also, less from the "sexist" category and more from the "what the fuck is wrong with you," apparently said comments section goes and calls this one 19-year-old girl (who lives nowhere near Bushwick) a "dumb fuck" for asking what was going on and whether she should be discouraged from writing because of it, A+ everybody, fantastic work

what post is this i didn't see the link in the thread?

Frustrating to see a not-always-bad-writer-in-his-time Suddenly After Years Of Playing The Game become aware of systemic culture problems like he didn't have a sentient friend to lend him an Adorno text in his early 20s and then in typical white man's burden steez start blaming the people on the lowest rung whilst celebrating his own ""enlightened"" stance, yo guys I got a job, but I am a cancer Ott OTM

personally I'm still stuck on "frustrating to see that all of this has resulted in calling a 19-year-old girl who writes on her own blog a 'dumb fuck'". this isn't about "not liking critics attacking other critics," this is about the fact that this entire godforsaken thing has now devolved into straight-up bullying of teenage writers with blogs by grown-ass industry men at least in their thirties. (also, for what it's worth, bullying teenage *female* writers.)

katherine, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 05:06 (ten years ago) link

wow at that link.

of the reasons to not be a music critic, dealing with those discussions has gotta number among them.

also i'm really impressed by how far he's taking the "discover the network" grassy knoll stuff:

"There is no way to confirm the direct involvement of rumored silent partner Marc Geiger of WME, but he is publicly on record as being Pitchfork’s agent for a number of years now. He is publicly on record as a board member of TopspinMedia, which shares venture capital advisement with Redpoint, a venture capital firm that financed SpinMedia (SPIN). He is further part of a succession of UCSD music directors and San Diego-area promoters along with Bill Silva and Larry Weintraub who are using music as an inroad to corral youth attention and sell it to marketers."

the elders of zion have gotta fit in somewhere around here, right?

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 05:08 (ten years ago) link

say what you will about Ott's stuff, at least it's an ethos - having read through that Collapse Board thread I've come out with absolutely no idea what point Everett True is trying to make.

Actually, I was spelling out what I thought was a Big Lebowski reference but sure, I'll take any reason to be done with this.

yeah Haimgate was the first time i'd even heard of Collapse Board. the Ott post refers to discussion on the Collapse Board facebook group, which i guess means that Collapse Board is not a message board but some kind of poorly named publication, and there's actually a Collapse Board board?

Scott Creney has Ott's back on the Collapseboard thread. They should form the Justice League of Self-Aggrandising Belligerent Dudes.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 12:09 (ten years ago) link

Scott Creney is the worst.

the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 12:10 (ten years ago) link

Seems essential to me that if you're going to tell all the other, employable music writers that they're doing it wrong then your own writing should be dynamite. Otherwise, pthrrrrt.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 12:13 (ten years ago) link

yeah...the way Creosote keeps contrasting the problems of the current landscape with 'the way things used to be done and SHOULD be done' is a sly way of making his contributions to the business seem more significant than they actually were. it's right out of the Bob Lefsetz playbook.

I never found out what this amazing move taht was going to mean that readership of Pitchfork eclipsed taht of Spin & Rolling Stone combined was. Unless it was the move over to covering non-indie divas that I read about by coincidence in another thread. But I'm not sure what the timescale there was & it sounded like people who had been reading Pitchfork might actually drop it for doing so anyway.

What was this amazing coup and how well did it work. I'm not sure if Pitchfork is a household world r if it only appeals to music geeks anyway. also not getting what the story is with Ott and them was there a parting of the ways & who called it & for what reason?

Nice to see that the great self-described Legend has teamed up with Ott in an attempt to stand up for the right of whatever. Not been a big fan of Jerry, is that ever? Or was he the sole reason that Sub Pop types broke through, I mean no Everett no Nirvana or Hole omigod etc. That the guy went from peddling indie twee to the oh so rugged sound of Minneapolis always did stick in the craw rather didn't it?

Stevolende, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 13:58 (ten years ago) link

Sorry should have maybe said that Everett True = The Legend = (non pseudonym )Jerry Thackeray (mere pseud?).
who single handedly invented Sarah Twee pop, grunge and all points thereafter didn't he?

Stevolende, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:06 (ten years ago) link

feeling kind of wistful now that ATP is over, picturing the finale concert when ILX finally shuts down, naughty by nature getting the last song, a remake of OPP, ott nodding on stage between treach and vin rock, even the most flagrant otter-haters in the audience, like queen latifah in the original video, grinning sheepishly about being down with OTT when it gets down to it. chris ott hooray, ho, hey, ho!

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:09 (ten years ago) link

guys i'm sorry i lost my critic trading cards--can someone tell me who the fuck everett true is?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:12 (ten years ago) link

I think he's a Legend that got fired from the NME back before it became quite as bad as it did later.

Think he helped push a wheelchair bound Kurt Cobain onstage at Reading or something too.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:16 (ten years ago) link

big shaker in late-80s Melody Maker, introduced Cobain to Courtney, was the dude Sub Pop paid for to fly over and do a feature on Seattle in MM, which arguably led to the ~alternative revolution~ of the early-mid '90s, later did Careless Talk Costs Lives, now lives in Brisbane and whinges on the internet

also had early singles on Creation

the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:27 (ten years ago) link

Incidentally I just discovered taht Everett True was actually initially a supposedly every-man comic character who debuted in the early 230th century and had been revived for a comics catalogue the year taht Jerry Thackray was fired from the NME and thought the Legend penname was too attached to taht publication.

is several of the comic strips featuring him.

I can't be awake yetor I'd know that the town that everybody loves in the title of the oral history on grunge is Seattle not Minneapolis. Can't think why I'd confuse the two.
