still haven't given in yet, but still tempted

I like the feel of the 5c's curved back edges, but not how it's significantly heavier than the 5 or 5s.

So now that all cellular carriers worldwide get the exaxt same model of iPad for the first time, can you switch between carriers with the same iPad? There used to be a blurb when you ordered one from Apple that "your iPad will only work with the carrier you select". But now it just says "your iPad will be configured to operate with the carrier you choose right out of the box." So since I'm paying for service monthly and it's not subsidized by the carrier, can I change at will?

Yes

乒乓, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

I'm going to buy a 5c and spraypaint it matte black DIY style. Might even stencil an anarchy symbol on there.

sick

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

tell us about it polyphonic. what is it like?

Well, a lot of things about it that are new are very old to other people. For example, Siri. I only have an iphone 4. *tiny violin plays*

For all of the talk about how light it is, it still feels pretty substantive. It's not flimsy. It's nice that all the various apps I was not allowed to download are suddenly available to me. It's fun having a camera. It's nice that it doesn't constantly crash like my 1 did.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 19:38 (ten years ago) link

ah... wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic or not.

Nhex, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 19:58 (ten years ago) link

I don't even know anymore.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 20:01 (ten years ago) link

Lol at how fast the iphone 5c ship is sinking. What stupid shittrash phone

乒乓, Monday, 18 November 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

I got a 5s yesterday. It's pretty rad. But it's weird how I set up the touch unlock with my thumb and now only my thumb (none of my other fingers) work to unlock it. Shouldn't any finger work since your fingerprint is the same? Maybe I have a fucked-up thumb.

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 18 November 2013 18:45 (ten years ago) link

No man I don't think you get how fingerprints work

乒乓, Monday, 18 November 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

yr thumb is fucked up

lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2013 18:47 (ten years ago) link

return it

max, Monday, 18 November 2013 18:48 (ten years ago) link

In humans, the thumb and the ring finger on the right hand have identical prints; the index and the middle on the left hand and the pinky on the right have identical prints; the rest of your fingers are all unique, except for the left thumb, which is identical to your right big toe

Reverse the handed-ness if you're left handed (i.e. thumb and ring finger on left hand instead of right)

Hope that helps

handsplaining

polyphonic, Monday, 18 November 2013 18:56 (ten years ago) link

Gonna use my fucked-up thumb to hit flag post on you fools.

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 18 November 2013 18:57 (ten years ago) link

going to use your right big toe

cozen, Monday, 18 November 2013 19:34 (ten years ago) link

I'm bowing down to a little shrine of 乒乓 right now. I've never seen fingerprints explained so well or so concisely. Thanks, man.

mh, Monday, 18 November 2013 20:02 (ten years ago) link

I still don't really know what all to do w the new stuff added btwn 4 and 5s; like I keep discovering I have all of these new things. I think the only time I've used Siri were the 2 or 3 times I made her have conversations with my friends Siris

caek, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 17:54 (ten years ago) link

(I want a mini retina)

mh, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

what if you want to look at a picture of a rainbow get a big ipad

lag∞n, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 18:52 (ten years ago) link

am seriously fucked off w/mavericks

it's easily the worst, least stable release of OS X I've installed in my 13 years as a user of OS X. first issue was all the hard reboots and now I'm getting lots of horrible screen artefacting

symptomatic of apple's neglect of OS X as it increases its focus on iOS? iunno, I always got the impression that OS X was still p.well resourced

cozen, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:48 (ten years ago) link

I think your mac is dying

乒乓, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

it's a mid-2011 MBP. they usu last a bit longer than 2 years ime

cozen, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

mebbe a rebuild & restore is in order

cozen, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:52 (ten years ago) link

Take it in under applecare

I've ran it on four macs so far no issues

乒乓, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:52 (ten years ago) link

You could try with a clean install on a new drive, maybe booting off USB. If it runs well the it's your hard drive / specific install. If it still does all that your logic board is probably borked

