mookieproof, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 17:02 (ten years ago) link

doesn't that one look like a fake show poster that would be in the background of a movie or w/e

iatee, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 17:03 (ten years ago) link

there really is something eerie about all these posters

iatee, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 17:14 (ten years ago) link

an outgrowth of the eerieness of the unkillable sitcom

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 17:16 (ten years ago) link

Haha, yeah, the whole genre losing any kind of attachment to any audience whatsoever, existing in this vacuum that seems to assume that someone, somewhere is stoked that SEAN is on TV and can't wait to see his antics.

one thing that bothers me about this poster is that you can tell that the main dude's hand is photoshopped because he's pointing at you in the poster version and not in the banner version which is located a foot away

during this poster's last reign at the top, I was convinced he was doing a "Cyclops" like gesture towards his glasses, but on the current version I realized his finger's not there... OR IS IT???

I think possibly the WORST ad campaigns ever are those Seinfeld in syndication banners in the subway.

a few years ago, this one happened to be prevalent around the time of the michael richards meltdown, and I had a really strong urge to cross it out and sharpie in "N166er!"

Attention passengers due to an earlier incident we are moving hella slow

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:34 (ten years ago) link

this story about how the MTA will give you a late pass for work was kinda funny

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/10/nyregion/delayed-train-skeptical-boss-mta-will-give-passengers-a-late-note.html

“There was a disruption in service, specifically signal trouble, sick customer, brakes in emergency and track circuit failure, which caused massive service delays, reroutes and/or trains to be discharged on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, A, B, C, D, F, J, L, M, N, Q and R lines,” one recent response read, in part. “As a result, any one delay lasted up to 82 minutes.”

dmr, Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:34 (ten years ago) link

We hope to be moving shortly

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:43 (ten years ago) link

the E train really has no business saying it is "delayed" at this point. If you're delayed every day, it's not a delay!

ugh the 7 has been terrible lately

iatee, Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:57 (ten years ago) link

My favorite subway announcement construction is "Due to an earlier incident"

It's so all-purpose as excuses go, I love it.

due to an earlier incident, the universe exists

I think I posted this upthread but my favorite two announcements ever were:

"Attention passengers we are being held in the station due to a delay in service."

"Thank you for your inconvenience."

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 04:10 (ten years ago) link

A tautology and a malapropism. Or something. What are the appropriate rhetorical descriptions?

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 04:12 (ten years ago) link

I love the "moving momentarily" announcement made several times over 10-15 minutes

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 04:56 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it's like you're in some kind of superscale model demonstrating Zeno's Paradox or something.

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 05:00 (ten years ago) link

Also what's with the repeated bing bongs with the doors not quite closing? Are there actually people standing on the threshold hedging their bets that are keeping the doors from closing or is it some kind of conductor fakeout, playing for just a little more time?

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 05:02 (ten years ago) link

I get really anxious when they do the "boong" like they're about to make an announcement but then no announcement comes

four weeks pass...

Okay, so seriously. That poster for Showtime with Don Cheadle in a blindfold and William H. Macy grunting at the camera: at the bottom, Don Cheadle's torso ends a good half-inch before everybody else's. It's easily missed in the darkness, but, Jesus, that's sloppy. Next to it on the G platform at Nassau, we also saw a poster for the new Ice Cube movie where the inept rookie has been really awkwardly shrunk by Photoshop, I guess to show that he's out of his league asking out Ice Cube's daughter! (or whatever) but I swear they could fit two of his head inside of Ice Cube's head and it just looks bad. Then there was a Seamless poster showing how you could order everything on your phone, the numbers didn't add up, and even had things where one 4.99 smoothie totaled up to 6.49 or something. I mean, how hard would it have been to get that right?

I've been looking for a thread to post this, and I guess this is as good as any:

It's actually a visually very good ad, but it's also creepy as fuck and sounds fascistic

due to signal problems at jay st-metrotech, we will sit here for 45 minutes. you may want to take the B57 bus instead -- although it is unlikely that all of you will fit -- but as soon as you leave this train will depart

mookieproof, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 16:47 (ten years ago) link

i just missed that apparently

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:02 (ten years ago) link

Anyone else notice the "take a sample, take a look" incense-and-comic-book guy in the 14th St./6th Ave tunnel getting a little more intense? Yesterday I swear he was going on like "I don't care what you do, you can be a fucking slut, sell your body, take a sample, take a sample, take a look..."

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:03 (ten years ago) link

Due to blah blah blah, the last stop on this Manhattan-bound J train will be...Marcy Avenue. Which is in Brooklyn. Enjoy your walk across the bridge in the cold!
