ethnic stereotypes on parade

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Sunday, 3 November 2013 04:18 (ten years ago) link

Post-Miss Universe, this episode tanked HARD. Credit to Kerry Washington for really committing to every character she played (except whatever that was in the cartoon game show sketch), but tonight could've been so much better.

Maybe Lorne could rent some of Jimmy Fallon's writers.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 November 2013 05:03 (ten years ago) link

i thought kerry washington's miss uganda was pretty funny, but i felt like i was being racist or something for laughing. & then i was thinking, is there any possible way for a show who's only real trick is "dumb/weird/otherwise 'other' character in whatever such situation" to be both inclusive (racially/culturally) + then also funny? and then i started thinking about that 'is all comedy inherently conservative' thread.

sleepingbag, Sunday, 3 November 2013 05:12 (ten years ago) link

Well, a Miss Universe sketch is just a bad premise. Set up exotic characters and knock them all down. Der. I mean, Miss Bolivia had cocaine on her face. D'ya'getit? Hilarious.

There's no shortage of good writers out there, but SNL seems to be a magnet for the laziest shittiest coasting-est writers on the market.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 November 2013 05:18 (ten years ago) link

Cecily Strong seems to have laid claim to that twilight zone after Weekend Update, though. Her best stuff almost always comes in the final third of any week's show.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 November 2013 05:20 (ten years ago) link

man kerry washington was great. good episode for jay pharoah. no great sketches, enjoyed the opening, how's he doing, mooney's thing. actually laughed: jay's shaq, wondering 'is that lady sovereign?' ffwding thru eminem.

balls, Sunday, 3 November 2013 05:45 (ten years ago) link

they literally had al sharpton or was i imagining that

sleepingbag, Sunday, 3 November 2013 05:58 (ten years ago) link

I dunno, I cackled a few times at How's He Doing?

Yeah, I think they've done that sketch once or twice before and this was definitely the best version I recall. I laughed.

shortbread, offal and heroin (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 3 November 2013 07:24 (ten years ago) link

That parody of What Does The Fox Say was bizarre, like Weird Al in reverse. "Let's take a funny song and make it LESS funny!"

schwantz, Monday, 4 November 2013 01:54 (ten years ago) link

Liked the teeth-clacking way Kate McKinnon as Angela Merkel said "texts".

Plasmon, Monday, 4 November 2013 01:57 (ten years ago) link

yeah the what does the fox say thing (plus the boy dance party and probably a couple of other similar things i'm forgetting) made me think that ppl have been way too hard on lonely island

balls, Monday, 4 November 2013 02:08 (ten years ago) link

I actually had to pause my dvr and get out my computer and finally watch the fucking fox video before diving into that parody

obie stompin' moby (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 4 November 2013 03:13 (ten years ago) link

and boy aren't you glad you did

sleepingbag, Monday, 4 November 2013 05:18 (ten years ago) link

I quite enjoyed Nasim's motivational speaker/sound effects character, and the odd-ball ice cream sketch. Kerry Washington was a great host.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 4 November 2013 05:38 (ten years ago) link

I actually had to pause my dvr and get out my computer and finally watch the fucking fox video before diving into that parody

Ha, we did the exact same thing.

I know it's about as big a target as possible, but I laughed at the "Date or Diss" MTV dating show parody a few times.
"I've got a birthmark that screams." and "my teeth are allllways bleeding."

Walter Galt, Monday, 4 November 2013 07:43 (ten years ago) link

The tone of the MTV thing was just perfect.

shortbread, offal and heroin (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 4 November 2013 09:39 (ten years ago) link

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Sunday, 17 November 2013 04:44 (ten years ago) link

I predict she will either be an awesome host or they won't do shit with her

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Sunday, 17 November 2013 04:45 (ten years ago) link

Hmmm

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Sunday, 17 November 2013 04:54 (ten years ago) link

So far better than average, though the bar is awfully low.

Murgatroid, Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:00 (ten years ago) link

Cover songs sketch was pretty ace.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:00 (ten years ago) link

we've all seen rob ford press conferences and he doesn't have that stupid accent so its bs they gave it to him.

his actual antics are way more outrageous than that sketch

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:01 (ten years ago) link

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:02 (ten years ago) link

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:19 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, speech writer could become my new favorite recurring Weekend Update character

Murgatroid, Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:21 (ten years ago) link

how many speeches are there for him to do though

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:21 (ten years ago) link

Blockbuster Video thing was awesome.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:41 (ten years ago) link

This has been really good

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:50 (ten years ago) link

yeah outside of the opener. i liked the acting school one, and this current sketch with aging rockstar is really sharp

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:57 (ten years ago) link

So did she fire her manager for putting "Applause" in that car commercial

Murgatroid, Sunday, 17 November 2013 05:59 (ten years ago) link

The Ms. Germanotta sketch made me a little sad.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 November 2013 06:07 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, she's far too open about her insecurities about being a has-been.

Murgatroid, Sunday, 17 November 2013 06:08 (ten years ago) link

gaga was great. speech critic had me dying. good ep.

balls, Sunday, 17 November 2013 06:08 (ten years ago) link

I had no idea what the cup song was until tonight

imago-er not a show-er (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 17 November 2013 06:16 (ten years ago) link

Let me get this straight. There's 81 million views on a video with an intro that's over a minute long and has the unwieldy, totally fucking ridiculous title "Cups (Pitch Perfect's "When I'm Gone")"

imago-er not a show-er (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 17 November 2013 06:26 (ten years ago) link

"You have to see this video! It's a great song called "Cups (Pitch Perfect's "When I'm Gone)." What? Yeah that's the title. No, Pitch Perfect was a movie. Yeah, we saw Taken 2 that week. Anyway, you watching it? I know nothing is happening. Ok, just keep watching. Keep watching. Yeah the intro is like a minute. I don't know why."

Repeat 81 million times

imago-er not a show-er (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 17 November 2013 06:31 (ten years ago) link
