ohhh i didn't realize that guy was Norm MacDonald's "nephew Kyle" on his short-lived Comedy Central show, those bits were funny.

they've been meta as hell in the past obv. smigel was on the bs report a week or so ago, he had original cast best cast, will ferrell best cast member though he said that bill murray is the funniest man he's ever met; anyway apparently he wrote the season ending sketch for the first lorne year back (the anthony michael hall year) that had the studio burn down and lorne only saving lovitz from the fire. real difference in tone from this happy cuddly tone they've had the past couple of years w/ the kristen and samberg and then the hader and armisen goodbyes and then this week where you had all the new cast stuff and the hey everybody cecily's working weekend update yay cecily stuff.
― balls, Thursday, 3 October 2013 04:52 (ten years ago) link
yeah it seemed weirdly myopic, acting as if most people who watch SNL are hanging on the edge of every splitsider blog post about who got hired to replace the departing cast members
that said i thought the "new cast member or arcade fire" sketch was really funny though mostly because of kenan
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 October 2013 04:54 (ten years ago) link
also kind of a bad look how they still try and shoehorn in references to things they couldn't make fun of this year because they weren't on the air (blurred lines etc)

It's tough to be a Canadian in your thirties and not into Arcade Fire in Toronto at least
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 3 October 2013 05:02 (ten years ago) link
new cast member or arcade fire was amusing enough on it's own (and jesus christ at the realization that they have been on there four times now and lorne plausibly should know what they look like and who they are) but kenan really made it a great sketch. usually w/ dudes that hang around forever i'm like 'good lord move on, get another job already' - thought it about nealon, thought it about hammond who was actually useful, thought it about armisen even though he was a big part of alot of my fave sketches even in his last season (this from i think miley's last hosting gig never got enough credit imo - http://videos.sapo.pt/f2WqzOK041KtHFzFuDzI), but w/ kenan i'm not remotely tired of him.

i don't mind AF and was kind of stoked to see they were going in a glammy disco direction now but the sound on both songs really supports Whiney's "SNL mixes bands terribly on purpose" conspiracy theory

There's a long-standing IATSE-protected guy who mixes all the live music on SNL. His job is union-protected, it is not a conspiracy
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 3 October 2013 13:46 (ten years ago) link
a conspiracy of one

is Jim Downey union-protected so all the right-wing political sketches can go on?
― eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 October 2013 14:05 (ten years ago) link
Does SNL's studio not have automated digital mixers with memory settings? "Typical bad SNL musical guest sound" made a lot more sense when technology wasn't up to the task.

i'm not very fluent in stagehand union laws/regs but i'm more fluent than most and iirc you can remove an iatse tech from a job as long as you replace them with a another iastse tech of equal or greater seniority

I don't know what the thing is, I just know it's always the same guy and he's been there a while. I am far happier knowing that NBC stage-hands have their jobs protected despite public opinion about what constitutes a "bad mix". I mean, on one hand, I've never actually seen any game-changingly bad performances on the show, I've always thought it's been pretty good. If I'm sitting there thinking "I am hearing a new Kanye song for the first time and it is live" then I'm not thinking about the mix. On the other hand, taken objectively, I can't think of any live-in-studio TV performances that have been well-mixed, like, ever. All the performances-I-thought-were-great on SNL I saw as a kid ("Doll Parts", "Caught A Lite Sneeze", "Red Light Special") are actually really badly mixed on second viewing
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 3 October 2013 14:27 (ten years ago) link
I felt the same when I heard "Radio Radio"
― eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 October 2013 14:29 (ten years ago) link
sometimes a bad mix is a benefit; my first exposure to 10,000 Maniacs was their SNL appearance and I thought they were a much different-sounding band due to how ragged the mix made them sound, to the point where when I finally heard In My Tribe my first reaction was "I had no idea this was an easy listening band"
― smang culture (DJP), Thursday, 3 October 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link
i'm not going to post a million youtubes but IMO bands always sound better on letterman than SNL, and that guy is mixing 5 times as many bands a week

though tbf in AF's case there are probably 48 channels of audio so the in-house guy is probably just thinking "fuuuuuck yoooooou"
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 3 October 2013 14:36 (ten years ago) link
The SNL house band's mix sounds ok. Maybe dude pays attention if you put a sax solo in your song.
