in my bio, I sometimes (but by no means exclusively) tweet about work stuff, etc. So we have a little committee at work that meets semi-regularly to discuss strategies for social media, and early on we realized that the best way to gain Twitter followers was just to follow a ton of people. While I did want to gain followers, I didn't care *so much* about it that I was willing to indiscriminately follow a bunch of random people. (I figured it would just clog up my feed.) But my coworkers who did so -- those who started following 1,000+ right away -- managed to pick up at least a few hundred followers fairly quickly.

Regarding the title of this thread, I conclude that Twitter is a resounding Dud.

And about buying Twitter followers, I’m not planning on doing so but, I must say, all this phony outrage I constantly see on the internet about buying Twitter followers would be amusing if not so sickening. Twitter was designed to be superficial, and buying Twitter followers fits into such a superficial paradigm perfectly. Buying Twitter followers is a perfect fit for the essence of Twitter. Anyone who thinks that Twitter is meant to enable you to ‘cultivate’ worthwhile and lasting ‘relationships’ in 140 characters or less, probably has something very wrong with them. Relationships (with some psychological depth to them) are not ‘cultivated’ by engaging in deep mollification that’s limited to 140 characters. It would not surprise me one bit if the ‘head honchos’ at Twitter were the ones paying for all these ‘don’t buy Twitter followers’ articles to be published and prominently displayed on the internet. Big business/corporations don’t have to pay for followers; all they have to do is intimidate their employees (with not-so-subtle threats of unemployment) if the employees don’t follow whomever the business wants them to on Twitter. Twitter deems such immoral intimidation and abuse of employees as ‘ethical social marketing’, but when the ‘little guy’ tries to purchase some advertising/Twitter followers/PR at reasonable prices for posting on Twitter, the practice suddenly becomes ‘gaming the system’. And keep in mind: Sometimes the ‘little guy’ is a former (intimidated and abused) employee of one of these corporations, trying to strike out on his or her own. Yup, I’m pretty sure Twitter is paying for the advertising (in the guise of fake tech/news articles) condemning the little guy for buying (OMG! In a capitalist society no less!) Twitter followers.

It's just communication - if you're not enjoying it then block / unfollow / choose better whose blather to read. I like it because it's inessential blather. It's a good place to stick dull/unimportant background stuff with friends and suchlike. Start again with a new account or something. Approach in a different way.
