ha! Wolverine (Patch) is real; got accidentally leaked last week on the D3P forums, looks like he's the newest reward.

oh shi

whoa!
― mh, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:17 (ten years ago) link
they should give him a 50+ ability that instantly kills the entire opposing team

Black - "Best There Is at What I Do" Interior Monologue slows pace of the match by 1/2 for all characters (allies/enemies) but Patch

pleeeease add Mr. Fixit now and give a bonus if they're on the same team
― mh, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 18:41 (ten years ago) link
Seriously though, they couldn't have gotten a better Patch cover than one that features Hulk more than Wolverine?
― Nhex, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 18:58 (ten years ago) link
that cover is rad as hell
― mh, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 21:46 (ten years ago) link
I'm pretty much fucked halfway into the Oscorp missions. I wound up getting a bunch of decent 2/3-star people somehow, but no more than 1 power per (except for some people who compete w/ Iron Man for AP) and I can't use green tiles at all.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 16 January 2014 05:12 (ten years ago) link
... and I just now figured out that you can skip opponents who are too hard in the PvP.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 16 January 2014 06:08 (ten years ago) link
The PVP is weird with the scoring. You can go against a high level team for like 15 points, but hit skip about a million times and eventually get to one with 35 points that is considerably lower level.
― Jeff, Thursday, 16 January 2014 12:37 (ten years ago) link
always skip everyone that has a lower rating than you
― Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 13:13 (ten years ago) link
how did I never notice skip? wtf
― mh, Thursday, 16 January 2014 14:52 (ten years ago) link
man, that must've sucked
― this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:05 (ten years ago) link
I know that the reasoning behind this is to avoid incentivizing the opponent from retaliating, but man, when everyone else you might face is level 50+ for like 15 points...
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:26 (ten years ago) link
you basically have two choices if you really want to climb the laddera) squash ppl so utterly that you know they won't retaliateb) fight guys high enough so that after you beat them, they won't gain as many points from retaliation as they lost (making it largely a waste of time)
the good thing is if you get retaliated by the player who's high above you, it won't hurt you that much (and they won't gain that much)
― Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:36 (ten years ago) link
I've read about that strategy before, but I've been hazy on the specifics of how much higher you want those opponents to be. Also, I assume boosts are indispensable?
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:47 (ten years ago) link
Also I am eternally disappointed in myself for not registering as Sonneywolferine.
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:53 (ten years ago) link
lol, i was SURE i wouldn't play this and so i registered as DURP and now i have to look at that every time
― this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:00 (ten years ago) link
i don't use boosts unless the characters i'm fighting are at the same level or higher. if they're too much higher, i wouldn't bother at all, like a buffed lvl 60 Ares or something.
what's worked for me - in a "serious" fight where it's possible they can beat you in retaliation, make sure the points difference between you two is greater than what you gain from winning.
making up numbers here, for a general idea.example: I have 100, opponent has 200. I will gain 25 points by winning, he will probably drop by 20.Now I'm 125, and he is 180. He can retaliate and gain about 10 points. It's not worth the time/energy to do this when you can fight someone up the ladder.
― Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:12 (ten years ago) link
so my question for you nhex is does this work for you? do you get much retaliation? do you get high up the ladder?
― this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 January 2014 19:27 (ten years ago) link
Depends how good my character is that's being featured in the boost. For the Double Shot tourney, I had a rank 90-100 Iron Man Model 40, so I was able to place Top 5, I was even #1 in the last hour but must've gotten squeezed out while I was shielded at the end. For the recent Ares and Hulk tourneys, I don't have great characters, so I'm expecting Top 50 at best, more likely top 100-200.
You can surprise yourself still with how far you get though with proper skipping and fighting. I often roll with 85 Thor, 85 Wolvie + Mandatory Character, I always find opponents that are manageable far into the tourney, even if it's just other Thor/Wolvie teams.
When you want to settle down for the night, put in your BEST team (in my case, IM40, and Wolvie or Thor), so you'll get less retaliations. You'll scare off most contenders. Doing this alone took my nightly counterattacks to <5, probably likely 8-15.
Note that I've completely given up on tanking.

