this tourney is kind of a drag

Euler, Monday, 16 December 2013 23:23 (ten years ago) link

Hopefully enough of people think that so that I can come in and clean up.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 00:18 (ten years ago) link

Would I be a sucker if I actually shelled out for this game? I have a Magneto cover that's going to expire in just under two days, then a while bunch of covers a few days after that.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 04:14 (ten years ago) link

You're always a sucker if you shell out for any F2P game honestly, but if you do it, do it as a gesture of support for a quality product rather than starting a gambling addiction. Also, wait until the last day possible, you never know when you'll suddenly be able to get Hero Points.

Nhex, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 04:21 (ten years ago) link

LOL a gambling addiction that won't return any remuneration. Ok, if I'm in a bind, I'm willing to send my Bullseye packing.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 04:53 (ten years ago) link

Got invisible woman on a heroic recruit card tonight. Wasn't expecting that.

Jeff, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 05:18 (ten years ago) link

Points in this game are the only real currency. Don't listen to the haters.

mh, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 05:19 (ten years ago) link

I don't know if I agree with this. MTX like this typically exist to save the user grinding time. That's the case here -- you could buy 100 points, or you could place in the top X number in two tournaments. One of these requires a lot of upkeep. One costs $X. You're paying to more quickly access the game. If, say, they set it up *just so* that you got that card but had no spot for it and had to pay but they used the ruse of "oh, it's random!" then yes, that would be a "sucker" making move.

Point is: it's there to let you accelerate without the grind, but the grind is also fun.

I'd say fuck bullseye anyway tho. He's a boob.

dudes who make this game hiring for a prod now

want to move into prod in the next 18 months or so

in a real funk @ my job atm

omg want to apply so bad

is cambridge mass nice? i'm canadian i don't know anything

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 16:12 (ten years ago) link

go for it!

we're allocating green cards for marvel puzzle quest development? I guess I can agree that's crucial

mh, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 16:40 (ten years ago) link

i agree, go for it, what's the worst that can happen? life is already crushing disappointment

the game is straight-up designed to even have a grind/acceleration eased by paying unlimited amounts of cash, so yes you = sucker for buying into it. i'm not even 100% against it if the game is good, but let's be honest about it, it's horrific business model akin to gambling. you're not even buying cards directly, you're buying slot machine tokens!

i don't see this in the same category as "pay x to unlock features you'd normally get later in the game" since there is no endpoint in this model. (this is merely slightly distasteful rather than evil)

Nhex, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 16:41 (ten years ago) link

if you offered me two red rags for ten bucks, i would likely take you up on it.

let me clarify

lol no canadian i know who has moved to the states for work thus far has gotten anything more than a temporary work visa
green cards not flowing for vg development

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 16:49 (ten years ago) link

can we work a swap? I kind of wanted to live in canada for a while

mh, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 16:51 (ten years ago) link

forks, you're a disgusting pervert

Nhex, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 17:09 (ten years ago) link

lol there's ILG's new motto.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 17:53 (ten years ago) link

immortality is mine

I'm starting to get the feeling of why am I playing this, and to what end with this game. Still very addictive though.

Jeff, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 21:45 (ten years ago) link

Ragnorak is really stupidly strong, isn't he? they've GOT to nerf him, right? meanwhile I want Rag cards so badly, forks otm

I have been steadily accumulating Moonstone cards, have her up to 2-2-4 now. not sure what I think of her yet though? her countdown steal seems useful but it's at 17 black. her red blast is getting useful. kinda thinking she's like a captain america, kinda general purpose. curious though.

Euler, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 21:52 (ten years ago) link

Moonstone might be useful? Great, that's another roster spot I'll have to create.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link

somehow got her at 5/5/3, maybe wish i specced for more black but... eh, she has a decent red blast, that benefits from hoarding reds on the screen, and... not... much... else. decent hp, decent damage, nothing to write home about.

she's about 10-20 levels behind my lead 4 guys (wolv, daken, thor, IM40) so I use her when I'm out of health packs and need another person.

