Counted last night's via Hulu; counted the previous 15 episodes via that SNL Transcripts site.

the centaur sketch being really short was its saving grace. in 2002 that thing would've been 15 minutes.
― some dude, Sunday, 13 October 2013 15:37 (ten years ago) link
although i kinda don't wanna see any centaur-themed SNL sketch that doesn't involve Walken and Parnell

harmonica was so sad.

at least they're not doing weekly Mr Pepper esque sketches these days

what non-celeb impression running characters/sketches do they have at this point from the returning cast? Moynihan's got Drunk Uncle/secondhand news guy and I guess last night was the first time the "i miss my little kitty cat" guy got a new sketch since the first, he and Cecily have the obnoxious McDonald's duo, there's the ex-porn stars...I can't think of anything Kenan's got assuming they won't do 'What Up With That' without Hader/Sudeikis. feel like this could be a nice relatively non-repetitive season as long as they don't run that handful of characters totally into the ground.
― some dude, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link
I hope Jean K Jean lives on. ZUT ALORS!
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:15 (ten years ago) link
kenan's kinda dominating this thing now. mooney's established his little corner already, wouldn't mind if they stopped trying to recreate samberg and let his more adam mckay type shorts just be the digital shorts now (audience reaction to 'boy dance party' suggests no way is lorne gonna stop any look at these silly dances shorts any time soon). him, at&t guy, and noel wells the only new ppl to have made much of an impression on me so far, in the sense of establishing themselves and looking like they're gonna hang around. the sketch w/ the seals and willis as some guy who fantasizes himself as some bruce willis character is the only live sketch i can recall really liking the next day.
― balls, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link
and man during that boy dance party thing every time they showed willis all i could keep thinking was how long has it been since i went to six flags.

I liked the Gravity/shutdown cold open sketch. Lady Gaga Talk Show was probably my least favorite, mainly because I don't know if that was a good Michael Kors impression or not.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:27 (ten years ago) link
making fun of Gaga five minutes before Katy Perry's performance just seemed like some kind of weird dog whistle to rile up their respective twitter stans
― some dude, Sunday, 13 October 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link
It was not a good Michael Kors impression. As somebody who's probably seen way more seasons of Project Runway than I should have, it seemed like an impression that Willis came up with from being shown a single 5 minute clip and extrapolating from that. There was a bit of similarity, but mostly no good.

this ep wasnt great but was easily like 80 times better than mileys
Cosign. I feel like that one's for the writers or something, it's great but the audience never seems to care.

Also Taran's jerky old brother character, right?

i like what a batshit trio of hosts Tina Fey, Miley Cyrus and Bruce Willis make to start the season with, though
― some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 02:11 (ten years ago) link
Edward Norton is up next, but I already forgot who the musical guest is.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 October 2013 02:13 (ten years ago) link
so Fey and Willis had no current movie to promote, and neither does Norton...isn't that kinda weird?
― some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 02:20 (ten years ago) link
Musical guest is Janelle Monae
― Popture, Monday, 14 October 2013 07:24 (ten years ago) link
This episode ran really, really short - like, maybe nearly 10 minutes. In addition to a couple of extended ad-break vamps with the band and the SNL title card, they re-ran the e-Meth commercial from episode 1!
― Walter Galt, Monday, 14 October 2013 12:45 (ten years ago) link
Did they cut the naked methhead in Kenan's house bit of that this time?
― ΙΧΘΥΣ blindness (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 14 October 2013 13:38 (ten years ago) link
nope, it was still there. why would they cut it?
― some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link
I thought maybe my perception that Miley's episode was way better than Bruce's was because I watched them in different formats (Hulu vs. live TV), but I just A-B'd the list of sketches, and nope: Miley's ep just had more sketches that worked for me, and as a host, she brought more to the show.

It seemed like Bruce struggled with a lot of the cue cards - the Armageddon sketch, the Seal Team 6 sketch. It sounded like he kept mumbling through a lot of the lines.
re: that harmonica intro - wouldn't the (admittedly feeble) joke have worked better if they gave Moynihan a harmonica that *wasn't* in the correct key? His playing didn't suck enough for the joke to really work!
― Walter Galt, Monday, 14 October 2013 14:10 (ten years ago) link
Ha, yeah, I thought the same thing about the harmonica bit.
― Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:15 (ten years ago) link
either that or bruce willis just isn't that impressive
― Untt (La Lechera), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:24 (ten years ago) link
I must've just missed it or something. I thought it would be weird if they did.

His playing didn't suck enough for the joke to really work!
Haha, my gf (whose least-favorite instrument is the harmonica) said as we watched this, "I can't tell any difference between what they're doing."
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:32 (ten years ago) link
I would be perfectly happy to never see Taran Killam's annoying 30-something guy who still lives with his mom sketch ever appear again.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link
the barbershop sketch was lousy. although it was almost worth it for Kenan's terrible fake barber-ing where the comb wasn't even close to dude's hair.
― Neanderthal, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:32 (ten years ago) link
yeah i like Killam generally but that sketch can gtfo (xp)
― some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link
the 24 hour energy drink thing was laughs of pain (dated too many actresses)
― Neanderthal, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link
I liked the Kenan-Jay banter in the barbershop sketch, but Bruce dragged the energy down, and it didn't really go anywhere?
This was good, though it was a little too "ladies be crazy." My wife said she'd have preferred to have seen "24 hour energy for dating comedians" -- the tag at the end -- as the whole commercial.
Actually, the one sketch I really liked was the beer-pong one!
― Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Monday, 14 October 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link
the fact that everyone in the sketch was an actress/actor AND a comedian made it funnier/less problematic imo
― some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:44 (ten years ago) link
beer pong definitely showing Good Neighbor getting to do their thing. Reminded me of their viral "toast" bit in ways.
― dan selzer, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:51 (ten years ago) link
oh yeah i loved that. been watching a lot of Kyle Mooney youtubes lately.
― some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link
bruce's harmonica playing was downright embarrassing. too many sketches for him were just 'tough guy movie but something is goofy' by-the-numbers.
