The Eno / Ferry thing was settled a long time ago, was it not? Separate polls.

Put me down for They Might Be Giants. (would enough people care about a TMBG poll?)

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:37 (ten years ago) link

Where is the Classic Rock Canon poll? Having missed out on a lot of the history of this, I understand why we want to coordinate the timing so's not to have 6 million ballot polls flooding the board at once, but don't it seem like we could have one start at least every week?

Ynysddu is the best policy (but tread Caerphilly) (staggerlee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:40 (ten years ago) link

There's a hiatus while the big EOY poll is happening...normal service will return at the start February I guess.

Two days left to vote in the ILM EOY Poll! (seandalai), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:47 (ten years ago) link

There's a break from these while the end-of-year polls run their course. The list should pick back up in February.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:48 (ten years ago) link

There's a pause during the big end-of-year polls, regular polls will begin again by February.

Euler, Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:52 (ten years ago) link

what they said, something something February

channel 9's meaty urologist (WilliamC), Thursday, 16 January 2014 18:24 (ten years ago) link

Any reason we can't do one a week starting February?

Ynysddu is the best policy (but tread Caerphilly) (staggerlee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 18:49 (ten years ago) link

Most poll-runners have been leaving the voting open for 10-14 days to flog as many ballots as possible out of ILM. Some overlap is cool -- one poll open for voting while another one is rolling out its results -- but any efforts to put these polls on a timetable have been met with an unspoken "yes that's fine for everyone else but I'm going to run my poll this way." I'm not going to play the heavy -- that's the quickest way for these to grind to a screeching stop, imo.

Bah.

plus personally if there's too many polls just wham wham wham one after another I kinda get exhausted by the whole thing, even if it's bands I like

Veg, are you volunteering for George Michael/WHAM! poll?

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:00 (ten years ago) link

nope

i'm terrified enough that I volunteered for Pearl Jam in like, 2015...ain't no way I'm volunteering for anything else EVER until that's over & it hasn't killed me

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:02 (ten years ago) link

It's really not too hard if you just throw all the ballots in your recycle bin and make up the results you want to see.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:04 (ten years ago) link

(Just kidding about that, btw. All my polls is legit.)

classic rock nomination/discussion thread coming very soon

― ol' Wrink P's thinkpiece (some dude), Wednesday, January 1, 2014 9:45 AM (2 weeks ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

still! it's gonna be a slow burner because it seems like the big genre-spanning polls seem to take longer for people to put together ballots for (as opposed to just looking at one band's discography and quickly being able to ID favorites). so i would say, don't mind my slow progress and just proceed with any single artist polls in the queue, and we can worry about whether results rollouts overlap or anything later if it looks likely.

Algerian Horsebeater (some dude), Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:08 (ten years ago) link

as far as I'm concerned, you could start the discussion thread at any time & it'll be it's own board

i.e. I listened to the .38 Special greatest hits album today

Euler, Thursday, 16 January 2014 22:00 (ten years ago) link

lol I did the same a couple weeks ago.

we are twentieth century foxes

Euler, Thursday, 16 January 2014 22:08 (ten years ago) link

i don't wanna start the thread until i've finished the 'starting list' of a few hundred songs that we can then add to (or subtract from if there's any debatable inclusions).

Algerian Horsebeater (some dude), Thursday, 16 January 2014 23:19 (ten years ago) link

I'm v excited for it

oooh that reminds me I need to wash the Trans Am....

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Friday, 17 January 2014 01:42 (ten years ago) link

Veg, are you volunteering for George Michael/WHAM! poll?

Ismael Klata traded out his front-man/front-women idea and change it to this:

i would be up for doing a No Wave poll, or is that too esoteric?

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Monday, 20 January 2014 21:49 (ten years ago) link

i feel like that would be fun, because it's an area i've always been curious about, and theoretically it's a narrow enough categorization that i could probably listen to all the nominated records as a crash course in no wave and be able to vote.

Algerian Horsebeater (some dude), Monday, 20 January 2014 23:01 (ten years ago) link

can we skip all the polls between the next poll and my poll?

flopson, Monday, 20 January 2014 23:08 (ten years ago) link

super down for no wave

flopson, Monday, 20 January 2014 23:08 (ten years ago) link

too esoteric? i mean we're doing a Sightings poll...

flopson, Monday, 20 January 2014 23:09 (ten years ago) link

it's pretty cool that we should be hitting the Outkast poll right around the time they'll be touring. it's fun when the timing of the polls feels accidentally fortuitous, like when the Neptunes poll went down circa the Pharrell comeback last summer.