乒乓, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:53 (ten years ago) link

p.sure my logic board has been replaced w/in the last year in this machine

most likely the HD I reckon. maybe I'll SSD

cozen, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:54 (ten years ago) link

Will be the best decision you ever make

乒乓, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:55 (ten years ago) link

I've had zero issues on a 2010 MBP and an old-ass Mac Pro that isn't even supposed to be able to run mavericks

mh, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 21:58 (ten years ago) link

my 17" mbp has been waking up from sleep a lot since mavericks installation, never did that before; just think it's getting jealous of all the time I spend with my rmbp though

Euler, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:00 (ten years ago) link

I'm 50/50 on that -- the mbp that previously kept having trouble w/sleep mode is perfectly fine now, but the mac pro (which I never really used sleep mode on) seems to wake up.

mh, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:05 (ten years ago) link

yeah coz this is not an unusually unstable release afaict (two machines upgraded). i would start with a clean reinstall and take it from there.

caek, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:11 (ten years ago) link

can I be arsed backing up all the bumpf on my computer y/n hmmm

cozen, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:19 (ten years ago) link

what, you don't already have a backup strategy?

jesus christ man it's 2013

* throws computer out window, restores new one from backup *

mh, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:25 (ten years ago) link

don't really have much to backup tbrr, store most everything in the cloud as is

movies - netflix
music - spotify
pics - flickr
docs - dropbox

cozen, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:33 (ten years ago) link

madness

caek, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:38 (ten years ago) link

mavericks is solid as a rock on my 2010 mbp.

re backups: switch on time machine, buy a cheap-arse external hdd and plug it in once a week. worth the hassle imo. my recent (internal) hdd drama was not in any way a drama.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:41 (ten years ago) link

when will macbook airs have 1tb harddrive im waiting

lag∞n, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 22:47 (ten years ago) link

ok it's time. i'm going to replace the HD in my mini with an SSD and install a 1TB secondary HD.

if anybody's been thinkin about this stuff, what are:

1) the best drives to get these days? a samsung 840 for the SSD? and?

2) good strategies for data migration? i have a SATA enclosure, so i was thinking i'd put the 1TB HD in that and copy all my data directories to it. then install it in my mini. on the SD i'd do a clean install of les mavericks? put that in the mini and bam?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 23:57 (ten years ago) link

I did something similar and after looking into it, decided to only put music and movies on the larger drive (maybe my Lightroom photos too, can't remember.) Basically just to have as much on the SSD as possible.

eris bueller (lukas), Thursday, 21 November 2013 00:05 (ten years ago) link

For the 1TB I use a cheap western digital and it's fine

5400 v 7200 is not a big concern I think since the platters are so dense data seeking times probably won't differ by much

But you can maybe look at tech review sites to see if that's true

乒乓, Thursday, 21 November 2013 13:49 (ten years ago) link

Data migration strategy seems good, make sure you put the SSD into the mini first before you install mavericks

It's easy to make a usb bootable Mavericks w/ Diskmaker X

Biggest pain will probably be getting your programs to find the new libraries but should be okay if you had iPhoto or w/e keep all the actual photos inside the iPhoto library file

乒乓, Thursday, 21 November 2013 13:51 (ten years ago) link

My pro tip for life now is to make sure, if you have two-step authentication turned on for anything (say, for your Apple ID) that you keep your list of trusted devices/phone numbers up to date, and make sure you know EXACTLY where that recovery key is.

Very narrowly dodged a bullet in the last 24 hours. On a side note, two-factor auth is really secure!!

mh, Thursday, 21 November 2013 14:41 (ten years ago) link

1-factor 4eva

i use a password keeper, it makes me indescribably smug just thinking about it (iow don't burst my bubble)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 21 November 2013 22:22 (ten years ago) link

and furthermore no one will ever guess my password

lag∞n, Thursday, 21 November 2013 22:25 (ten years ago) link
