Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry is in progress, just in case there's anyone who hasn't seen it yet: Weary of the waltz and mashed POLLtato schmaltz: The Roxy Music & Bryan Ferry Ballot Poll Thread

responding pretty late, but I am big into a No Wave poll!

Viceroy, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 22:54 (ten years ago) link

Perhaps this has been discussed before, but would be people interested in a DFA poll? If there is interest, I would volunteer for that.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 9 February 2014 01:34 (ten years ago) link

My familiarity nosedives after a certain point, but it'd be fun to catch up on the more recent stuff.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 9 February 2014 01:39 (ten years ago) link

dfa would be dope. isn't no wave just 4 bands tho? and largely one album? never knew there was more to it

flopson, Sunday, 9 February 2014 01:45 (ten years ago) link

i mean i guess whoever those other 10 bands were on the bill the night that brian eno went to that show? but did they ever record and didnt half of them drop off the bill? is anything known about them

flopson, Sunday, 9 February 2014 01:52 (ten years ago) link

I can't lie, I'm getting antsy for the classic rock poll.

WilliamC, Thursday, 13 February 2014 18:55 (ten years ago) link

Anyone know what the parameters of that is going to be? Are 80s power ballads considered classic rock now?

classic rock poll destined for clusterfuck

Are 80s power ballads considered classic rock now?

guh, I hope not.

I think some dude is planning to synthesize a master voting/nominations list from a few sources, but he's the official source for all this, so I'm speaking out of turn.

WilliamC, Thursday, 13 February 2014 19:41 (ten years ago) link

can someone stick me down at the end of the queue for a 60s rock/weird hard n heavy type poll please.)like the 80s & 70s one)
If im still alive when it comes round i'll do it,

۩, Thursday, 13 February 2014 23:50 (ten years ago) link

I'd also like to to Mike Patton at some point, but already down for NIN so maybe I'll wait a few years to volunteer for that one.

If someone else wants to do Mike Patton I wouldn't mind in the slightest BTW.

i'm not gonna overlap with the "favorite albums of all time" poll that just came out of nowhere, so see ya in a few months.

kadeem hardsonned (some dude), Friday, 14 February 2014 00:02 (ten years ago) link

ya honestly fuck that noise

flopson, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:03 (ten years ago) link

that poll wont finish til end of april or something fwiw

۩, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:05 (ten years ago) link

so no reason why classic rock poll cant be done and dusted by then?

۩, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:06 (ten years ago) link

any reason why the other one didn't politely get in line like dozens of others have?

GOOD QUESTION

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:09 (ten years ago) link

yeah that was a little weird now that i think about it
also i always vote for my favorites

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Friday, 14 February 2014 00:10 (ten years ago) link

ppl probably don't need to do much listening for a classic rock poll

mookieproof, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:15 (ten years ago) link

any really!

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Friday, 14 February 2014 00:15 (ten years ago) link

I would like to know why this all time thing gets precedence.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:28 (ten years ago) link

yeah that's bullshit

because it was started impulsively by someone obsessed with polls

flopson, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:34 (ten years ago) link

There is some precedent for bigger genre polls like 50s Tracks and Postwar Jazz Albums doing their thing outside the numbered list without causing too many ripples either way. This all-time thing seems too broad, though, and I'm not getting anywhere near it. What is the value in measuring Tusk against 36 Chambers against Giant Steps? (Underrated Aero is invited to jump in at this point and ask the value of measuring Tusk against Then Play On.)

Ehhh...is there any surprise at all in AG jumping onto the dance floor to show us his moves? Like a "60s rock/weird hard n heavy type poll" -- what does this even mean? 100% guaranteed to have nominations thrown out because they don't fit his definition of...whatever the definition turns out to be. "But enough about me, dahling, let's talk about you. What do you think of me?"

But sure, AG, I'll put you on the list for a "60s rock/weird hard n heavy type poll please," I'm sure it will be FUN.

