I might level up moonstone for the hell of it since I'm going to hopefully have a bunch of her covers after these hulk tourneys

mh, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

Moonstone seems like a dark horse weapon for the bad guy and all women tournaments

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:29 (ten years ago) link

she is my james k. polk

mh, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:32 (ten years ago) link

your Napoleon of the stump

those single player missions where you can fight her at lvl 100 makes me wish you could actually level her up that far

Nhex, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:38 (ten years ago) link

haha no kidding

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 16:02 (ten years ago) link

Has anyone ever beat these levels with the 240 level characters? I Won't even try.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 16:19 (ten years ago) link

My A team got beat by the 120-120-120 team with Ares this morning, not even gonna try anything bigger than that.

Euler, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 16:23 (ten years ago) link

i was able to squeak by that 120/120/120 team twice - i lost at least 4 or 5 times to get luck out those two wins though, and this was maximum "stratagery" w/a lvl 110 Iron Man Model 40, lvl 85 Cap, and *sigh* useless lvl 53 Invisible Woman (required). had to rush to get IM40's recharge while Cap took the hits, hoping he wouldn't die long enough to hit his Blue stun power. At that level, Iron Man's Red Unibeam power does crazy boosted dmg (6000+) for this event

Nhex, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 17:57 (ten years ago) link

I beat the 240/240/240 today! And it forced me to bring Hulk. He was crazy upgraded though and I managed ot get quite lucky. Had my MagNow around 30 or 40, 85 Wolvie and 40ish Hulk (with like 8k HP due to the upgrades). +20% dark avengers, +20% green/black (further boosting hulk's already boosted strengths) and +3 all stock (i think). First play I managed to actually hit a few greens on a lucky combo, and I tihnk one red match, which meant I had 5 red (2 strike tiles per feral). By my third move I think I had 6-8 strike tiles out and I was doing nearly 1000 a hit. Mostly I'd try to hit more greens and blacks due to the damage and due to hulk being a HP soak... occasionally breaking to pop some purples (hitting magnow's superblue attack = crazy damage if the crit tile lands right). It was also the containment breach level which I think I used once.

I don't think Rag or Ares (my 2nd target) even used a special ability. By the time I got to Venom I was more or less 50% hulk, 50% mag, 100% wolvie... venom did crush the first two though, but for most of the match I had 12 strike tiles around 90 dmg per so I was cutting them down.

Would've been far harder with ANY other dark avenger tho I think. Esp Daken. He'd likely crowd me out on strike tiles and slice me to bits.

When I finished the match though... the hunt mission had ENDED. i thought i missed out on my points. But they were counted for the global and I think the level too! Because I hit top 100 hwne i tihkn i was supposed ot hit top 200!

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 17:59 (ten years ago) link

i've beat the 240s a few times but found i don't need them to place where i want, so it tends not to be worth the effort.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:34 (ten years ago) link

it's sick but i kinda did it for the thrill :( this game is a problem

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 05:17 (ten years ago) link

haha, i feel ya. but i'm still impressed you were able to beat it with such a low level team, even with the hulk buff!

Nhex, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 05:37 (ten years ago) link

Gah, I keep getting creamed by 125 rag/dak/moon. Just can't get rag down before he starts hammering me. And too many attack tiles from dak.

Jeff, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 14:15 (ten years ago) link

yeah, that's a mean motherfucker

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 14:34 (ten years ago) link

It sucks because it makes me use punisher, who even buffed is worthless.

Jeff, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link

I love Punisher and think I'm gonna love him more once I get more covers; the black attack is where it's at, I think.

Euler, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:43 (ten years ago) link

I like the character as is, but he needs some buffs. Red ability is great but not good enough to make up for all weak and easily ignored his green/black abilities are. They should be much stronger, especially compared to someone like Doctor Doom whose Black strike tile ability is just sick. My Punisher's at 50-something though.

Nhex, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:48 (ten years ago) link

ah, yeah mine's at level 28, so I'm projecting. also his black attack gets a boost from all the wolvie strike tiles I cast, especially the first area attack...and area attacks are kinda hard to come by in this game

Euler, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:50 (ten years ago) link

I do like Pun's Green attack, but it's random targeting so it's a crapshoot sometimes if that will hurt or help you

Nhex, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:56 (ten years ago) link

ha! Wolverine (Patch) is real; got accidentally leaked last week on the D3P forums, looks like he's the newest reward.

Nhex, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:01 (ten years ago) link

oh shi

SHAUN (DJP), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:09 (ten years ago) link

whoa!

mh, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:17 (ten years ago) link

they should give him a 50+ ability that instantly kills the entire opposing team

SHAUN (DJP), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:18 (ten years ago) link

Black - "Best There Is at What I Do" Interior Monologue slows pace of the match by 1/2 for all characters (allies/enemies) but Patch

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:43 (ten years ago) link

pleeeease add Mr. Fixit now and give a bonus if they're on the same team

mh, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 18:41 (ten years ago) link

Seriously though, they couldn't have gotten a better Patch cover than one that features Hulk more than Wolverine?

