Data migration strategy seems good, make sure you put the SSD into the mini first before you install mavericks

It's easy to make a usb bootable Mavericks w/ Diskmaker X

Biggest pain will probably be getting your programs to find the new libraries but should be okay if you had iPhoto or w/e keep all the actual photos inside the iPhoto library file

My pro tip for life now is to make sure, if you have two-step authentication turned on for anything (say, for your Apple ID) that you keep your list of trusted devices/phone numbers up to date, and make sure you know EXACTLY where that recovery key is.

Very narrowly dodged a bullet in the last 24 hours. On a side note, two-factor auth is really secure!!

i use a password keeper, it makes me indescribably smug just thinking about it (iow don't burst my bubble)

Hey people! my dad has a line on a used rmbp for $1250 and a used 2011 mbp for $1000. I'm trying to talk him into getting the retina with future proofing as my argument. Am I correct in thinking the retina is a much better deal? What other talking points should I be considering?

he shd get an air

lag∞n, Friday, 22 November 2013 23:08 (ten years ago) link

why? what's a fair price for a used air?

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link

theyre cool and light and the battery life is good, unless hes doing some srs processing he prob doesnt need the pro, idk how much they cost

lag∞n, Friday, 22 November 2013 23:22 (ten years ago) link

i guess wanting a larger screen could be an argument for the pro too, but the 13" air is a p nice size all things considered

lag∞n, Friday, 22 November 2013 23:27 (ten years ago) link

13" rmbp only costs a little more (mod the same ram/hd size), is .02" thicker, and weighs .5 lbs more; same battery life too. not sure what the advantage of the 13" air is supposed to be

Euler, Friday, 22 November 2013 23:52 (ten years ago) link

hmm its cheaper thinner and lighter maybe

lag∞n, Friday, 22 November 2013 23:55 (ten years ago) link

Eh the 13" MB Air starts out at $1100, you can get it $930 refurbished off of Apple (I just did this) and it's fine, as new, 1 year warranty

Sure you don't get 8 GB RAM or 256 GB SSD

But it's also $200 cheaper

And you get 3 more hours of battery life

乒乓, Saturday, 23 November 2013 01:27 (ten years ago) link

Oh wait the base rMBP is also 128/4

乒乓, Saturday, 23 November 2013 01:28 (ten years ago) link

my gmail is still not playing nice with maverick's mail

but i really love this airmail app

the late great, Saturday, 23 November 2013 02:30 (ten years ago) link

i can't see the air advantage. it's cute but the non-retina screen is going to look a bit past-it soon.

4 gb ram for OS X seems like a bad idea

Euler, Saturday, 23 November 2013 03:47 (ten years ago) link

anecdotally ive been using this 2011 air for two years now and its by a long shot the best apple computer ive ever used in terms of performance, has handled every os x update w/ ease--i keep sparrow and twitter app and a bunch of tabs open at once and its never had a problem, whereas the 2011 imac i use at work is constantly hanging and i havent even upgraded it to mavericks yet

max, Saturday, 23 November 2013 13:03 (ten years ago) link

i think the dream setup would be an 11" air and a big thunderbolt display with a few drives daisy chained

You would think so but I think Maverix has this new RAM whizzy bang thing sweeper jig

In real world use it's fine, also the SSDs are now PCIe instead of SATA and that's great too

Anyway RAM/storage upgrades happen in lockstep so there's always that $200 gap

And both are solder, non-user upgradeable so you're stuck with what you ordered when you ordered

Re: future proofing, I can see that but I dunno how much of the internet is retina ready since I've never been on it w/ a retina mac

I don't notice any big difference between my iphone 5 and computer screens in terms of resolution

乒乓, Saturday, 23 November 2013 14:55 (ten years ago) link

max strangely enough I also had/have a 2011 air and my parents have a 2011 imac

the imac definitely feels really 'slow' in comparison and I'm 100% sure it's because it has a mechanical hard drive instead of a SSD

Want really badly to swap in a SSD but the process involves taking off the glass front panel and that's frightening to contemplate

乒乓, Saturday, 23 November 2013 14:56 (ten years ago) link

pretty much everyone seems to think the air is the best computer theyve ever had, and yeah the internet is very much not at all retina ready and prob will be v slow to adapt, but theres other stuff a sick ass screen is good for like watching movies or w/e

lag∞n, Saturday, 23 November 2013 15:01 (ten years ago) link

Yah watching movies for sure would be pretty cool

Tho most movies max out at 1080p but I bet VLC or w/e has some sick upscaling algs

Still only a 15" screen tho

乒乓, Saturday, 23 November 2013 15:15 (ten years ago) link

my work setup is a 15" rmbp + Thunderbolt Display (lol autocapitalize for that, thanks apple) and Magic Trackpad (lol there too) and it is fab though no retina but then when I'm on the road it's a different kind of magic then

deleting 120+ gb on my 17" mbp helped with mavericks creeping but gotta figure out if it's worth going ssd on a machine from 2009

Euler, Saturday, 23 November 2013 15:35 (ten years ago) link

Don't fear taking off panel it is easy but you don't need fancy suction cups just ones under dollar from hardware store is fine!

