Everything about Boogie Nights has to do with the '70s, and sure enough, that extends to the poster, too.

(A couple of the images above aren't showing up for me at work, so sorry if it's already been posted.)

WONDERFUL THREAD

have long wanted there to be a name for this basically vanished genre of movie poster illustration, this shit was like 75% of any video store i ever visited as a kid. Especially great for actually kinda serious heavy movies like California Split.

Harry and Walter Go To New York! With Michael Caine & Diane Keaton! It's actually pretty good, not great, but entertaining nonetheless. The two bits of trivia from the imdb:
The film went massively overbudget and caused such a major cash crisis that Columbia Pictures nearly went out of business until a fund of German dentists, Cinerenta, agreed to help

co-finance the studio's other films.

After disastrous previews, Columbia heavily cut the film down. Director Mark Rydell claimed most of the film's jokes were the main victims.

That triva should read:

Are there any posters in the last 15 years that are a throwback to this style?

The giffed-up art for Jackie Brown is very appropriate for its time.

And this is the second time today Freebie & The Bean has come up in conversation.

not to get all thread police but the thread title has the word CARICATURE in it, not just any old illustration

A representation, especially pictorial or literary, in which the subject's distinctive features or peculiarities are deliberately exaggerated to produce a comic or grotesque effect.

re: these posters in video rental places, always musty-smelling and discolored by years of sunlight through the front windows.

I think Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould's faces were made specifically to be caricatured this way

Great thread! I used to hate these, but now that there's more historical distance I love them. Although I do have some nostalgia for the context that I used to seem them in, as the covers of 15 year old VHS tapes in tiny rural gas station video rental sections.

Anybody else notice that the Choose Your Own Adventure books kept up this motif long after movie posters had discarded it?