Nhex, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 18:58 (ten years ago) link

that cover is rad as hell

mh, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 21:46 (ten years ago) link

I'm pretty much fucked halfway into the Oscorp missions. I wound up getting a bunch of decent 2/3-star people somehow, but no more than 1 power per (except for some people who compete w/ Iron Man for AP) and I can't use green tiles at all.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 16 January 2014 05:12 (ten years ago) link

... and I just now figured out that you can skip opponents who are too hard in the PvP.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 16 January 2014 06:08 (ten years ago) link

The PVP is weird with the scoring. You can go against a high level team for like 15 points, but hit skip about a million times and eventually get to one with 35 points that is considerably lower level.

Jeff, Thursday, 16 January 2014 12:37 (ten years ago) link

always skip everyone that has a lower rating than you

Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 13:13 (ten years ago) link

how did I never notice skip? wtf

mh, Thursday, 16 January 2014 14:52 (ten years ago) link

man, that must've sucked

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:05 (ten years ago) link

always skip everyone that has a lower rating than you

I know that the reasoning behind this is to avoid incentivizing the opponent from retaliating, but man, when everyone else you might face is level 50+ for like 15 points...

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:26 (ten years ago) link

you basically have two choices if you really want to climb the ladder
a) squash ppl so utterly that you know they won't retaliate
b) fight guys high enough so that after you beat them, they won't gain as many points from retaliation as they lost (making it largely a waste of time)

the good thing is if you get retaliated by the player who's high above you, it won't hurt you that much (and they won't gain that much)

Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:36 (ten years ago) link

I've read about that strategy before, but I've been hazy on the specifics of how much higher you want those opponents to be. Also, I assume boosts are indispensable?

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:47 (ten years ago) link

Also I am eternally disappointed in myself for not registering as Sonneywolferine.

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:53 (ten years ago) link

lol, i was SURE i wouldn't play this and so i registered as DURP and now i have to look at that every time

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:00 (ten years ago) link

i don't use boosts unless the characters i'm fighting are at the same level or higher. if they're too much higher, i wouldn't bother at all, like a buffed lvl 60 Ares or something.

what's worked for me - in a "serious" fight where it's possible they can beat you in retaliation, make sure the points difference between you two is greater than what you gain from winning.

making up numbers here, for a general idea.
example: I have 100, opponent has 200. I will gain 25 points by winning, he will probably drop by 20.
Now I'm 125, and he is 180. He can retaliate and gain about 10 points. It's not worth the time/energy to do this when you can fight someone up the ladder.

Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:12 (ten years ago) link

so my question for you nhex is does this work for you? do you get much retaliation? do you get high up the ladder?

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:27 (ten years ago) link

Depends how good my character is that's being featured in the boost. For the Double Shot tourney, I had a rank 90-100 Iron Man Model 40, so I was able to place Top 5, I was even #1 in the last hour but must've gotten squeezed out while I was shielded at the end. For the recent Ares and Hulk tourneys, I don't have great characters, so I'm expecting Top 50 at best, more likely top 100-200.

You can surprise yourself still with how far you get though with proper skipping and fighting. I often roll with 85 Thor, 85 Wolvie + Mandatory Character, I always find opponents that are manageable far into the tourney, even if it's just other Thor/Wolvie teams.

When you want to settle down for the night, put in your BEST team (in my case, IM40, and Wolvie or Thor), so you'll get less retaliations. You'll scare off most contenders. Doing this alone took my nightly counterattacks to <5, probably likely 8-15.

Note that I've completely given up on tanking.

Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:35 (ten years ago) link

lol, i was SURE i wouldn't play this and so i registered as DURP and now i have to look at that every time

DOOOOD wear this with pride, I totally would! xp

Like, I bet you could see that handle for mad $$$.

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:38 (ten years ago) link

i think "derp" is the marketable one

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:56 (ten years ago) link

are you talking about that Slimer clone from X Force?

Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:57 (ten years ago) link

lol

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:58 (ten years ago) link

never thought of doop as a slimer clone, mind blown

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:59 (ten years ago) link

Doop is... oh shit he's Slimer

mh, Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:07 (ten years ago) link

I'm still very pleased that my phone team is named Maggott

I have a mild fantasy about bringing back all of the truly terrible-in-conception-or-execution X-characters (Maggott, Skin, Stacy X, Penance, Slipstream and Graymalkin would be a good starting point)

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:09 (ten years ago) link

btw, there is a sweet spot - maybe ~30 points between you and your opponent? where you can knock yourselves around back and forth, but still both gain points, watch for this edge to disappear. always compared the points you lost in retaliation to how many you would gain.