Algerian Horsebeater (some dude), Monday, 20 January 2014 23:26 (ten years ago) link

i am not sure that raymond understood what this thread was about btw cos shorly after he said he wanted to do a sightings poll he went ahead and did this:

Who needs a clever title for vicious industrial noise rock par excellence? The SIGHTINGS studio album poll

oh wait, see the last post in that thread

tench and pike, scaup and snipe (NickB), Monday, 20 January 2014 23:28 (ten years ago) link

I'd vote in No Wave. As with all genre polls someone is going to have to do border policing.

the right stfu (seandalai), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 01:36 (ten years ago) link

I still think a Sightings poll is too niche for this kind of thing. I mean, only 15 people voted in a simple one-thread albums poll.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 01:39 (ten years ago) link

xp - I'd probably go with what is covered in the Marc Masters book and limit it to a certain time period + reissues, but no Daydream Nation or Golden Palominos from the late 80s, for example

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 01:52 (ten years ago) link

I'd vote in No Wave. JF otm re Sightings.

g simmel, Saturday, 1 February 2014 15:09 (ten years ago) link

i just found myself waiting for the laundry to finish and listening to 'Eye in the Sky' and realizing how creepy that song sounds when you actually sing it. In other words, bring on the classic rock!

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 February 2014 15:46 (ten years ago) link

In the meantime, I think the Roxy/Ferry poll should go forward along with the classic rock poll, since some dude is going to have a period of determining the pool of songs. Charlie H, ready to roll with that?

charlie h, Sunday, 2 February 2014 03:09 (ten years ago) link

I'd vote in a no wave poll.

Sorry if I've misunderstood how polls work. I'm a little nervous about my second sightings poll, actually - there doesn't seem to be much interest yet. Maybe I care about shit that's just too obscure for ILM?

Viceroy, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 22:54 (ten years ago) link

Perhaps this has been discussed before, but would be people interested in a DFA poll? If there is interest, I would volunteer for that.

Broadcast! Might there be enough interest in a Broadcast poll? Small discography perhaps, but not really that small.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 00:21 (four years ago) link

i hardly know broadcast but i like the idea of being forced to listen to them in order to produce a ballot for a poll.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 13 August 2019 09:04 (four years ago) link

^ I dig it! :)

The Replacements was another that came up elsewhere recently. I'd happily crunch numbers for that too if no one else has a burning desire to do so.

Wish I was in a better position to vote in the Cat Power one. Very interested to see how that turns out but not quite able to construct a well-informed ballot.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Tuesday, 13 August 2019 09:28 (four years ago) link

Would be very much up for a Broadcast poll.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 13 August 2019 09:58 (four years ago) link

i'll be happy to do the 00's poll over August/early September if we're keen? -- imago

So this is definitely next? I think I'll turn my mind to such matters in anticipation...

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 08:10 (four years ago) link

Is the 00’s poll albums or tracks?

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 22:27 (four years ago) link

Both!

imago, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 22:42 (four years ago) link

I love love love Broadcast but yeah the catalog is too small to warrant it imo

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 22:59 (four years ago) link

At a quick count, 143 tracks in Broadcast discography, no problem putting together a top 50.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:11 (four years ago) link

I mean, I can already see myself getting annoyed when 'Phantom' and 'Ritual / Looking In' don't make it.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

yeah and like a quarter of those tracks are interstitial things that are around a minute long

xp

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

I mean fine, do whatever, I wouldn't feel compelled to vote in it

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

Smaller discographies don't necessarily warrant a "Top 50" unless the actual results demand it. For instance, when I ran the Sleater-Kinney poll (a discography which at the time was around 100 tracks), the spread was enough that I had a little more than 50 tracks with enough points=two #1's, which I had set as the floor for ranking.

frustration and wonky passion (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:24 (four years ago) link

Total points equivalent to two first-place votes? Oddly enough I now see I cut my last one off at almost exactly that same point (#60 in that case) without consciously applying such a criterion, so that seems intuitively 'right'. There were only ever going to be about 100 real contenders (from ~170) amongst Go-Betweens tracks, but it seemed to work okay.

I cut B&S at #60 as well, but I distinctly remember that being where the number of votes dropped below 10. That was apparently equivalent to ~4 #1s, as the number of votes was freakishly high!

As long as one can cobble together say... a top 30, using similar yardsticks, it may still be worthwhile. Besides, I secretly feel like polls are less about stats than the excuse to listen to and talk about a given artist far, far too much!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 22 August 2019 01:40 (four years ago) link

i did: POLL Will Tear Us Apart – ILM Artist Poll #86 - JOY DIVISION – New Order solo or other groups Poll (aka the Electronic poll) – a NEW ORDER (#37) supplement poll --- Results Thread

even tho there were a fair amount of votes, i don't think the poll was very successful. as far as how many should be counted down? i think it depends on the results, tho i also had set boundaries like at least five votes for most polls. i really couldn't do more than a Top 20 for Joy Division as number 25 only had two votes so i didn't expand.

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 August 2019 02:28 (four years ago) link

Looking closer at the S-K thread, I see I actually used something above 90 points as the floor, with 50th place having 6 votes and 97 points.
