I think I posted this upthread but my favorite two announcements ever were:

"Attention passengers we are being held in the station due to a delay in service."

"Thank you for your inconvenience."

A tautology and a malapropism. Or something. What are the appropriate rhetorical descriptions?

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 04:12 (ten years ago) link

I love the "moving momentarily" announcement made several times over 10-15 minutes

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 04:56 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it's like you're in some kind of superscale model demonstrating Zeno's Paradox or something.

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 05:00 (ten years ago) link

Also what's with the repeated bing bongs with the doors not quite closing? Are there actually people standing on the threshold hedging their bets that are keeping the doors from closing or is it some kind of conductor fakeout, playing for just a little more time?

The Glam Of That All The Way From Memphis Man! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 05:02 (ten years ago) link

I get really anxious when they do the "boong" like they're about to make an announcement but then no announcement comes

four weeks pass...

Okay, so seriously. That poster for Showtime with Don Cheadle in a blindfold and William H. Macy grunting at the camera: at the bottom, Don Cheadle's torso ends a good half-inch before everybody else's. It's easily missed in the darkness, but, Jesus, that's sloppy. Next to it on the G platform at Nassau, we also saw a poster for the new Ice Cube movie where the inept rookie has been really awkwardly shrunk by Photoshop, I guess to show that he's out of his league asking out Ice Cube's daughter! (or whatever) but I swear they could fit two of his head inside of Ice Cube's head and it just looks bad. Then there was a Seamless poster showing how you could order everything on your phone, the numbers didn't add up, and even had things where one 4.99 smoothie totaled up to 6.49 or something. I mean, how hard would it have been to get that right?

I've been looking for a thread to post this, and I guess this is as good as any:

It's actually a visually very good ad, but it's also creepy as fuck and sounds fascistic

due to signal problems at jay st-metrotech, we will sit here for 45 minutes. you may want to take the B57 bus instead -- although it is unlikely that all of you will fit -- but as soon as you leave this train will depart

mookieproof, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 16:47 (ten years ago) link

i just missed that apparently

Anyone else notice the "take a sample, take a look" incense-and-comic-book guy in the 14th St./6th Ave tunnel getting a little more intense? Yesterday I swear he was going on like "I don't care what you do, you can be a fucking slut, sell your body, take a sample, take a sample, take a look..."

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:03 (ten years ago) link

Due to blah blah blah, the last stop on this Manhattan-bound J train will be...Marcy Avenue. Which is in Brooklyn. Enjoy your walk across the bridge in the cold!

Just saw that getting off at Hoyt-Schermerhorn. May have to take 23 to transfer to 7 at TS to get back to Queens. Which is probably at log easier than what others will have to do.

On the 7 now after catching 5 at Borough Hall . As I passed through the Fulton Mall on my way to the station I espied a vehicle with NCC-1701-D U.S.S. Enterprise painted on the side.

mom on uptown rush hour 3 train yesterday with Cadillac-sized baby carriage

die, asshole

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:35 (ten years ago) link

Just a couple of points on that, as someone who occasionally has to bring a stroller on the subway:

1) "Rush Hour" in NYC is like a 2.5 hour window in the morning and another 2.5 hour window in the evening, minimum. In fact, some lines are crowded throughout the day, so it's pretty hard to avoid travel during "rush hour."

2) Some moms/dads have jobs they have to go to, requiring them to first drop off their babies somewhere (daycare etc.)

3) You can't just "fold the stroller" because it's pretty much impossible to carry a baby and a folded stroller simultaneously.

4) While I use and generally support the use of smaller "subway strollers" on public transit, when a baby is very young, it has to lie flat and hence has to be in an ordinary carriage-style stroller instead of a folding stroller.

That said, if the baby was really small, I suppose it could have been brought in a carrier, depending on where the mom was going with the baby.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:46 (ten years ago) link

This was 6pm prime human-crush 7th Ave line.

If all that is true, getting on a rush-hour train that is packed anyway... woman still needs to live somewhere else. Just solipsism at its worst.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:06 (ten years ago) link

Plus she was essentially blocking a door and of course glued to her fucking phone.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:07 (ten years ago) link

right, because its not solipsism to believe that people should "live somewhere else" rather than inconvenience you on a train