More useful against PVE and countdown guys due to the black ability, but, the 17 cost makes it kinda out of reach (and you can probably do much better with so many other characters with 17 of any color gem)

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:01 (ten years ago) link

the purple switch ability could be useful to fuck with enemy specials? haven't used her yet except to tank but as I steadily accumulate cards, I'm keeping an open mind

I have three venom covers in my cache, is it worth working him up? I've sold a zillion covers but I'm having second thoughts (but blah @ 1 star heroes since they get so hard to level)

Euler, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:06 (ten years ago) link

strong venom can be a total pain to play against, but i'm not sure how good he is on offense.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:09 (ten years ago) link

i was getting really tough opponents on "no holds" (all maxed thors + typically a maxed I40 or cstorm at least) then the lightning rounds came around again. so i did the usual -- win one fight, then play the next with the weakest team i can muster, resign, and yield, then wait to be taken down a few more notches.

two rounds of this, and now i'm getting matched up with teams in "no holds" where the avg level is 33.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:11 (ten years ago) link

feel sorta terrible about how effective it is

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:13 (ten years ago) link

moonstones purple is totally useless

venom on offense is pretty wack, good pairing with a well leveled spiderman tho

i was using moonstone for a bit with bullseye and daken in the dark avengers tourney to good effect. against a daken or a bullseye i could typically use purple to take out an enemy tile and also do some damage. rarely got to use the red on the other hand.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:22 (ten years ago) link

Moonstone's purple is good against attack tile characters like Doom or Daken, since you know what color it's gonna be (unlikely say, Iron Man 35's defense tiles or Captain America's various abilitises). I have her maxed out but I'm not sure I'll get around to her for a while, still working on cap after hitting my current max on Iron Man 40 (right now L79). Might switch over to Daken or Wolvie, they seem more usable in the short term.

Nhex, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:27 (ten years ago) link

my wolvie (astonishing) has 5 green cards, so feral claws costs 4; he is a savage beast now. wish I had a daken to team him with; well, I have one but he's only level 8 (after I sold a bunch of covers).

I'd spend real money for a permanent heal speed upgrade; when I hit it with my top team and then get bashed, either I run health packs or I wait, and the latter means I put it down for a few hours. so I can see paying e.g. $5 to speed that up...as long as it's not just to get a finite number of health packs

like I'd like to support the developers by giving them real money for the game but I don't want to buy scratch off lottery cards and get a bunch of black widow moderns for my moolah

Euler, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:44 (ten years ago) link

Kind of regretting my decision to sell off all my Classic Hawkeye covers, now that I'm stuck on some Maggia missions.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:48 (ten years ago) link

kind of agree w/you Euler

haha don't worry Leee you'll get a million back in token draws soon enough

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 02:10 (ten years ago) link

running daken/wolvie/modern hawkeye now. only need to heal when i screw up and let a thor get the best of me.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 03:31 (ten years ago) link

Was #2 in the No Holds Barred tourney this morning - wanted that spot, since I'd rather 3 Grey Widow cards rather than one Invisible Woman - but of course, by luck or by tanking, I shot up to #1 lol

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:34 (ten years ago) link

This was five minutes before the end of the tourney btw. Damn you, work interfering with my MPQ rankings

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:35 (ten years ago) link

I didn't realize it was ending so early, finished in the top 50... got a black widow classic blue (cool), and a black widow MODERN purple? wtf? i feel bamboozled

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 15:06 (ten years ago) link

so to make sure i'm clear on the clover strategy, i don't throw any matches in the no holds tourney, but throw all sorts of matches in the lightning rds?

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 18:16 (ten years ago) link

Man, this game is invading my dreams! I dreamed that I made two consecutive 5-matches, I was so happy.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 18:27 (ten years ago) link

will m -- you win one match in the lightning just to get in the game. then you play a second match with a very bad team, and yield.

this means that your very bad team will be the one others will go up against, and they will pick away even more of your points.

and this in turn will give you way easier matches in the main tourney.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 19:03 (ten years ago) link

this is an interesting strategy, will try

i think it works. but I don't throw matches deliberately, I just fight using as underpowered teams as possible. even if you win, you'll still get matched up with lower levels. it's not a bad system actually - gets people to use more of their weak characters, gives more chances to noobs to fight

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 20:25 (ten years ago) link

i've never forfeited, though in some cases I lost the first chance and won the second, still ended up getting easier fights in the main tourney. Downside: less points, as you'll get players lower down the ladder.

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 20:26 (ten years ago) link

Is that a viable strategy for all PVP events (i.e. does that include SHIELD Training)?

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 20:27 (ten years ago) link

yes

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 20:28 (ten years ago) link

Awesome! Will try that tomorrow night, when I don't have a life again.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link

one of us! one of us!

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 20:48 (ten years ago) link

lol never thought that was in question, but thanks!

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 21:48 (ten years ago) link

Definitely coming around to the church of Daken, my lvl 47 is tearing it up
