Ellen Margulies sat in a cloistered room, trying to see if the flower would bloom, tasted the sweet pollen and opened her eyes, rode the White Pony.

wow!

hey-it was stirmonster who has the We Want Prince 12", I'd never heard about it and was just joking about how ballsy it is to name a song after an influence like that! I knew Lynn Tolliver was involved because another member of this community, Lauren, found that out somehow, and being from Cleveland, was familiar with him as a Cleveland radio personality of some sort? Had no idea he was behind a Black Eyed Peas song though!

And I know I Need a Freak is classic, but I'm still all about If I Gave You A Party.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

"I need a freak" is on the Andrew Weatherall fabric mix cd.
Presumably you're aware of that Dale.

Bn1 (Bn1), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I love I need a freak but if I gave you a party is one of the best EVER. So sweet.

Yes, Dali I'm legit and no offense taken. I currently live in a surburb of Cleveland, Ohio. Tynn Tolliver is the lead voice that you hear on record. When we performed live I would do the lead parts because he did want to get onstage. We all did vocals on the EP and 12" records. Thanks for your support! - Keep Sexual Harassment Alive!!!!

The group began with Lourdes Figueroa (A latina hottie who later became Mrs. Lynn Tolliver) and Myself. We later became a multi-ethnic band with a little something for everybody. Sexy, Hot and Horney - Good concept..It worked!

I have a couple of the origional radio commericals that aired back then. The audio quality is very poor because they were recorded on cassette tape. I'll try to clean them up and provide a link.

Stirmonster sorry for the mistake on "We want Prince" I noticed that I credited the wrong person after I posted my comments. We also had a song titled "Sex Drive" that remains unreleased.

When I was tying to find a connection between the Black Eyed Peas "My Humps" and "I Need A Freak" I came across all of these links referencing our band.
I was so suprised and excited. Lynn Tolliver now works for Hot 105.7 FM WHJX in Florida as the Program Director.

I did hear preview of "I Need a Freak" on Andrew Wetherall's Fabric 19 CD. I Like the way it mixes into The Egyptian Lover – Freak-A-Holic track. I fact I e-mailed Andrew thru the Haywire website (www.haywire.co.uk)last nite. He didn't seem to have a site of his own. I also like the "If I Gave you a Party" remix by Syrup. The only other "I Need A Freak" remix release that I knew of was by rapper Too Short awhile back. To be honest with you I don't belive that Lynn is aware of all the remixes either.

Sorry..
Correction: When we performed live I would do the lead parts because he didn't want to get onstage.

WTF? How did this become the Sexual Harrasment thread? When's the reissue coming out? Hott!!

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 02:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry Bobby, I found this page while searching for information about my band. There was so much love for SH music that I had to comment.

Dale Jackson, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 02:36 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't have the 'we want prince', i've just heard it.

there have been a few covers of 'i need a freak'. this one is a bootleg that adds new drums and extends it. there's at least another two cover versions of it apart from the one by too short but the artists names escape me just now.

copies of this pressing turned up in the shops recently.

Sorry to all the Laid Back/"White Horse" fans. You don't have to ride the white pony anymore. You also don't got to be a bitch, even if you wanna be rich.

Disco Not Disco 2

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Disco (Not Disco) 2 seconded. Not as exciting as the first volume, but unlike the first volume, you can still find it pretty easily (I got a brand-new copy for $9 from Amazon, of all places), and it has some other essential stuff ("Bostich," "Problemes d'Amour," an edit of "Let's Go Swimming," etc.)

telephone thing, Friday, 6 January 2006 20:13 (eighteen years ago) link

i just listened to d(nd)2 yesterday. it's f-ing great. i wouldn't say it's not exciting, it's just a different part of the scene. way more electro. the first one was more about people not usually doing dance or disco doing disco (not disco)

It definitely is exciting, just in a different way. My issue with it is that the classic-to-dud ratio seems to be just a little lower than the first installment (I mean really, Barry Waite?).

This song is obv about the bleeping and the blooping.

Isn't Steely Dan's "Chasing The Dragon" about smoking heroin or freebase or both (one a "chaser" for the other, in alkie speak)?

Children we have it right here
It's the light in my eyes
It's perfection and grace
It's the smile on my face

Tonight when I chase the dragon
The water will change to cherry wine
And the silver will turn to gold
Time out of mind

Yeah, it's a drug reference.

Disco Not Disco 2 was kind of dissapointing when it came out. 2 records instead of 3 and a bunch of the tracks were stuff that most DJs already had, where it felt like 1 unearthed some rarer stuff. They're both essential and I don't leave home without them, of course.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:40 (eighteen years ago) link

a bunch of the tracks were stuff that most DJs already had,

these cds were probably one of my first exposures to this stuff and after the fact, i've found a lot more of the records of stuff on 1 than 2

jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 7 January 2006 20:49 (eighteen years ago) link

They're both good to add your own selections to. Disco Not Disco is a great tag: so many artists from dif subgenres and genres messed with elements of disco, and you can even go back and pretend you're Nicky Siano, and pick "pre"-disco, that works as disco (at least in a Nicky Siano's Legendary The Gallery, LSD=friendly ambience). Like "Marbles," from John McLaughlin's 1969 album Devotion.Kind of a warped "Time Is Tight" and/or "I Can't Turn You Loose." They're basically jamming (edited by Alan Douglas, to McL.'s distress, but it works).

did anyone see that TBS commercial for their broadcast of lord of the rings, where they started "scratching" a scene of gandalf on his horse with this bright rainbow'y background -and they were playing "ride the white horse"? it was kinda insane

Lulu was playing this on Radio 2 the other afternoon. Someone wrote in saying that Goldfrapp's "Ride A White Horse" was a cover version and this was the original. Lulu let it run for about two minutes before hurriedly fading it amidst mutters of "don't get that one" etc.

man, so i finally found the full length White Horse is on. i'm rather embarrassed by it. i imagined the makers of this song to be dark and brooding german industrial dudes in leather, but they're like laid back surfer brahs just chillin on the beach. totally dorky.
