I have 4 rolls of scotch tape in my house. The instances of scarcity and having to use strips of envelopes led me to frequently wonder if I had tape while I was at or near a store. I have so much tape.

Armchair logistics-splaining reminds me of my boss who can't fathom production of subpoenaed documents (from, e.g., Blue Cross/Blue Shield or the a mega-bank like Citi) taking 2 weeks to accomplish. "All they have to do type [Name] into the computer, print out what they find, and FedEx it to us. Tell them I want them by the day after tomorrow."

posting to the wrong thread?

I don't know. Probably. If this website worked right it could redirect to the right thread based on what I'd recently read and the content of my posts.

Just as a FYI to the other devs out there, if you d/l the current Mavericks GM from the App store you'll get 13A603. Installs right over the previous GM. I suppose I'm surfing on the real Mavericks now.

New new new Lust Objects at announcement later today. This might be when I finally pull the trigger on an iPad, especially if it's a retina iPad Mini.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 08:49 (ten years ago) link

Man I just bought an ipad mini yesterday, that was pretty dumb

badg, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 14:43 (ten years ago) link

throw it in the ocean

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 14:46 (ten years ago) link

you've made a terrible mistake.

Nhex, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 15:18 (ten years ago) link

Still haven't upgraded. I decided "my phone takes awesome photos and video, tells me the weather, gets my e-mail, gives me perfect directions, gives me up-to-date real estate listings, has games, can pull any music out of the air that I want to listen to, etc. I don't need a 'better' phone right now." That said, it kind of bothers me that my plan cost includes 2/3 of the cost of a phone that I'm not getting.

what's your phone? Well in most cases, (planned?) obsolescence will make even the most basic of functions unusable after 2-3 years

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 15:26 (ten years ago) link

Get new phone, resell it, keep using current phone

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 15:33 (ten years ago) link

dude hurting if you are eligible for a new phone get it and sell it at the very least , youre paying for it

lol xp

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link

i don't get it - you're on contract that subsidizes a phone you don't have? usually you can't upgrade until you contract is over or almost over?

Nhex, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 15:37 (ten years ago) link

his contract is up, but he's still paying the same monthly rate and not getting a new phone

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 15:51 (ten years ago) link

what's the market for locked iphones? jailbreakers?

乒乓, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 15:54 (ten years ago) link

fwiw apparently verizon's aren't locked, either. for direct sale, the market is generally other people on the same carrier. for trade-in, most sites still resell them locked, but I have the suspicion that others are unlocking phones using Apple's carrier tools.

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:00 (ten years ago) link

i know that last year's verizons were unlocked w/r/t 3G cap but i didn't know that this year's model is unlocked full stop

乒乓, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:02 (ten years ago) link

yeah, apparently it's the case, or so my friend and his meticulous browsing of messageboards has surmised

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:13 (ten years ago) link

you buy a verizon iphone on a contract and it's sim unlocked worldwide out of the box?

caek, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link

That is what my friend has told me. I am skeptical.

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:31 (ten years ago) link

yeah p sure u can just goto a foreign land and throw a sim in there

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:31 (ten years ago) link

I mean, carrier-locking makes sense for non-contract phones if there's some sort of subsidy on the purchase price, or back when iPhones were exclusive to certain carriers it definitely made sense, but... they're getting their money via the contract, so I have no idea why carrier locking is necessary.

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

theyre instinctively regressive barbarians

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

very true

mh, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:39 (ten years ago) link

I have gone to foreign lands with my verizon IPHONE 5 and thrown in sim cards from local carriers and had voice + data. guessing the same is true for 5s.

what I'm not 100% sure about is whether, if I cancel my verizon account, I can still throw in a foreign sim & have it work. guessing yes? but don't know. (may be relevant to my interests soon)

Euler, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:43 (ten years ago) link

for those keeping score, i am now with airvoice. got no tmobile reception in my apartment, in subway stations, in times square, etc. net10 was fine but you literally could not text an overseas number, which is fine until you have visitors. they will not let you pay them to do this. now with airvoice, who seem fine so far. $40/month for 1GB + unlimited + 100 intl texts.

caek, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:47 (ten years ago) link

hoping to order a retina ipad mini today

caek, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah verizon iphones are all global unlocked starting with the 5

if you're unsure just call them up, if you tell them you're going out of country and would like it unlocked they can verify for you

a hard dom is good to find (Edward III), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

i'm gonna be a pedant and say that verizon iphone 5's were unlocked on 3G frequencies only, i think you still had to get them unlocked for LTE (and since verizon's LTE is the one most commonly used in other countries, verizon was the phone to get). would be great if verizon really did unlock the LTE bands too

i'm sort of mad because the unlocked iphone that apple sold last year ended up being the AT&T model, which means that it's useless for LTE in p much every country except the US

乒乓, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:58 (ten years ago) link

yeah I only used my 5 on 3g this summer in france & spain; france barely has LTE at this point so whatever, and their 3g seemed less shitty than what I'm used to here (though maybe that was the txakoli talking)

Euler, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link

yeah my impression is that 3g in much of europe is faster than whatever at&t are calling "4g" here

caek, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link

3g in london is certainly much faster than anything i've ever gotten in nyc

caek, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 17:02 (ten years ago) link

re: verizon and int'l unlock

MY UNDERSTANDING is that phones bought from verizon on contract need to be unlocked for use internationally (i.e. w/ new sim cards—you can use them in foreign countries on your american sim card if you are a russian plutocrat or a walton). but the unlock process is extremely easy: you just need to be a customer "in good standing" i.e. no outstanding bills and have been w/ verizon for at least 6 months, and you can call and ask them to unlock for you.

MY EXPERIENCE is that before i went to iceland in may i called and the verizon guy was like "oh i dont need to unlock this for you its already unlocked!" and then i WENT to iceland and of course the phone WAS NOT unlocked, and did not work with my new icelandic sim, and i needed to put my american sim in, spend $10 to call verizon in the US and have them unlock it, and then it did work.

(this was all with a 4S.)

when i bought my new 5S verizon sent it to me already unlocked for use internationally. when i tried to do the same w/ my girlfriends phone, which we had never used internationally and never unlocked, the site wouldnt let me--i was told you need to call verizon to have that phone number unlocked for intl use

max, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 17:18 (ten years ago) link

i think you need go to iceland again w/ your 5s, just to confirm

乒乓, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

yes please do, that post was quite confusing

caek, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

buy your phone from verizon and then call them and double-confirm that the phone is unlocked to use internationally, is what im saying

max, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

there's some software rental thing coming here, i feel it my waters
