"You can't stop me because what are you going to do, not have butts?"

xpost hannibal is like if fincher was an interior decorator. ITS SO GOOD content-wise, and rad to look at

zodiac levels of holy shit LOOK at that pause-moments

i still haven't gotten around to seeing Hannibal -- basing a whole episode around a moderately popular NBC show that's been on for one season, really? that's like if instead of having a great throwaway gag about The Cape they actually let Abed make an entire episode about The Cape. Hannibal doesn't even half a half-red/half-white logo like the Community logo in that ep, does it? what was that about?

some dude, Saturday, 11 January 2014 14:29 (ten years ago) link

i suppose Community may have accurately surmised at this point that most of their audience is people whose remotes are broken and the TV is stuck on NBC. kinda lol but mostly sad that the season premiere preceded by months of "Harmon's back!" excitement got lower ratings than the last season premiere that was preceded by months of "Harmon's gone!" outrage.

some dude, Saturday, 11 January 2014 14:36 (ten years ago) link

very different timing for both premieres but in both cases community beat the newer more friendly nbc sitcoms in the ratings that week

did you watch the episode? read the thread? plenty to laugh at, plenty of references to recognize even if you haven't seen hannibal.

and yeah the important thing is community's relative standing to its peers in the NBC thursday crypt

if dan harmon can avoid posting naked drawings of castmembers on his tumblr or disappearing for a month, i think the chance are pretty good for a season 6. I mean, NBC has to renew something and its hitting that syndication gravy train. as for a movie, that's up to kickstarter.

this isn't a "omg have you seen hannibal" image they gave to all the blogs, this is a "omg have you seen a procedural about a serial killer since the mid-90s" image

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:39 (ten years ago) link

i watched and enjoyed the episode but the whole time i was confused about what it was parodying and had no idea until i read the thread

some dude, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:40 (ten years ago) link

i'll admit i didn't recognize the red dragon credits and while they're not particularly iconic they're undoubtedly cheaper than seven-style credits

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:41 (ten years ago) link

i mean i LIKE that the show doesn't trade exclusively in spoonfed Star Wars-level pop culture references but My Dinner With Andre refs >>>>> this

some dude, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:42 (ten years ago) link

i wouldn't say its up to the level of that episode, sure, but if you got confused because they were paying tribute to a popular filmmaking aesthetic rather than one specific movie that's on you

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:46 (ten years ago) link

it sounds like you're mad no one said "ITS LIKE ZODIAC!"

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:47 (ten years ago) link

i thought the montage at the end where life goes on and no one is certain who the culprit was while the ben folds song played felt like a direct homage to zodiac

Mordy , Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:48 (ten years ago) link

iirc there was also a photo of a dragon-tattoo-ish punk lady on a locker early on

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:49 (ten years ago) link

did they not really deal w/ torture serial killer flicks in the ep or did i miss some references (hostel/saw/etc)?

Mordy , Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:50 (ten years ago) link

nah it was pretty much the post-seven brand

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:51 (ten years ago) link

well i got all the stuff that was broad genre parody but i'm assuming there's some Hannibal-specific stuff that went over my head -- again i have no idea how much.

some dude, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:51 (ten years ago) link

in any event it felt like they wanted to do something else in the vein of the Law & Order ep or the conspiracy theory episode but didn't have as strong a hook for it, i dunno.

some dude, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:52 (ten years ago) link

i've never seen an ep of hannibal fwiw and didn't catch any refs to it

Mordy , Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:53 (ten years ago) link

i dunno, the stuff vg ref'd up thread - "rain, classical music, weird colors" - are all fincher tropes too

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:53 (ten years ago) link

if i hadn't read the thread first i would have primarily assumed zodiac, considering the show consisted of attack sequences followed by threatening letters, paranoid detectives in glum settings and an ambiguous "will we ever know" montage

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:55 (ten years ago) link

but if this is all like hannibal too, then shit i gotta see me some hannibal

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:56 (ten years ago) link

are creepy greenhouses a film noir thing, or am i just thinking of "the big sleep" and extrapolating it to all film noir?

reddening, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:57 (ten years ago) link

more just going into a claustrophobic space, a spooky guy at the end of the hallway bolting upon spotting the detectives, and the detectives having to thrash around the claustrophobic setting, hopefully breaking at least one glass object

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:58 (ten years ago) link

almost disappointed there wasn't more of ben folds

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:58 (ten years ago) link

first time i've said that since high school

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

also i don't think this really pulled anything from hannibal other than a heightened stylized air, but everyone should still watch hannibal cuz it's great.

reddening, Saturday, 11 January 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

i think creepy greenhouses/labs are definitely a thing tho the main example i can think of atm is varicella

Mordy , Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:02 (ten years ago) link

both make great lairs, naturally cluttered spaces with sharp corners

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:06 (ten years ago) link

there's the creepyish greenhouseish guy in Twin Peaks too.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:07 (ten years ago) link

re this episode, I thought I was missing a key reference point because I didn't recognise the credits, but I think if not for those I'd just have taken it as a general post-Seven serial killer thing.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:09 (ten years ago) link

i don't think it was just hannibal. but abed's "profiler" was def a hannibal ref. "so many.. profiler shows... on basic.. cable.. so much pain.. ful writing."

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:25 (ten years ago) link

except hannibal isn't on basic cable and is a spin-off of a movie franchise dating back to the 90s

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:29 (ten years ago) link

not saying they aren't aware of hannibal (as per abed's dvr) just that the slow talking profiler wasn't invented in the last three years

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:29 (ten years ago) link

'80 actually, re hannibal

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:30 (ten years ago) link

the music in the DMB reseach scene was taken from a research scene in Seven

oh, and Abed was deleting episodes of "The Bridge" and "Hannibal" show that have detectives with Aspberger's. He was also deleting episodes of "Johnny Spectrum"

or maybe the Hannibal guy doesn't actually have Aspberger's but they say he's "on the spectrum"

haha ok that's great. especially if that's an indication that one of the things they're walking back from season 4 is how Abed had begun to seem less like a functional adult than he had in earlier seasons.

right i wasn't saying the _content_ of the bit was all about hannibal. the delivery and setup was pure will tho.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Saturday, 11 January 2014 17:58 (ten years ago) link

man i hope hannibal is like the platonic ideal of these tropes cuz everything being described as oh so hannibal seems oh so familiar even though i've never seen the show

da croupier, Saturday, 11 January 2014 18:03 (ten years ago) link

I'm on the "what are they parodying?" train, but I totally dug this episode. Love Troy with the blankets and cups, and Starburns' "hee haw!" was A+.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 11 January 2014 18:19 (ten years ago) link

"Wait a minute, ants DO have butts!"

yeah starburns dave hee haw was probably the second biggest laff of the night for me after the dean snapping his fingers trying to get the call traced

oh man, the snapping thing stressed me out.