I'm still very pleased that my phone team is named Maggott
I have a mild fantasy about bringing back all of the truly terrible-in-conception-or-execution X-characters (Maggott, Skin, Stacy X, Penance, Slipstream and Graymalkin would be a good starting point)
― SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:09 (ten years ago) link
btw, there is a sweet spot - maybe ~30 points between you and your opponent? where you can knock yourselves around back and forth, but still both gain points, watch for this edge to disappear. always compared the points you lost in retaliation to how many you would gain.
― Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:10 (ten years ago) link
oh good god I was just playing my second/third string characters for the heck of it and ended up in a match with classic spidey, with only the passive protection power
basically sitting there pinging at each other until I died
― mh, Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:14 (ten years ago) link
example: I have 100, opponent has 200. I will gain 25 points by winning, he will probably drop by 20.Now I'm 125, and he is 180. He can retaliate and gain about 10 points. It's not worth the time/energy to do this when you can fight someone up the ladder.
Are these numbers that MMR thing I've read about, or vague level average of your highest-leveled characters?
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:15 (ten years ago) link
i think it's the MMR thing, but the number I'm referring to is your "points" ranking for that individual tourney that you gain/lose after fights
― Nhex, Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:16 (ten years ago) link
Ah! Thanks.
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:42 (ten years ago) link
OK, 50 HP from buying ("buying") a new roster spot, with 3 Ares, 2 Moonstones, and 1 Daken (who is not on my roster yet). I assume that Daken is the most dispensable (since I still haven't won his covers from that Prologue mission), so that leaves the debate between Ares and Moonstone. Any ideas?
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Friday, 17 January 2014 17:20 (ten years ago) link
Oh and I drew a yellow Thor last night, so now it's 2/3/2 and maxed to I think 37, which means I could increase C Storm's level as well (for coverage reasons)!
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Friday, 17 January 2014 17:23 (ten years ago) link
I don't know what the take on Ares is yet. I have him l26 with three yellow and three green covers now (his max is l37 now). I've mostly stayed out of the buffed Ares tourney so far, maybe I should give it a try. think it's cool that the current Hunt is a good way to collect a bunch of Ares cover, though the downside will be when my heroic tokens start turning out lots of Ares & my character's already maxxed.
speaking of which: still no daily rewards, more than a week now

ares is a good meatshield (especially when buffed); upper level 40+ players have like 14K hit points and really suck to take down.
― this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Friday, 17 January 2014 17:37 (ten years ago) link
Euler, is the clock on your device set to automatically detect the time? If not, then that might be holding things up.
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Friday, 17 January 2014 17:41 (ten years ago) link
glad to see that others are getting the same thing, hope they resolve it soon
mostly leveling the cap for now; I've really gotten into the blue shield attack against e.g. Daken & Bullseye, and on countdown boards. he's a versatile utility guy who can also tank. I'm pretty much happy with him, Thor, or Model 40 as a tank alongside wolvie and whoever else I'm stuck using
xp yeah my iPhone auto detects time
― Euler, Friday, 17 January 2014 17:48 (ten years ago) link
the realization that Cap can take away strike/shield tiles made him into a mandatory character for the past week for me, esp since he is buffed in The Hunt
― SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 17 January 2014 17:49 (ten years ago) link
timing that current ares thingy so that I end up with three classic Storm covers. I'm leaning on classic Storm as my go-to, might as well buff her
― mh, Friday, 17 January 2014 17:51 (ten years ago) link
she's great but she can't take much damage; but she'll survive a battle or two
― Euler, Friday, 17 January 2014 17:52 (ten years ago) link
This has been a huge reason that I've cottoned to using him now too, in addition to his AP recovery thing.
Do/did people just use those abilities to make 4+ matches to get rid of enemy countdown tiles?
― Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Friday, 17 January 2014 18:04 (ten years ago) link
for the yellow ability, sure, since you get 3
― Nhex, Friday, 17 January 2014 18:47 (ten years ago) link
i may try cap for that reason, specifically to negate the second half of that fucking ares yellow attack
― this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Friday, 17 January 2014 19:07 (ten years ago) link
...so is that a recommendation to buff Ares' Yellow? I'm still not sure which of his powers is worth it, though I like the Red group attack.
― Nhex, Friday, 17 January 2014 19:47 (ten years ago) link
my take is that yellow is the def 5 and the others are more open to playstyle but somebody disabuse me of the notion
― this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Friday, 17 January 2014 19:48 (ten years ago) link
I think you're right. I don't really like the green blowback ability, so I'll probably go 3/5/5 GRY.