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 23 November 2013 15:53 (ten years ago) link

Torx bits though.

It's worth it brother, especially since those 2009 MBPs are a peach to work on and a 256 SSD is like $140 on sale

xp I have torx bits it's the new Apple pentalobe screws that are a pain

乒乓, Saturday, 23 November 2013 15:55 (ten years ago) link

def easy to work on, put in more ram a year-ish ago, took 10 mins tops

Euler, Saturday, 23 November 2013 15:58 (ten years ago) link

Also thinking of upgrading a 2009 MBP but kind of a stupid question: how do replace the old hard drive with an SSD? and how do you go about the migration (I want to keep my CD drive)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 23 November 2013 16:11 (ten years ago) link

Buy a SSD and a USB to SATA adapter

Connect SSD to mac and use Super Duper to copy your hard drive to the SSD

Follow instructions here http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_15%22 for hard drive replacement

Swap out the hard drive and put the SSD in

You're done

乒乓, Saturday, 23 November 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link

just bought a 240gig Samsung SSD and 3.5" case adapter to use as a system/apps disk on my 2008 Mac Pro, which is showing it's age. I can't wait. It already has 10gigs RAM and 5 hard-drives (one in the second optical bay).

dan selzer, Saturday, 23 November 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

xp - thx! seems easy enough

Famous last words

I've got a jailbroken iPhone 3GS, no contract, no issues, and I don't feel the need to upgrade. It's running iOS 5, and I plan to keep it that way.

How likely is it that Apple stops supporting the 3GS soon? What I want to avoid is the situation where about year before I plan to leave Canada, when I really don't want to be in a contract, the phone is bolloxed and can't be fixed/iOS 5 implodes. At the moment I've got at least another 2 and a half years in Canada, so I could reasonably enter a contract.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:22 (ten years ago) link

don't expect updates, but no reason why ios5 is unlikely to stop working, or at least not in a way that a factory reset wouldn't fix

caek, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:26 (ten years ago) link

Your biggest concern I think is that the battery will conk out in which case you can pay ~$80 USD or so to get it replaced by Apple

If that happens in all likelihood you'll get a nice refurbished 3GS

If the phone is bolloxed just make sure you have enough set aside to buy an off-contract new iPhone

Then you won't be locked in to a contract

乒乓, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:26 (ten years ago) link

A 5s with no contract appears to cost around $840 here... I don't think I could face it! Good point about the battery being the most likely problem, it's already not great. Hmm.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:30 (ten years ago) link

My iPhone 3GS would randomly shut off and not turn on again until plugged in

This was exactly a year ago

There are places, probably in Chinatown, that will replace your battery for less than $80. But if you're committed to using the phone until it is wrest from your hands by fate then I would go the Apple route as you'll most likely get a brand new old phone

You don't have to pay an off-contract 5s. You could buy a 5c (lol) or the 4S (which they still make)

乒乓, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:33 (ten years ago) link

if you have the cash, and if you're planning to leave a country just owning your phone makes life much simpler, and will probably save you money in the long run, especially if you leave lol north america. but yeah, a new 4s will feel very snappy to you, and is much more affordable.

if you've got a steady hand, you can replace an iphone battery yourself for about $20 http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+3G+Battery+Replacement/577

caek, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:35 (ten years ago) link

oh jeez let's find something else to talk about

markers, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:40 (ten years ago) link

heh, sorry markers. yeah, I might look at a 4s or maybe I'll bite the bullet and get the damn contract so that I own a phone by the time I leave. I think the real reason I don't want a contract is that I might murder my supervisor and have to flee the country.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:51 (ten years ago) link

If you can afford the initial outlay you should buy it outright - you'll end up saving money in the long run

乒乓, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:58 (ten years ago) link

yeah i know this sounds like one of those "rich people do this" quiddities, but just buying it is simpler and long run cheaper.

caek, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 02:10 (ten years ago) link

oh my god, I just did the math on a cheaper, non-contract phone and data plan over a 30 month period, and of course you're right. How did I not notice this? Now I hate the whole industry and want to cling onto the 3GS till the battery only lasts 25 minutes. Caek, this is a N America thing, isn't it? In the UK the diff between the cost of a contract and off-contract monthly plan wouldn't be so large.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 02:18 (ten years ago) link

my pay-as-you-go phone deal in the US is $40/month. that's about as cheap as you can go. i get the impression canada is about the same. same thing in europe is about £/€10, but contracts are also much cheaper, so i think the difference between contract and pay-as-you-go works out about the same.

i already owned my phone when i moved here. i think if you include the original phone cost, i'm not saving an enormous amount compared to being on a contract, but i travel/move often enough for it to be by far the best/simplest thing for me.

but imo, even if you don't travel, own your phone. i don't think you can find a contract+phone deal where the saving is worth the bullshit of having a two year contract with the worst consumer-facing industry in the developed world.
