Er... this isn't so much a "mix" as just a nicely sequenced bunch of tracks that hold together in a cool way:

Mostly epic/creepy/jazzy/avant stuff of all genres.

Hi DJ's, I need some advice on whether to buy direct or belt drive turntable. My main purpose is to listen to records and convert them to digital, but there's a chance that I'll use it to DJ in the future (when I have the money to buy a second one). Do you think belt drive sounds that much better than direct? If that's the case then I'll be willing to sacrifice the prospect of vinyl DJ-ing.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 4 January 2014 23:58 (ten years ago) link

if you're going to want to DJ with it get a direct drive. Sound pretty much comes down to needle choice for me, but I'm no audiophile.

Clay, Sunday, 5 January 2014 00:04 (ten years ago) link

I think only hi-fi snobs care about how much better belt drive sounds than direct drive, but even the worst party DJ reaps the benefit of direct drive.

If you want a win-win situation, there's some company that does upgrades to Technics 1200s.

Actually apparently there's a few.

dan selzer, Sunday, 5 January 2014 00:06 (ten years ago) link

Wow thanks for the quick responses! The 1200 is slightly outside my budget and I imagine it'd be a hassle to do a digital conversion (what with the soundcards, cables, etc) so I'm eyeing this item: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002S1CJ2Q. What do you think?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 5 January 2014 00:31 (ten years ago) link

One can make the argument that nothing beats a real 1200, that they're worth the extra money, that you shouldn't need to spend anything on a soundcard (no mic in on your computer?) etc etc, but i'd also mention that that LP is generally pretty well regarded when it comes to cheaper 1200 clones w/ extra features.

If you have the money, the next AT up has even more features: http://turntablelab.com/collections/turntables-for-djing-alpha/products/audio-technica-at-lp1240-usb-dj-direct-drive-turntable

being able to control the start and stop speeds is pretty cool, though I'm not sure why anyone would want a DJ turntable with a slow start.

xp i think you would be happier with a belt-drive tt. for one it's way easier to change/match speeds. i have a numark ttxusb i use for conversion. it's supposed to be fine for djing too, but it's fucking heavy and the plastic tonearm catch snapped off a little while ago. also i don't use the built-in usb conversion. if i could go back i might get one of those audio technicas but i'm still seeing used 1200s for pretty good prices here and there too...

From the Album No Baby for You! (Matt P), Sunday, 5 January 2014 08:47 (ten years ago) link

What do you mean a belt-drive is easier to change/match speeds? I don't know what match speeds means, but most decent belt drives don't you have to remove the platter and change the belt to change the speed? That doesn't sound easier.

dan selzer, Sunday, 5 January 2014 14:36 (ten years ago) link

@dan: do you mean I can convert vinyl to digital with 1200 without soundcard?

@matt: with belt drive, I'm afraid I'd regret it someday when I want to DJ with vinyls.

oof i'm dumb, i meant direct drive!!

I mean most computers have a mic input, no? All macs do.

dan selzer, Monday, 6 January 2014 02:15 (ten years ago) link

Um, yes. But if the pc's soundcard is mediocre surely it affects the converted song's quality, right?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 6 January 2014 02:25 (ten years ago) link

What are you, Steely Dan?

dan selzer, Monday, 6 January 2014 02:51 (ten years ago) link

internal soundcards can pick up a lot of noise. it might be noticeable in those art gallery gigs, you know? seriously though it can sound pretty shitty depending on your computer. i don't think it's the quality of the sound card it's the fact that you're plugging right into a very noisy machine.

From the Album No Baby for You! (Matt P), Monday, 6 January 2014 03:48 (ten years ago) link

@dan: I'm planning to use the ripped songs for DJ gigs, you know. I've listened to many shitty vinyl rips that's simply unplayable in a club. for example many levon vincent's tracks. they sound very thin, no dynamics and clarity. now I don't know if it's the soundcard, cartridge, cable, or whatever.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 6 January 2014 03:56 (ten years ago) link

that was me on an old pc a few years ago, it might sound fine on yours, do what works for you, try things out and fuck "requirements" for sure. ~audio opinions~ xp

From the Album No Baby for You! (Matt P), Monday, 6 January 2014 03:58 (ten years ago) link

ripping your own stuff can sound really good, rips you find elsewhere aren't always done with quality in mind. i suspect that's the intention so you'll actually pay for the record if you want to play it out.

From the Album No Baby for You! (Matt P), Monday, 6 January 2014 04:02 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, internal soundcards/mics suck, but I agree w/ Matt that that's probably not the cause of the noise you're hearing. Probably recording at too low a volume.

But you can upgrade soundcards. For 50/60 bucks you can get an external audio interface that's probably as good or better than what's built into the AT turntables.

You also have to think about pre-amps. I'm assuming you have a simple DJ mixer of some sort. That can also help you make sure you've got your gains set well enough. I'm pretty confident that I can take the output of a 1200 through a DJ mixer into the mic input on a mac and record something that will sound fine in a club.

Or just get the LP120.

dan selzer, Monday, 6 January 2014 04:16 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it's either 1200 or LP120. It's win-win. The only problem is that the LP120 costs twice the retail price here.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 6 January 2014 04:20 (ten years ago) link

what do decent 1200s go for these days?

saw a dude who wanted $1800 for serato in-box, rane mixer, two 1200s, asking $1800. seemed exorbitant.

the late great, Monday, 6 January 2014 04:22 (ten years ago) link

Serato is expensive. Ranes are expensive (and worth it). 1200s are all over the place. Just saw one on craigslist for 150 w/ mixer. May be a scam. Otherwise 400 to 800. Less if you're lucky?

dan selzer, Monday, 6 January 2014 04:26 (ten years ago) link

hm i guess maybe not such a bad deal after all?

the late great, Monday, 6 January 2014 04:28 (ten years ago) link

The cheapest used Rane 57 on NYC craigslist right now is 669$

I think it should be less than 1800. Package deal and all that. Offer him 1500. Depends on which Serato, which Rane exactly etc.

dan selzer, Monday, 6 January 2014 04:45 (ten years ago) link

$1800 is pretty reasonable, assuming:

Serato: $600
Rane: $500
1200's: $800

Speaking about serato, what's really the advantage of that other than having millions of songs at your finger tips? OK people say you get the vinyl experience but why is it better than "CDJ experience"? I don't scratch or anything.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 6 January 2014 04:46 (ten years ago) link

i dunno i guess it just seems more challenging (and therefore fun) to me

the late great, Monday, 6 January 2014 05:10 (ten years ago) link

I personally never got Serato. I'm just as happy using a Pioneer CDJ and I've never wanted to bring my expensive and fragile computer to a gross bar or club. If I'm going to be playing digital files, I'm just as happy using the CDJ.

dan selzer, Monday, 6 January 2014 05:36 (ten years ago) link

where's the challenge? I've never tried it so I don't know but surely softwares make everything easier.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 6 January 2014 06:04 (ten years ago) link

i'm sure it will be more challenging than traktor

throw two seconds of something in front to confuse the matcher ime. altered speed / pitch works too and if something is vinyl-only it won't find it.
