lol I would love it if Katy Perry hosted and Bruno came out and played his version of "Respect Yourself" twice.

"mornin' miami" was definitely by and far the best of the night, although of course it was the one that came on right after i went to bed, so i just now watched it online

I passed out after Morning Miami so that's good to know

Bitch Fantastic (DJP), Sunday, 6 October 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

it is 'interesting' that Bruce is hosting for the first time just now with nothing to plug, especially since he makes like 3-5 movies a year, they should be able to just wait a few months to catch him on a promotional cycle.

i passed out after seeing that i had typed "by and far"

willis hosted way back in the 80s, was a pretty great host, did one of the first wayne's worlds. always wondered why he hadn't been back, figured he just wasn't interested.

Isn't Red 2 out soon? I saw a preview for it recently.

Immediate Follower (NA), Sunday, 6 October 2013 18:04 (ten years ago) link

Red 2 came and went three months ago. the next sequel in his queue, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, is ten months away.

marky markers & the blinky bunch (some dude), Sunday, 6 October 2013 18:11 (ten years ago) link

Oh weird I swear I saw a preview for it a month ago.

Immediate Follower (NA), Sunday, 6 October 2013 18:24 (ten years ago) link

it was originally supposed to come out in october but they pushed it back to april

da croupier, Sunday, 6 October 2013 19:47 (ten years ago) link

Red 2 was bad? I didn't even see Red until this year, and liked it, so hearing that is a drag.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 6 October 2013 20:56 (ten years ago) link

first one was fun - sequel is the opposite of fun

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 6 October 2013 21:04 (ten years ago) link

the more i think about it, the more irritating it is that they did a pretty decent parody of Miley's video about the gov't shutdown, AND THEN felt the need to do a cold open that shoehorned Miley at the VMAs and the shutdown into the same labored premise.

Jay's Shannon Sharpe impression on Weekend Update KILLED me

I loved his Will Smith because it was more like he was doing an impression of his Fresh Prince of Bel Air persona

Before this ep I was just kinda like "eh Miley whatever" and then by the end of it I was like "oh hey I think I rly like this girl a lot"

For a young dumb 20 year old she is a little more intelligent and self aware and willfully self-mocking than most other young dumb 20 year olds!

katy perry lookin good, especially in contrast to her backing band

Weekend Update seemed abnormally hilarious to me tonight. Go figure. McDonald's drive-thru joke was the. best.

cecily's killin' it

some dude, Sunday, 13 October 2013 11:06 (ten years ago) link

A lot of the sketches this season seem shorter than usual. Given that one the most frequent and longstanding criticisms of the show is that sketches drag on too long, beat a joke into the ground, etc., that's not necessarily a bad thing. But some of them also seem underdeveloped and end sort of arbitrarily.

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Sunday, 13 October 2013 13:52 (ten years ago) link

I could be wrong about the length, btw. The actual number of sketches seems to be in line with last season, though with 12 (including cold open, monologue, and Weekend Update), last night's episode was at the upper end.

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Sunday, 13 October 2013 14:47 (ten years ago) link

You counted?

smangerz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 13 October 2013 14:53 (ten years ago) link

Counted last night's via Hulu; counted the previous 15 episodes via that SNL Transcripts site.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 13 October 2013 15:27 (ten years ago) link

the centaur sketch being really short was its saving grace. in 2002 that thing would've been 15 minutes.

some dude, Sunday, 13 October 2013 15:37 (ten years ago) link

although i kinda don't wanna see any centaur-themed SNL sketch that doesn't involve Walken and Parnell

some dude, Sunday, 13 October 2013 15:38 (ten years ago) link

harmonica was so sad.

what non-celeb impression running characters/sketches do they have at this point from the returning cast? Moynihan's got Drunk Uncle/secondhand news guy and I guess last night was the first time the "i miss my little kitty cat" guy got a new sketch since the first, he and Cecily have the obnoxious McDonald's duo, there's the ex-porn stars...I can't think of anything Kenan's got assuming they won't do 'What Up With That' without Hader/Sudeikis. feel like this could be a nice relatively non-repetitive season as long as they don't run that handful of characters totally into the ground.

some dude, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link

I hope Jean K Jean lives on. ZUT ALORS!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:15 (ten years ago) link

kenan's kinda dominating this thing now. mooney's established his little corner already, wouldn't mind if they stopped trying to recreate samberg and let his more adam mckay type shorts just be the digital shorts now (audience reaction to 'boy dance party' suggests no way is lorne gonna stop any look at these silly dances shorts any time soon). him, at&t guy, and noel wells the only new ppl to have made much of an impression on me so far, in the sense of establishing themselves and looking like they're gonna hang around. the sketch w/ the seals and willis as some guy who fantasizes himself as some bruce willis character is the only live sketch i can recall really liking the next day.

balls, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

and man during that boy dance party thing every time they showed willis all i could keep thinking was how long has it been since i went to six flags.

balls, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link

I liked the Gravity/shutdown cold open sketch. Lady Gaga Talk Show was probably my least favorite, mainly because I don't know if that was a good Michael Kors impression or not.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:27 (ten years ago) link

making fun of Gaga five minutes before Katy Perry's performance just seemed like some kind of weird dog whistle to rile up their respective twitter stans

some dude, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

It was not a good Michael Kors impression. As somebody who's probably seen way more seasons of Project Runway than I should have, it seemed like an impression that Willis came up with from being shown a single 5 minute clip and extrapolating from that. There was a bit of similarity, but mostly no good.
