Listening now.

Teklife was my fave album of the last few years, so... that'll take some beating.
Sounds great so far though. Def digging the last half more than the first, but... first listen, so who knows?

What I love about this music is how spare it is. It's almost a challenge, musically, to latch onto things, and yet the songs progress, go through changes just like normal music. I always find myself surprised at how LOUD the snare and hi-hats are, like someone who was blind might be surprised to see how bright light was for the first time. Watching the youtube videos of people dancing to this stuff makes it clear why it sound the way it does, but as a writer of music, and appreciator of new dance music, juke/footwork is like a faberge egg: specialized, seemingly of little use to non-devotees, and utterly unique.

(also, as to making music, I find this style of music EXTREMELY applicable to genre-fuckery. You can add almost anything to a juke template, and make it into a different kind of song. For some reason, this doesn't annoy me the way, say, dubstep or disco reworks might).

Dominique, Thursday, 24 October 2013 16:02 (ten years ago) link

such footwork

Dominique, I posted this recently in another thread:

This is one of the things I find awesome about footwork is basically its whole central premise as music specifically made for dance battles is the tension between how challenging it can be to dance to but still able to be danced to by a skillful dancer.

This is SO funky! Is it me or is this significantly more polished than anything else he's released so far? Seems like it's coming into its own, as in no longer an interesting curio but stuff I'd happily play in the company of others without them complaining?

I haven't had any interest before in what I've heard of this stuff, but so far Double Cup is great.

only heard 1 rashad album (double cup) yet it profoundly reached me

i'm a little drunk rn so probably shouldn't say too much but this is staggering, devastating news. can't think of the last musician death that's got me like this. the guy was blasting dance music into the sun, mission aborted halfway. fuck.

I can't believe this, he was so good and cranking out groundbreaking tracks like crazy. Plus, he always came across as a very chill, likeable guy. This really and truly sucks.

wow, this is horrible. absolutely caned teklife vol 1 when it came out, it's futurist & exciting, but it's also wickedly lean & precise in a way that was unlike other footwork I'd heard. feel like he resisted a lot of easier moves & there's a purism to the way everything comes together which makes it hit really hard & really cleanly. I would listen to it over & over like unfolding some exquisite piece of origami to try to see how it was made. man, RIP

I am fucking gutted about this. I had the pleasure of interviewing Rashad last year and he was a lovely guy. Teklife Vol1 got me through some tough times in 2012. Seriously one of my favourite artists and one of the most important modern stars in Chicago music history. RIP Rashad.

wow. i saw him at fwd in london a few years back when he played for the first time here and it was one of the best nights ive had in a club. this just seems so weird. he was always like a footwork representative too, not just cos he was reaching out to other scenes but im guessing cos he was such a cool relaxed kind of guy, so i wonder who will fill that role now. was a bit unsure about double cup when i first got it but i ended up really appreciating it (i liked teklife vol 1 more). seems like thats the most appropriate (in mood) record to play of his now. i cant believe it actually, footworks one of the things ive been most excited about in the last few years, and though he wasnt my favourite producer, most of that was down to the part rashad played in taking it outside chicago. i was really interested to see what he did after double cup too as it seemed such a change from what he was doing before. what a shame.
