mh i can confirm the ipad mini is definitely smaller than the regular or "air" one

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 04:20 (ten years ago) link

it even has an m7 chip

Does it? It isn’t listed on: http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/

Allen (etaeoe), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 04:26 (ten years ago) link

Never mind. Misread. You’re talking about the iPad mini

Allen (etaeoe), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 04:27 (ten years ago) link

whoa settle down there john siracusa

caek, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 04:45 (ten years ago) link

they must be making absolutely obscene margins on the higher storage ipads. 100$ for the jump from 64->128 is bad enough. $100 for the extra 16gb in the 32gb model is a lol apple obscenity.

caek, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 04:48 (ten years ago) link

I'm getting random restarts with mavericks

not cool

cozen, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 10:32 (ten years ago) link

ooer

not touching it for a few days

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 10:56 (ten years ago) link

install free'd up 10 gb for me

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 11:44 (ten years ago) link

I wonder when I'm going to have to upgrade my 6 year old iMac. Just installed Mavericks on it yesterday and it seems to be a tiny bit speedier.

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 11:47 (ten years ago) link

still no resolution independence. TERRIBLE

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 11:58 (ten years ago) link

Resolution independence is never gonna happen. Retina or nothing.

This does seem a lot better on my MBA, fwiw.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 12:10 (ten years ago) link

I've been traumatised by making old iPhones useless by always updating the iOS - is it still worth updating to Mavericks on a 4 y.o. MBP?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 12:59 (ten years ago) link

huh, gained 35 gigs

Euler, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 13:15 (ten years ago) link

installed mavericks on my 5 year old MBP and it's great xp

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 13:30 (ten years ago) link

mh, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 13:32 (ten years ago) link

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 14:53 (ten years ago) link

anyway to figure out why it's happening?

the error report is gibberish to me

cozen, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 15:51 (ten years ago) link

weird kernel extension, maybe? do you have any third-party mouse drivers or anything of that nature?

mh, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:01 (ten years ago) link

is there a way to tell when your mac has stopped 'optimizing' after install?

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:03 (ten years ago) link

bettertouchtool maybe? will have a look

cozen, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:08 (ten years ago) link

is there a way to tell when your mac has stopped 'optimizing' after install?

click the spotlight icon on your toolbar and it should have a progress bar if it's still indexing

diamonddave85, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:12 (ten years ago) link

anyway to figure out why it's happening?

take note of the time when your computer restarts, then open the Console application in Applications > Utilities then look for suspect messages in there right before the restart and google them

diamonddave85, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:13 (ten years ago) link

not sure, but I can tell you that your mom is still optimizing after install

Euler, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:13 (ten years ago) link

man i been saying they shd make the os x upgrades free forever, bout time

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

yeah it makes a ton of sense, prevents fragmentation, everybody is happy to get revamped faster running longer life macbooks for free

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link

default "waves" wallpaper sucks btw, i don't know what some ppl were smoking

Nhex, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:25 (ten years ago) link

like, with msft a subscription-model 'makes sense' because that is probably literally their only source of reliable revenue, they've even moved to a literal subscription model for office instead of tricking companies into thinking they're adding value by releasing a 'new' version of office every few years

apple makes money via huge hardware sales and the app store sales that come w/ it, i doubt that lion or ML sales accounted for even 5% of their revenue in the years they were released

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:26 (ten years ago) link

kinda mad though that i paid $60 for literal shit pieces of trash in L and ML, could have just waited it out til MAVERIX

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:28 (ten years ago) link

i dont think i ever paid of any of them because i am an outlaw

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:32 (ten years ago) link

i remember when i bought Tiger for like $80 or something absurd and people would ask me for the DVD because apple never bothered with anything as barbaric as a 'product key'

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

I doubt even comes close to 1% of sales tbh.

stet, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:34 (ten years ago) link

def a rounding error

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

actually causes apple to lose money

乒乓, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

I don't understand the desktop wallpapers thing. I have a Mac that started with 10.7 and offers Aqua wallpapers from the tiger days, while another Mac that started with 10.6 only offers one folder. Something weird afoot.

stet, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

i just use cool pictures for my wallpaper, right now i have one of a praying mantis

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:37 (ten years ago) link
