Did they cut the naked methhead in Kenan's house bit of that this time?

ΙΧΘΥΣ blindness (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 14 October 2013 13:38 (ten years ago) link

nope, it was still there. why would they cut it?

some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link

I thought maybe my perception that Miley's episode was way better than Bruce's was because I watched them in different formats (Hulu vs. live TV), but I just A-B'd the list of sketches, and nope: Miley's ep just had more sketches that worked for me, and as a host, she brought more to the show.

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Monday, 14 October 2013 13:57 (ten years ago) link

It seemed like Bruce struggled with a lot of the cue cards - the Armageddon sketch, the Seal Team 6 sketch. It sounded like he kept mumbling through a lot of the lines.

re: that harmonica intro - wouldn't the (admittedly feeble) joke have worked better if they gave Moynihan a harmonica that *wasn't* in the correct key? His playing didn't suck enough for the joke to really work!

Walter Galt, Monday, 14 October 2013 14:10 (ten years ago) link

Ha, yeah, I thought the same thing about the harmonica bit.

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:15 (ten years ago) link

either that or bruce willis just isn't that impressive

Untt (La Lechera), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:24 (ten years ago) link

I must've just missed it or something. I thought it would be weird if they did.

ΙΧΘΥΣ blindness (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:31 (ten years ago) link

Haha, my gf (whose least-favorite instrument is the harmonica) said as we watched this, "I can't tell any difference between what they're doing."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:32 (ten years ago) link

I would be perfectly happy to never see Taran Killam's annoying 30-something guy who still lives with his mom sketch ever appear again.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link

the barbershop sketch was lousy. although it was almost worth it for Kenan's terrible fake barber-ing where the comb wasn't even close to dude's hair.

Neanderthal, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:32 (ten years ago) link

yeah i like Killam generally but that sketch can gtfo (xp)

some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

the 24 hour energy drink thing was laughs of pain (dated too many actresses)

Neanderthal, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

I liked the Kenan-Jay banter in the barbershop sketch, but Bruce dragged the energy down, and it didn't really go anywhere?

the 24 hour energy drink thing was laughs of pain (dated too many actresses)

This was good, though it was a little too "ladies be crazy." My wife said she'd have preferred to have seen "24 hour energy for dating comedians" -- the tag at the end -- as the whole commercial.

Actually, the one sketch I really liked was the beer-pong one!

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Monday, 14 October 2013 16:42 (ten years ago) link

the fact that everyone in the sketch was an actress/actor AND a comedian made it funnier/less problematic imo

some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:44 (ten years ago) link

beer pong definitely showing Good Neighbor getting to do their thing. Reminded me of their viral "toast" bit in ways.

dan selzer, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:51 (ten years ago) link

oh yeah i loved that. been watching a lot of Kyle Mooney youtubes lately.

some dude, Monday, 14 October 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link

bruce's harmonica playing was downright embarrassing. too many sketches for him were just 'tough guy movie but something is goofy' by-the-numbers.

November 2: Kerry Washington/Eminem

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 15:44 (ten years ago) link

Ooh, that's exciting. Kerry Washington, that is.

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 15:46 (ten years ago) link

this wes anderson bit is very lol

Mordy , Sunday, 27 October 2013 03:58 (ten years ago) link

cute. Norton as Owen W p good.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 27 October 2013 19:03 (ten years ago) link

Not as good as Tom Hiddleston doing Owen Wilson as Loki but still pretty funny.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 27 October 2013 19:24 (ten years ago) link

almost every other sketch dragged on like 3x too long tho.

except the pest control sketch had some great lines. 'a leader of just a respected citizen'

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Sunday, 27 October 2013 20:05 (ten years ago) link

or, not of.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Sunday, 27 October 2013 20:06 (ten years ago) link

actually no the proper line is this: "I can’t tell if he was a leader or just a charismatic citizen"

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Sunday, 27 October 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

Pest control sketch was the best of the night, though I'm not sure the people in the office were really necessary. Could've just been a two person sketch.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 27 October 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link

This might have been the worst episode in a couple of years. Wes Anderson thing was cute, I guess, but I didn't find anything to like in the rest of it. Really brutal.

