timely thread. I don't know if he's getting a push or what but I've also just discovered this guy and a live performance of 'says' made me well up at a piece of music for the first time in ages.

saw him this weekend, it was astounding. weird mix of baby boomers shepherded there by the local orchestra (saw a lady plugging her ears) and then like hipstery kids. strange venue too. anyway, am never gonna miss a show of his, at times it was the quietest show i've ever seen and at others the most enveloping.

Did you see the Chicago show last night or a different one? (I wanted to see it but couldn't.)

Nils Frahm has written his first score for one-take feature film Victoria with the soundtrack being released on London-based contemporary classical label Erased Tapes Records:

Filmed in Berlin, Victoria is centred around a runaway party girl who joins a group of friendly men on a night out, but the night takes a dramatic turn as their night turns from a party, into a bank robbery – and the music reflects this change as it changes from techno – from DJ Koze – to sombre piano sounds.

I keep meaning to but I haven't really found the right moment for it yet. His performance at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year was brilliant, really want it to be released in its entirety.

I generally prefer him when he is "just playing the piano" but I actually like the other stuff on this, too.

his LNT mix is good but Jon Hopkins does the same thing several orders of magnitude better IMO, do check it out

also Spaces (Frahm's best record ever by a considerable distance) now seems to be streamable in full on US Spotify, anybody who hasn't heard it bc it hasn't been immediately available is out of excuses

yeah Spaces is amazing. was a little disappointed to listen to some of his records after seeing his incredible show but that record definitely captures the vibe. there was nothing wrong with the other ones but they were a little less... immense? or something

lovely sense of space and silence in his work. minimalism is often overlooked in our noisy times! i find a lot of modern composers, neoclassical, avant-tronic (whatever!) void of much emotion... but frahms music doesn't feel cold or empty. i love Colleen for the same reasons

I don't like most of the stuff i have heard from him. It is too polished, too minimal and too easy listening for my ears. Boring mainstream piano. Hauschka on the other hand seems much more adventurous and exciting.

The studio stuff may be hit and miss before now, but he's great live. Check out the montreux jazz or boiler room shows on youtube.

the instrumentals definitely stand out among the more experimental tracks, which sound to me like Nicolas Jaar demos. title track is beautifully paced. he does dynamics better than most - tracks that feel light and minimal can suddenly swell and engulf you like waves.

Forget the youtube videos, they don't prepare you for seeing him play live in person & at full volume. Saw him in Brussels on Friday and he really is amazing.

All my favorite parts of this album remind me of Loscil.

Barbican show last night was great. I had no idea he was so funny and self-deprecating, a very likeable stage presence.

I'm so resistant to this kind of stuff almost on principle - the virtuoso genius surrounded by literally hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of gear on stage, the absolute tastefulness of it (it's Windham Hill techno - you don't get to like this and hate on Liz Story) - but I'm always bludgeoned into submission by how much I like the music in the end.

The minimalistic Encores 1 EP that was originally the exclusive vinyl with the Rough Trade edition is now out digitally and could be the first of a series (since he had more than a hundred songs/ideas for the album)

imho, it sounds great but overall it's a rather toned down + subtle affair (especially without the visuals) & not at all as exciting as the concert I saw in 2018 :-/

Well just saw the film and well, dang, that was something. I find myself having a lot of his albums but never really consciously giving a close ear but based on the performance and the film, reading all the reports earlier in the thread about West Coast dates in the past really is triggering retroactive FOMO.

Some cognitive dissonance at hearing a dub album by Nils Frahm within a week of Lee Scratch Perry's death... but also the new Nils Frahm/FS Blumm collaboration is pretty good!

I got talking to him briefly after his show in Luxembourg a couple of years ago. I told him I was a fan of dub and that, among other things, I really liked the dubbier elements of his work.

Getting a Stars of the Lid vibe from "Seagull Scene"

Antwerp: he played 6 long pieces that weren't necessarily recogniseable from his albums (except the encore) but the point is to see him build the journey on stage - masterful.