WilliamC, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:50 (ten years ago) link

lol

flopson, Friday, 14 February 2014 00:52 (ten years ago) link

and george when you read this now you know *why?*

Unless you were in a coma for the 80s and 70s heavy/weird polls, how can you not know what it means? I'd say they were pretty damn inclusive because by definition they embraced the quirky, odd tastes of ILM, and the results were pretty amazing. They were the best polls on this board along with the jazz poll. ILM is in general a fun waste of time, and the artist polls are okay, but if it weren't for those big polls, I probably would have weeded this board out of my semi-daily browses a couple years ago.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 14 February 2014 03:38 (ten years ago) link

big polls: 1
other: 0

Pink Floyd: Rules

I pushrd Herman on the 60s poll in another thread so its p much my fault. Agreed w Fastnbulbous that 80s and 70s rawk poll were huge amounts of fun but I wasnt really thinking how many toes were being kinda stepped on. Sorry about that

Drugs A. Money, Friday, 14 February 2014 04:10 (ten years ago) link

AG's 70s weird melting pot was truly amazing, but yeah, I 'm saddened to see this all time thingy getting ahead. There was a few polls I was looking forward too (classic rock, YLT, Outkast, Eno, Dylan, Sleater-Kinney) and now we will have to wait extra months? Saddened.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 14 February 2014 04:11 (ten years ago) link

now we will have to wait extra months?

Fuck no. This all-time thing is stupid. some dude should go ahead with the classic rock poll because he'd already booked the room.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 February 2014 04:23 (ten years ago) link

the sooner we do klassik rock the sooner FLOYD RULES the polling

tbh i was afraid I was going to miss the klassik rollout so I'm secretly glad it was delayed a bit but god please don't wait on it til mfing april

all I want to know is do I have time to feather my hair y/n

what you guys dont realise is that I found out yesterday Nick had planned the alltime poll with another (ex?)ilxor months ago(its part of a bigger picture apparently) so I had to drop the idea, but then they decided to let me help out with the ilm thing. It was going to happen anyway and William's projections are hilariously WRONG.

And yet when I join the queue for a poll, as you all were bitching about I receive a personal attack by William (not for the 1st time) who likes to make things about me as he cant hide his personal hatred.

There is no reason why some dude cant run his poll. The alltime poll wont even be voting for a month and another month for actual voting as decided by nick.

۩, Friday, 14 February 2014 10:39 (ten years ago) link

Look, we all decided on a community standard a few years back. It works really well. When multiple polls are running, it kinda cluttered up the board and it's difficult for the poll respondents. Not everyone has the time to devote to creating ballots for more than one of these at a time. I mean, a successful poll in everyone's eyes is gonna have more voters, right? We all take a break for the eoy polls and sometimes we shoehorn on special memorial polls when notable musicians die. I put in for the hair metal poll back in 2012 or something? I'm looking forward to running it maybe this fall. Don't really understand why scik mouthy and your poll should be some kinda magnificent exception to this.

how's life, Friday, 14 February 2014 12:57 (ten years ago) link

I think the point is more that everyone is focusing on Herman at the moment when they should also be spending some time yelling at Nick (who seems to have disappeared?)

sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 14 February 2014 14:42 (ten years ago) link

dont yell at nick. Im a big boy I can handle all the bullshit. The point djp is no one should be yelling at anyone.

۩, Friday, 14 February 2014 14:44 (ten years ago) link

and I thought you would know better

۩, Friday, 14 February 2014 14:45 (ten years ago) link

Guys, this thread and the ordering system was started for artist ballot polls. When I was talking about maybe doing a 'best music videos' poll I was *specifically* told that I shouldn't put that on this list, because it was a separate thing. So no, there is no community consensus, and no, these poll-obsessed weirdos don't need your permission to run something that will probably be terrible.

emil.y, Friday, 14 February 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link

which artist is "the 'Classic Rock' canon"?

sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:22 (ten years ago) link

was started for

Reading comprehension, do you have it? People have started fucking around and putting various things in here. But fucking around with what a thing is for is not the same thing as having a community standard in place.

emil.y, Friday, 14 February 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link

re: classic rock, emil.y's point might stand actually - I was the one who threw that one in the lineup here, totally disregarding the 'artist polls' thing. I think it might have just slipped past, or at that time it was so far in the future that nobody would have considered that it might pop up at the same time as a general/decade/genre poll.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 February 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link

which artist is "Producers"? how about "Motown singles", "Stax" and "Disco"?

sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

^ I refer you to the reading comprehension post

I refer you to the fact that the producers poll was suggested and claimed within two days of the beginning of the original thread.

i've got to say, speaking as notorious enemy of pollery and general mean git, that this system that's evolved seems to work really well for the poll fans - i think you probably maximize your contributions by narrowing your focus. and obv i hate "poll poll poll poll poll" all over this place but hey people are still free to express themselves in whatever ways they see fit (however quixotic) and these things live or die by people choosing to play or not

i wd respectfully ask our bird-house dwelling chum not to go nuts with the advertising tho - people who wanna play, will play