Walter Galt, Sunday, 27 October 2013 21:14 (ten years ago) link

6 Tuesdays on every Tuesday. This is called dumpy pants. (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 27 October 2013 21:19 (ten years ago) link

Every sketch felt like a ten-minutes-to-1:00am half-assed throwaway.

guy whose misinformed abt the news is classic & steve harvey was good, couldve been better

also i def liked the virgin waitstaff 1

johnny crunch, Sunday, 27 October 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

or hoos

johnny crunch, Sunday, 27 October 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

didn't watch 12 days not a slave, got an immediate 'this will be bad and long' vibe off it. enjoyed virgin waitstaff and probably laughed most at the last sketch which could've been unwatchable but norton really sold it. thought he was a pretty great host w/ some pretty weak material, hope he hosts again. janelle monae was pretty great i thought, not sure i quite realized how 1) beautiful and 2) tiny she is.

balls, Sunday, 27 October 2013 22:25 (ten years ago) link

Ed Norton episode was weird; almost every skit started out terrible and then had me cracking up halfway through while still thinking "this is pretty bad"

Faves were the pest control and stranger danger sketches, biggest laugh was "don't dance! they'll try to imitate you!" from 12 Days Not A Slave

Best done was the Wes Anderson sketch. Tilda Swinton was A+

stranger danger killed me, one of those increasingly rare opportunities for Nasim Pedrad to shine

some dude, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 14:37 (ten years ago) link

read a passing rumor that she's working on a pilot, which explains some of her decreased presence on the show

a dessicated quasi-tsunami of gut-busting cosmic - tech (DJP), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 14:46 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, been missing her the last few episodes, and arguing with my girlfriend who doesn't like her. I think she stole this episode and I can't get "I'm gonna get some candy" or whatever out of my head.

Def a weird episode. I have a theory that sometimes when they make a really super elaborate digital short that the skits suffer. How much time/energy was spent on that Wes Anderson thing? I didn't hate the episode though. I liked 12 Days Not a Slave, esp Kate Mckinnon's face.

And the Ed Norton sitting in a chair halloween skit was so weird and low budget but oddly funny to me.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 14:51 (ten years ago) link

she worked on the mulaney pilot (costarred maybe?) which was apparently great but nbc passed on it cuz i guess it seemed too much like a 'good nbc sitcom' which is precisely what nbc isn't in the market for anymore. fox however is so they've picked it up but apparently nbc won't let nasim out of her contract w/ snl. she feels underused this season but that seems the case almost w/ every cast member (eg killiam seemed barely on it last week) somehow, the only one who seems to get consistent work in every episode is mackinnon which makes sense since she's yknow by far the most talented current cast member. anyone want to make predictions on which of the new cast members are regular cast still w/ the show in two years? i'm guessing wells, mooney, bennett, and o'brien, w/ decreasing certainty there.

balls, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:00 (ten years ago) link

I agree on three of those, torn on O'Brien. He's gotten on the show a good amount so far, but I'm not sure anyone likes that.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:02 (ten years ago) link

The two other guys, whose names I don't know, are basically indistinguishable from each other and will probably disappear.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:03 (ten years ago) link

i literally listed o'brien purely on the basis of him cracking me up w/ every 'son' in that virgin waitstaff sketch.

balls, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:09 (ten years ago) link

i thought he killed it on that waitstaff sketch and i finally found a reason to root for him.

JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:22 (ten years ago) link

Oh wait, I forgot Brooks Whelan is one of the guys I couldn't picture. I think it's Beck Bennett and John Milsner (?) who are the same guy twice and SNL only needs one of them.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:25 (ten years ago) link

brooks whelan is a bro, did the pest control sketch which if that takes off could be a vote in his favor (i thought it was ok but thought it was norton who sold it). milsner's the little guy, hasn't made an impression on me yet. bennett's the at&t guy, reminds me of sudeikis for reasons i can not justify so far.

balls, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:28 (ten years ago) link

One of my LA standup friends is pals with Whelan and she says he's great. I'll take her word for it, because the only things I recall him doing are the pest control sketch and that bit about his tattoos on Update.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:34 (ten years ago) link

I have no idea how anyone can tell these FIVE new white guys apart.

There's Kyle Mooney with the puffy hair
The dude who looks like Eric Copeland from Black Dice
And then three other white guys ????

obie stompin' moby (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 22:54 (ten years ago) link

I had to gis Eric Copeland, but I'm guessing that's O'Brien. Though maybe a little like Whelan in some photos. So who knows.

They're all just versions of Josh from 30 Rock.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 23:02 (ten years ago) link

We should be asking which of them will be asked to put on weight over the summer if Moynihan decides to leave the show anytime soon

Ned Ratchet (some dude), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 23:16 (ten years ago) link

Beck Bennett looks the most pre-disposed to adding some winter weight.
